The Thiago Silva render is pretty close to lifelike. Also if you’re a FPS fan, Halo: Reach will pretty much revolutionize the character mapping and just overall environments. It’s getting there. I’d say whatever they do for next Gen, you’ll be seriously close to lifelike.

Just so you can see that they’ve completely revamped. The technology being used now is definitely setting up the next gen already. Blackout would have more info on what is in the pipeline if there is anything.

Still just a brightly-colored Starship Troopers.
And the technology being used has little to do with the writing, story, or gameplay. “Super soldier single-handedly fights alien army.” Not interested anymore. The best thing to come out of the franchise is the Halo: ODST trailer.

HALO = Poor Man's FPS
But staying on topic, it’s really hard to gauge anything from static images and pre rendered footage. It’s fairly simple to make pre rendered stuff look good, another to actually make it look like that during gameplay.
I agree that Halo is a poor FPS but reach has redesigned physics and actual structures. The jury is obviously out until the release though.
But yes, it’s very easy to make pre rendered stuff look good, but the fact that they show more details in the faces and body is a big step in the right direction.
