How is the Etim/Dos Anjos fight on the main card over the Davis/Gustafsson or Johnson/Blackburn fights?
They're really pushing Etim as the next big British star.
Without pain, without sacrifice, we would have nothing.

Correction
Next big star.

Ubernoober- "It like two guy who just stand and swing for fence and try to knock each other shit out it awesome"
There's a reason that's not a desirable designation
Etim is legit, so he’s not just being pushed because he’s British (which is what people infer from such claims).

Desirable or not, it does play a part.
Britain is a market they want to make noise in. Is he getting pushed solely because he’s British? No, but it’s a nice little perk.
Without pain, without sacrifice, we would have nothing.

Because Etim is more exciting to watch than any of those fighters
and he’s also a serious lightweight contender?
he's going to lose to Dos Anjos.
I'm like PacMan fightin you silly kids... throw ya Hatton the ring, and get knocked outlike Ricky did.
lol.
I disagree
Because Dos Anjos has fallen in love with Striking and Etim has better stand-up.

@deowade
Indeed
That line on Alexander is pretty silly— should be a lot tighter.

I agree. Davis’ striking looked horrendous against Stann even though he won. Gustaffson looked pretty sharp against Hamman. I think the line should be pretty tight, perhaps Gustaffson will light him up in the first round
As far as the undercard goes, I am interested in seeing Story vs Osipczak, Davis vs Gustafsson, and Taylor vs Gunderson. I am surprised to see Etim vs Dos Anjos on the main card, but Etim has been slowly working his way up the ranks. Dos Anjos, despite losing to Stephens and Tyson Griffin, is actually pretty good and had an inside leg kick clinic against Rob Emerson, and his ground game is top notch.
Grove immediately jumps out as a good upset pick.
I find it interesting to compare the lines for Penn and Silva on this one to the lines for 101, where they were solid favorites but not as overwhelmingly as they are now.
Without pain, without sacrifice, we would have nothing.

Yeah, I was thinking it’s kind of interesting they chose the name Invincible for a card that has 2 title fights with lines of -600 and -800.

Haha, says a lot about the perceived competitiveness of these title fights.

Main event?
Is BJ or The Spider the main event? Thought BJ was but I see you’ve got Spidy up there first.
Forward Ever, Backward Never...
Co-Main Event would be my guess.
But if this is the bout order, it would be interesting to note that BJ’s fight comes before Anderson’s.
Good to know, however...
I would have still expected them to do the reverse considering the drawing power of the individual champions.
Awesome night of squash matches
I’m so excited!!! I wonder who is going to pull off the huge upset? The old man, the midget, or the one trick pony?!?!?

Despite all the brouhaha over Maia getting a title shot, I’m still jazzed to see the fight. I’m hoping it lasts more than one punch.

Seriously
I think it’s unfortunate that people are making it out to be some bullshit fight when Maia was being touted as the guy to put Silva away before his unfortunate KO loss to Marquardt.

Agreed. What do people want? That Anderson sit out all year to wait for the contenders to sort themselves out? Hendo’s gone and Vitor out so Maia, Marguardt, or Sonnen can all make legitimate claims to being the next in line.
Are those groups the same people, or are the people who touted Maia as being the guy to put Silva away the ones pushing this as being a good fight in spite of Maia being a massive underdog with seemingly no way to win?

You're right
Anderson should retire. GSP should retire. Fedor should retire. BJ should retire. What’s the point?
Blackout612- "Wuts teh UFC?"
Ubernoober- "It like two guy who just stand and swing for fence and try to knock each other shit out it awesome"
Because Maia obviously isn’t going to win and the line reflects it, pointing that out means Anderson should retire? I’m not sure I follow.

...
The names in your argument could be replaced by GSP/BJ/Anderson and virtually all other contenders (with the exception of perhaps Kos/Alves) and it would still hold true for the foreseeable future.
These guys are amazing, their betting lines will always reflect that.
There’s no one Anderson Silva can and would fight that he’d be less than a 4 or 5 to 1 favorite against?
by VirtualBalboa on Feb 26, 2010 2:27 PM EST up reply actions
i'm sure we could all think of one or two exceptions for each of those guys
but unfortunately you can’t just rely on those one or two exceptions to set up fights for these guys… unless you are willing to let the champ be inactive for long periods of time.
you’re complaining about what is simply objective reality. the only way to address your complaint is to scrap the fights and bench the champions.
and that would just be dumb.
Exactly. But there must be some good reason as to why those fights aren’t made and this one is instead of, I dunno, Rashad/Anderson Silva. And it has nothing to do with making competitive and good matchups for the fans.
by VirtualBalboa on Feb 26, 2010 4:56 PM EST up reply actions
Perhaps it’s because Anderson has stated categorically that he won’t fight the current light-heavyweight champion. So having him move off and knock off potential contenders for that title without being willing to fight for it himself would be massively counter-productive.
I suspect that if Machida loses in his next fight or two, we may see Anderson move up.
The light heavyweight division was in that shape when they put together Silva/Forrest. Its not as if Maia is alternately productive in comparison. Its all about money.

LOL, I see. The UFC doesn’t actually have mismatches like other promotions do, its the fans thinking in an unfortunate way.

Impossible to tell if you're being sarcastic
Styles make fights and Maia has the best BJJ for MMA in the world. If you can’t see the value in this fight, you’re just being a fickle MMA fan— but don’t worry, most of them are. This is the best fight for Anderson right now— Maia, Marquardt and Sonnen are an MMA-math love triangle, with Marquardt coming off of a loss to Sonnen, Sonnen unable to compete in time for Abu Dhabi and Maia coming off of an impressive win of his own (and 6-1 in the UFC overall). I find the resistance to this fight truly unusual. I get it that the UFC is held to a higher standard, but let’s not let that ruin great fights because they’re not the greatest fight of all timez.
Blackout612- "Wuts teh UFC?"
Ubernoober- "It like two guy who just stand and swing for fence and try to knock each other shit out it awesome"
Maia has the best jitz in the entire MMA world? Man, what empirical evidence is there that he even has the best jitz at 185 over Jacare (who has him beat in competition 2-1), Giva Santana, or Palhares? Its a guess.
People have resistance to the fight because Maia can’t win. Its that easy. Fights where one guy is obviously going to win are not great. He’s already as much (and in some places, more) of an underdog as Brett Rogers was – was that a great fight? Or did people just have a bad attitude about Strikeforce?
by VirtualBalboa on Feb 26, 2010 2:53 PM EST up reply actions
LOL
Did you just try to make Giva Santana into an elite grappler? That just nullifies all of the other points you’re trying to make.
As I was saying in the other reply, the criteria is guesswork. No one has any clue if Maia is the best darn BJJ guy in all of the world at middleweight. No one. And even if he is, it still doesn’t seem to be getting him any closer to Anderson Silva with bettors.
I looked up Rogers/Fedor: That was +375 Rogers. Maia is already a bigger underdog in most books than that and is still moving to be a bigger one. Facts are facts.

Yeah
I personally determine which fights to be interested in based on Vegas lines. That’s how little knowledge I have of this sport.

I don’t personally decide what fights I’m emotionally invested in based on Vegas lines either. But this one reflects my opinion of the fight, and since betting lines generally reflect the general feeling on a fight, its a good indicator that I’m not alone, nor need to apologize for that “unfortunate” perspective.

Yeah, bang on. Rankings are pretty interchangeable once you get this high up anyway. Sure I’d prefer to see Hendo or Sonnen or Belfort against Silva, but none of those are possible, and this is still a very good fight especially on this short notice. Might be a massacre, might not be. No. 1 HW vs No. 8 HW was one of my picks for Fight of the Year.
Any word on prelims?
I’m guessing no, but I would really love to see Davis/Gustafsson (foremost) and Osipczak/Story.

I had trouble watching Davis’ last fight. His ass is too big, and it’s just like, there, in your face the whole time. His big, taut, ass, in his white, tight, spandex. It was too much for me eyeballs.

No way will there be Spike prelims if the live card starts at 1 PM ET
Although I’d love the idea of getting up on a Saturday morning to watch live fights at 9 AM.
The Seattle Times linked to my website in June 2009. I wasn't aware of this until January 2010.
Etim is going to get knocked out viciously.

Those are the most one-sided betting lines I've ever seen together on the same card.
-500. -550. -600? -800??
I like using semi-colons; they make me feel smart.
On the one hand, I absolutely love this card, because I think BJ Penn and Anderson Silva on the same card is even better than GSP and Lesnar on the same card. But on the other hand it could be a real lopsided night, especially if BJ runs through Edgar the way I expect him to.
Oh well, I guess that means we all get to see more prelims.
Tatum: I think he's a good man. I like him. I got nothing against him, but I'm definitely gonna make orphans of his children.
invincible indeed
Just look at those odds. You never know, but there’s little to suggest this main card is in any way competitive.
Looks like a tough card
To make any money with. Lots of star power though. Should be fun.
" Tell me something Steve, How does a guy from Puerto Rico loose a ball in the Sun? "
Only way to make any decent money here would be a parlay anchored by BJ/Anderson then find one of the dogs you think has a good chance of winning (mine would be Grove) to put with them. Won’t make you rich but might be able to make a few quick bucks.

I use bodog. They pay out hassle free and usually within 3 days.
" Tell me something Steve, How does a guy from Puerto Rico loose a ball in the Sun? "
Pretty much any decent sized card.
If I want to place a bet on an MFC or similar regional show. Especially one I plan on watching on HDnet. I will drop an email to Customer service at Bodog. They will usually post lines on anything if you ask them.
The best way to make money is by learning how to stack 2-3 fights together in a parlay. The lines have gotten a little tighter as bookmakers learn the sport. However you can make a couple of hundred bucks a month fairly easily if you know your MMA.

Exactly my idea
Recently ive been doin mock bets tryin to pick sleper cells and hav been right on every one but i know my luck will run out soon and want to make some real bets. Does bodog have a minimum bet and deposit. Thanks again youve helped a lot/
