Fedor Emelianenko Will Only Fight Alistair Overeem If He Passes Pre-Fight Drug Tests

Photo

From Head Kick Legend (via MixFight.nl):

M-1's Apy Echteld said that they were interested in fighting Overeem, however they would not fight unless Overeem was drug tested leading up to the fight.  In response, Martijn de Jong from Overeem's team expressed his belief that Fedor deserves a shot at this Strikeforce title, and that they look forward to a potential fight.

Alistair Overeem's size has grew massively over the years since his days at light heavyweight, and naturally, it prompted unfounded steroid talk among the fans around the web. It is interesting to note though, that while M-1 seem hesitant here, they were more than willing to face Barnett who already had a documented history with steroids, although that and the cancellation of Affliction 3 could have also played a part in their decision.

According to M-1 officials, Fedor has Werdum up next this May, but a potential title fight against Overeem is still tentatively planned to happen in 2010. So I guess we'll have to wait and see if Mayweather/Pacquiao-like issues arise in trying to set up this match up. In the meantime, what's next for Alistair? Well Head Kick Legend has mentioned rumors of him participating in a K-1 Yokohama event, or in a Strikeforce bout against Brett Rogers.

If Overeem passes the drug test, I think it would say more about our current testing regime than whether or not he’s using.

To be fair, if you cycle correctly you can still be on steroids and pass a scheduled urine test. Much harder to pass a blood test though. You also can test for HGH in a blood test, which currently I don’t think is possible in a urine test. If Overeem were to pass a blood test, I think you’d see a lot less criticism.

I know that,

but I personally couldn’t care less, as long as he passes… If he fails, then he deserves all the shit people can..well, poop, and throw at him.. But as of now, it’s all baseless speculation, just because the guy has huge muscles.

Wait

You’re all for gaming the system if he can get away with it?

by bleve_ on Feb 26, 2010 1:39 PM EST up reply actions

Its not baseless speculation

The guy’s put on huge amounts of “lean muscle” in a relatively short time. No, its not hard to simply gain 30-40lbs in that amount of time. It is however, nearly impossible, to gain that amount of “lean muscle” over that amount of time without. Some of the most genetically gifted professional bodybuilders, who take large amounts of juice, can’t put on that amount of muscle while maintaining bodyfat under 10%… and all they do is lift weights strictly to get bigger.

People can argue about this all day long, if you have any history of being in a weightlifting environment, this is a no brainer… its actually not even worth arguing about because its so obvious. But we can all pretend to be pc and say its all baseless speculation cause the “the guy has huge muscles.”

by bleve_ on Feb 26, 2010 1:45 PM EST up reply actions

What's all this talk that if you don't get caught it's ok?

Also, the fact that he’s gone from 190 to 265 in a few years (and it’s all muscle) is just one piece of evidence. Look at his jaw line! Training doesn’t do that.

i am so sick of people defending this guy, and using ‘oh, Barnett’s still a chunker even with roids.’ Many people who use roids do so in a moderate manner in order to not raise red flags. to me, Allistair clearly doesn’t care and is unabashedly trying to turn himself into a horse/man, like that old spice commercial. This shit is more obvious than Barry Bonds. this is all IMO, I do not claim this as substantiated fact.

that being said, I’m not even that strongly against use of PED’s in pro sports, i think it’s something that will just become regulated over time

I’m not defending anyone, just saying your “common sense” thinking is shit.

by Phildo on Feb 26, 2010 10:39 AM EST up reply actions

i can’t dispute the second sentence of this comment.

however, i didn’t claim it was common sense. i work out with a number of guys who have juiced to get big, as well as many guys who have put on substantial amounts of muscle (30-40 pounds over a a few years) without using (they have generally started out as scrawny bitches, not ripped athletes). i have never seen anyone go through similar changes to Allistair without using a substantial amount of anabolic agents.

to respond to George Lucas’ point, no i don’t have a face-bloatometer statistic or whatever, but Overeem has gotten substantially larger, and the only part of him that has shown any gain in fat or non-muscle mass is his face.

IF the dude ever takes any drug test and passes it, I will change my tune. deep down, i will think he somehow beat the test, but I will recognize that he did test clean if he does

OK back to the subject at hand

I am now pretty sure Overeem will be fighting someone (Brett Rogers?) on the May CBS card as a co-main event with Fedor and Werdum. The evidence:
- Overeem said earlier in the year he would not be available to fight for Strikeforce before May.
- Coker has pledged several times that Overeem will fight for Strikeforce in the first (fiscal?) quarter of 2010.
- Coker has said he really wants to get Overeem on CBS, especially opposite Fedor, to set up a ppv
- Coker is now promising a ppv before the end of the year

Overeem will be fighting in May against Rogers. Book it.

Fuck all of your bold. It’s not the size of the font that matters, it’s what you do with it.

And Overeem-Rogers in May to set up an Overeem-Fedor fight? Problem is that Rogers could (and should) be the favourite in that fight. He wins, he’s got the belt, their only option is Rogers-Fedor II, which is a good fight, but not PPV worthy.

They’d probably give Ubereem Antonio Silva. Uber’d win that.

by TLow on Feb 25, 2010 11:10 PM EST up reply actions

There would be no reason to give Silva a title shot coming off a loss to Werdum. But with Rogers they have an out – he was scheduled to fight Overeem for the title in June but Overeem dropped out. They could just claim they are finally giving Brett his promised title shot.

by John Nash on Feb 25, 2010 11:23 PM EST up reply actions

Is anybody really going to get worked up that Silva didn’t earn a title shot? I mean who actually cares about Strikeforce’s heavyweight belt. They gave Overeem a title shot in his first fight with the org.

I’m guessing no. But I’m sure they’d also like to keep up the appearance of a legitimate title.

by John Nash on Feb 25, 2010 11:30 PM EST up reply actions

I know you’ll remember.

by John Nash on Feb 25, 2010 11:39 PM EST up reply actions

I’d probably be too shocked that there actually is a title fight to care much to be honest. It’s going to be a fighter coming off of a loss if it’s not fedor, no poitn in picking hairs between who is who.

If Werdum is fighting Fedor, almost any breathing hw would be a fine matchup for Overeem, especailly since the odds are that it will be a massive upgrade over his recent mma competition.

by Phildo on Feb 25, 2010 11:59 PM EST up reply actions

man, I thought you guys were all purposefully doing bold. Why the fuck was my above post in bold? I meant for it to be in plain text.

On Silva- yeah, you might be right, but frankly the SF HW belt in itself is essentially meaningless, or has been up until now.

Of course the disaster which could emerge is Antonio Silva somehow winning and becoming SF champ, which would probably be the funniest thing ever. But Bigfoot-Uber would be an entertaining matchup, and given Bigfoot’s tendency to stand and fight, Uber should be able to beat him pretty handily, probably within a round. Silva is a legit HW whom Uber nonetheless matches up very well with stylistically.

But regardless of any questions I have of Overeem’s new found size, i’m not one to accuse people when there is no proof. Fedor really keeps looking worse and worse as long as he let’s these clowns talk for him the last thing he needs is to pull a PBF.

Fedor’s last opponent was tested, too. He kinda sorta failed.

Brett Rogers failed a drug test? Why didnt BE cover that?

Because it would be bad for their anti-UFC/pro everything else agenda.

Oh yeah, that fight happened. /facepalm me

Well, Barnetto failed his test. I meant to point out that I wasn’t sure why Nate mentioned the Barnett situation as thought it were somehow a slight to M-1.

Overeem is fighting at the Yokohama Event..

So don’t expect to see him at Strikeforce at the end of April or the DREAM show at the end of March.

It makes perfect sense to me that Fedor would want Overeem to be tested before a fight. There’s been so much speculation about Overeem being juiced that, whether it’s true or not, Fedor might just want him tested to shut everyone up. OR… maybe he’s hoping Overeem doesn’t test clean, and he can beat him anyway. :)

Anton and other defenders of Alistair,

do any of you guys regularly weightlift? I’ve been doing it for nearly 20 years, and I think he’s definitely on steroids and/or HGH. Of course, I think most professional athletes either currently are or have been at one point anyway.
