Quote of the Day: Chael Sonnen Says "Anderson Silva Doesn’t Get to Bring Anything to the Fight That I Don't"

"Well [Anderon Silva] he's awesome you know. He deserves to be where he is, I'm not delusional to the fact that he has a lot of tools. He's awkward too, he's got a really awkward body. He's tall. There's not a lot of guys to train with, with his build. Everything he has is very sharp, his arms are so skinny that the bones are on his elbows. His legs are skinny, the bones of his knees and his shin. He can just hurt you a lot of different ways."

"With that said, he's beatable and everybody that's a champion has to get through what I have to get through and that is to beat this guy on the pedestal. Anderson had to do it. When Anderson came in, Rich Franklin was the favorite. The odds makers had him, the fans had him and the promotion had him as the favorite and Anderson had to get over that hump and find a way to win."

"Take St-Pierre who's the best fighter in our sport right now. St-Pierre had to come in behind Matt Hughes who everybody said was unstoppable and he had to find a way to beat him. You know BJ Penn at the same time; all these guys have had to do that. So I'm in those shoes right now."

"Anderson is out there but in truth he's just a guy. You know he doesn’t' get to bring anything to the fight that I don't. He doesn't get to bring a friend with him; he doesn't get to bring a lead pipe with him. He's got a couple of hands and a couple of feet and a bunch of fingers and toes, I got the same thing."

"So when we get in there and we mix it up. I'll certainly have to be ready, but so will he. You know, he can beat me, but I can beat him too. I will not back down from Anderson Silva, I can assure you that much."

Maybe I misunderstand the comment, but I don’t think ‘this guys is on drugs’ when I watch this interview. He’s an intelligent guy who doesn’t say anything outlandish. He’s respectful too, and maybe I’m alone on this but I find him likable. He doesn’t talk smack, tells it like it is, and is sometimes a bit funny.

he HAZ talked smack... BUT

i notice that in this interview, he haz taken it down a notch and this (i believe) iz the real Chael… he seemz smart, down to earth and haz a realistic view on strategiez on fighting Anderson.. I didn’t like him (sonnen)before.. AT ALL… but now i think " maybe he can" .. i mean somone HAZ to eventually….i thought it was gonna Marquardt… but Sonnen surprised the shit outta me…. and YOU. I believe, that with the right gameplan, any fighter can be dismantled….he seemz to be training w/ a pretty legit team… don’t count him out !! that’z all i’m sayin..

OT, but

why do you choose to use a z instead of an s? I could understand if you were shortening a word like drive through to drivethru, but it’s one letter, and they’re right next to each other to boot… it’s not like you would be exerting that much more energy to hit the s button.

by ufc4 on Feb 28, 2010 12:07 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

Agreed

I agree with his logic regarding Silva being beatable. I don’t agree with him achieving that goal. There is truth that Silva hasn’t fought “anyone” except for maybe Hendo. However, that truth won’t be changed by his destroying Chael. Hendo was a MUCH better wrestler than Chael will ever hope to be and has a way more destructive right hand.

I also think Chael is funny when he says “he’s never fought a wrestler like me …” Yes he has. He has fought a better wrestler. Dan Henderson. Remember him from the Olympics and such beatdowns as Michael Bisping, Wanderlei Silva, and Vitor Belfort. Ok, Chael, who have you beat?

I’m not criticizing you guys for not covering GSP, at the same time I do think the Sonnen coverage is getting to be a bit much. If he were actually fighting Silva next I’d be all for it, but he isn’t, and probably won’t be any time soon. If every fighter did this you guys would probably get 10x the amount of traffic, but you’d also get overrun with trolls just coming here to talk shit on those fighters.

I’d like to see that as well. If Georges goes to middleweight, it sounds like he expects to continue to add some muscle, so he wouldn’t be too much smaller than Chael. I think he’d eat Chael’s lunch, but it’d be a great test.

by Scott Haber on Feb 28, 2010 12:37 AM EST up reply actions

Chael is making ME a believer, so you know he has to believe in himself.

We’ve seen from Thales Leites how someone who thinks they have ZERO chance at beating Anderson comes in and fights. With Chael we’ll see how someone who believes they can win fight Anderson.

I gave Chael ZERO chance of beating Marquardt. I’m not counting him out vs Anderson. In reality I think Chael will get blasted on the feet as he’s trying to shoot in, but if Anderson doesn’t land that punch he could very well spend the better part of 5 rounds on his back and lose a decision.

by JimJoe on Feb 27, 2010 11:48 PM EST reply actions

I really don't think Chael has much of a chance of finishing Anderson

and since we’re talking about five rounds here I don’t think it’s going to be sufficient enough to just try to take him down and hope that Anderson can’t get any effective offense going. Whether Chael pulls it off or not, he will get caught with something eventually, most likely during the later rounds after Chael has tired himself out. People are always bringing up Sonnen’s sub par sub defense, but Silva doesn’t usually try to work anything off his back, he just locks in the body triangle and waits for a stand up.

Chael’s gonna need to get this fight to the ground alot and as fast as possible before ANY type of engagement between the two can happen. I honestly don’t think this fight will go well for him at all, if anything Maia serves as a bigger risk for Anderson than any other challengers at the moment with Belfor currently M.I.A at least.

"That's right I'm into hardcore crack, that's why my teeth are so bad"

I think Maia has no shot because unlike Chael he seems to think hes something hes not and tries to stand and fight with his new striking skills which will get him absolutely brutalized.

How did I end up on this bandwagon and why does everything say property of Chael Sonnen?

So did Franklin, Henderson and Marquardt.

Cote really thought he would shock the world.

He doesn’t get any PPV cut, he’s just gotta keep his name out there because he will get a big bonus with a title shot and now there are 2 guys ahead of him on that list (Maia, Belfort). He’s hoping Vitor is a slow healer.

Even if Vitor heals within the next 5-6 months(which he probably will) Sonnen is according to Sonnen next in line after the Maia fight:( imo Vitor has the best shot( a very good one) at beating Silva and its a shame that he seems to be getting bumped back just b/c he hasn’t said anything inflammatory.
