Jeff Monson's manager, Alex Davis, explained during the broadcast that Monson was unable to travel to Brazil because he had not given his parole officer sufficient notice of the trip. Monson was reportedly informed that he would be arrested upon his return were he to leave the country.
The sixth iteration of Amaury Bitetti's popular Bitetti Combat promotion takes place this evening in Brasilia, Brazil, and this time the show is available worldwide as an online pay-per-view. The fights get underway around 5 PM ET at bitetticombatppv.com, but if you can't drop $12.95 for the stream, stick with Bloody Elbow for full results as they happen.
The full card for tonight's show is somewhat unclear: both Paulo Filho and Rico Washington were no-shows at last night's weigh-ins, Jeff Monson has been scratched from his bout with Glover Teixeira, and Fabio Maldonado is also out with an injury. Fights which definitely will happen include Danillo Villefort vs. Cassiano Tytschyo, Leandro "Batata" vs. Gustavo "Labareda," and a women's bout between Ediane "India " Gomes and Amanda Nunes.
UPDATE, 4:26 PM: PVT reports that Paulo Filho is out of his fight with Yuki Sasaki, and that Sasaki refused a fight with proposed replacement Daniel Acacio. Thales Leites vs. Rico Washington will now headline the event.
UPDATE, 5:39 PM: The undercard -- streaming for free on Sherdog -- is late in starting; the stream is currently showing an empty arena and fighters inspecting the cage. The English-language commentator has promised to update fans on the Jeff Monson and Paulo Filho situations when the show begins.
UPDATE, 6:44 PM: There's finally an announcer in the cage! Fights are about to begin. No, really.
Thales Leites vs. Rico Washington
Round One: Leites raises his hand and Washington rushes over to touch gloves. They do, and Washington pops Leites with a sneaky jab immediately after, which draws a gasp from the crowd. Leites trips Washington up against the fence and quickly moves to side control. From there, it's no surprise: he sinks in a deep arm-triangle choke and forces the tap.
Thales Leites (16-3) def. Rico Washington (4-5) via submission (arm-triangle choke) R1
Glover Teixeira vs. Joaquim "Mamute" Ferreira
Round One: Glover out-boxing the late replacement Mamute from the onset. They clinch and Ferreira opens up with punches to the head and body while Teixeira continues to hold the Thai plum. Glover slows the pace of the fight against the fence when he denies a Mamute shot, and Mario Yamasaki soon restarts them. Mamute gets stunned by right hand behind the ear and leans awkwardly against the fence. Glover tries to unload, but Ferreira survives and pulls guard. Trying to escape the ground and pound of Teixeira, Mamute rolls out, but Glover retains side control. 10-9 Teixeira.
Round Two: Mamute rushes in for a double-leg, which Teixeira easily stuffs. Ferreira comes back for more, this time clamping on to a single leg and pushing Glover against the cage. Glover snares a guillotine and they tumble to the floor. Teixeira stands back up quickly, but Mamute is slower to his feet. Moments later, Teixeira unloads a combination and Ferreira semi-voluntarily takes a seat on the mat. Mamute's corner throws in the towel, and Yamasaki steps in to call it before the exhausted fighter can take more punishment.
Glover Teixeira (8-2) def. Joaquim "Mamute" Ferreira (8-4) via TKO (corner stoppage) R2
Fabio Maldonado enters the cage to explain that he couldn't fight because of a fractured hand. He says he considered fighting but couldn't risk further damage to his "moneymakers."
Danillo "Indio" Villefort vs. Cassiano Tytschyo
Round One: Mario Yamasaki is our ref. Villefort coming out ahead in early exchanges, with Tytschyo unable to find his range. Danillo slips a punch and connects with a counter right that spins Tytschyo around in his tracks, then sends him crashing to the canvas. Lights out. Tytschyo is down for a minute but leaves the cage under his own power.
Danillo "Indio" Villefort (11-3) def. Cassiano Tytschyo (19-7) via KO (punch) R1
Cristiano Marcello vs. Emiliano "Cobra" Vatt
Round One: Marcello pressing the action early, connecting with leg kicks and punches. When Vatt tries to counter, he swings and misses wildly. Marcello catches a leg kick, goes to the ground with Vatt, sinks in an armbar up against the fence, and it's a wrap.
Cristiano Marcello (9-2) def. Emiliano "Cobra" Vatt (6-3) via submission (armbar) R1
Yuri Villefort vs. Julio Cesar Merenda
Round One: Villefort slips on a kick coming in and Merenda capitalizes, pressing forward and putting Yuri on the ground. Yuri gets his back against the post and works back to his feet, then drops Merenda with a huge shot. Villefort tries to pounce, but Merenda is quick to throw legs up and threaten with an armbar. Unfazed, Villefort presses on and soon jumps into full mount. Now Villefort snakes a leg under Merenda's neck and locks up a nice-looking triangle, but Merenda stands, stacks him up and escapes! Villefort comes out on top and works from the closed guard. Villefort closes out strong with punches from the top. 10-9 Villefort.
Round Two: Villefort takes the center of the cage as Merenda stalks outside. Merenda catches Yuri in the groin with a thigh kick, but Villefort quickly recovers. Merenda jumps on the back of Villefort and tries to sink both hooks in standing, but fails. They tumble and Merenda looks for an armlock. Villefort rolls free and catches Merenda with a sharp right straight. They clinch and exchange sets of hard knees to the face, Villefort landing a little stronger. Clinching against the cage, Merenda with a hard knee to the bread basket. Both men are exhausted. 10-9 Villefort.
Round Three: Merenda catches a left high kick from Yuri, then follows Villefort to the mat. Yuri grabs Merenda's left leg for a heel hook, but Merenda escapes and Villefort takes full mount. Villefort pushing the head of Merenda down and scoring with some shots from mount. Merenda finally works his way to the fence and wall-walks free, but Yuri is soon back in mount. Merenda bucks him out to side control, but it's too late. 10-9 Villefort.
Yuri Villefort (5-0) def. Julio Cesar Merenda (0-2-1) via unanimous decision
Leandro "Batata" Silva vs. Gustavo "Labareda" Sampaio
Round One: Not much going on in the opening minutes of this one, and before anything of note can happen, the ref halts the (in)action to repair one of Sampaio's gloves. Once that's mended, Batata continues to wade in with sloppy combinations, eating sharp counters for his troubles. Sampaio getting busy with his leg kicks in this round, too. Both men stand in center ring, still hesitant to engage. A flashy hook kick from Sampaio just misses and gets whistles from the crowd. 10-9 Sampaio.
Round Two: Batata scores a takedown against the fence and moves into side control, then half guard. He's working for an arm-triangle, but it looks like he's up too high and Sampaio slips his head out. Finally, Batata tries some ground and pound, but gets pushed back to Sampaio's full guard. The action is halted again, and this time there's trouble with Batata's glove. Batata is also issued a yellow card for what the referee called an illegal knee; the replay shows Sampaio was on his feet when the strike connected. After the yellow card, it's (presumably) a 9-9 round.
Round Three: Plowing takedown into the fence from Batata, who moves into side mount on Sampaio's right. He gets shifted back to half-guard, but now the punches are coming down in quicker succession. They move away from the base of the fence and Batata switches sides. Sampaio is covering up and not offering much from beneath. Batata briefly looks for a keylock, but Sampaio fends it off and the two scramble to their feet... before Batata quickly takes Sampaio down again. The fight comes to a merciful end. 10-9 Silva.
Leandro "Batata" Silva (14-6) def. Gustavo "Labareda" Sampaio (0-1) via unanimous decision
Luiz "Buscape" Firmino vs. Francisco "Massaranduba" Drinaldo
Round One: Drinaldo stuffs an early takedown attempt by Buscape and a clinch game ensues along the fence. They work back to the center and disengage. Buscape jabs, switches levels and drags Drinaldo down with a single leg. But look out -- Drinaldo shrimps up and grabs the left leg of Buscape from underneath! He wrenches the leg, Buscape grimaces and has no choice but to submit to the kneebar! Wow. Big, big upset win for Massaranduba.
Francisco "Massaranduba" Drinaldo (4-0) def. Luiz "Buscape" Firmino (13-5) via submission (kneebar) R1
Looks like Buscape's knee is injured as he's helped from the ring after the fight.
Cesar "Mutante" Jesus Ferreira vs. Felipe "Mongo" Arinelli
Round One: Mutante coming forward with hard straight punches before Mongo shoots and slows him down. The crowd boos, as it's nearly two minutes into the match and nobody's died yet. Mongo catches the more aggressive Mutante coming in, and Mutante pulls a tight guard. Mutante throwing up his legs, looking for a triangle or armbar, and now he scrambles to his feet and presses Mongo into the fence. Lots of feints and missed leg kicks now, and the crowd begins to jeer again. The stream breaks up in the final seconds, but it looks like a 10-10 round from here.
Round Two: Standing against the fence, Mutante catches Mongo's neck in a nice guillotine, very tight. Now he switches up his grip and wrestles Mongo to the ground and onto his back. It's a vicious brabo choke, and Mongo's soon asleep.
Cesar "Mutante" (2-1) def. Felipe "Mongo" Arinelli (8-10) via technical submission (Brabo choke) R2
Ediane "India" Gomes vs. Amanda Nunes
Round One: Nunes catches Gomes with an overhand left in the opening salvo, and Gomes pulls guard. The "Lioness" extracts herself and stands over Gomes, slapping away with leg kicks. Now Gomes stands and shoots, but Nunes sprawls ably. They repeat the sequence, and this time Nunes takes the back of her opponent. Scrambling to her feet, Gomes presses Nunes against the fence and eventually wrestles her down. Gomes works from top position in the closed guard of Nunes, then falls back for a heel hook which Nunes escapes easily. Diving past Gomes guard, Nunes tags the ATT product with a solid shot which appears to put her lights out momentarily. Gomes is saved by the bell as Nunes takes her back for the RNC, but looks dazed getting up. 10-9 Nunes.
Round Two: Both women standing and slugging away to open the second frame, Nunes getting the better of the exchange. Gomes gets dropped with a shot and Nunes pounces, trying to take her back. Gomes twists free and Nunes stands up to deliver more kicks to the legs. Side control for Nunes, and now she moves to full mount. Hammerfists from the top. Nunes looking at the referee to stop it, since Gomes isn't offering much in return. Gomes finally taps.
Amanda Nunes (5-1) def. Ediane "India" Gomes (5-1) via TKO (punches) R2

This promotion is a mess.

it was first, bye main, then hello main, now bye again. Paulo Filho is like an ineffective form of birth control.

Yeah this sucks, to me Filho and Monson were probably the most interesting fighters on the card.

No reason given...
Seems like he was never going to fight, but Sasaki wasn’t going to fight anyone except Filho, so they tried to will it into existence.

This is sad
I’d totally make a joke about this, but I honestly feel like Paulo could be dead soon. Something is very wrong with him.

I heard
He broke up with his girlfriend and is an emotional mess. I also heard Monson was arrested in the states. Unfortunately I’m not kidding about either. Trying to verify Monson.
It is not enough to succeed. Others must fail.

Just saw a statement from his manager on a BR msg board – apparently he wasn’t cleared by a judge to leave the country and he would have been arrested upon returning.
by Chris Nelson on Feb 25, 2010 5:57 PM EST up reply actions
Here's the translation as I have it:
“Jeff has a pending legal situation in the US, and in order to leave the country, he must have permission from the judge and [his parole officer]… Jeff got the permission of the judge, but not officer. If he went, he’d be arrested on his return to the country. He fought it, but that’s what happened. He wants this fight, but we have to do in advance. The problem is that Jeff didn’t warn in time.”

Fallback plan in case this show turns shitty, or doesn’t start for another two hours: men’s curling semifinals on CNBC.
Curling is a good choice. But watching Canada’s wimmin beat the U.S’ wimmin in ice hockey is a better one. War Wickenheiser!
The Winter Olympics and "Lock Up" specials

It's popular with Brazilians
And Bitetti is supposed to be one of the better small promotions, like MFC. Unfortunately I think Bitetti was trying to cut Filho a lot of slack here and it just ended up looking bad for him.

I love leglocks, imo i feel the leglocks get ignored too much during training. This leads to a majority of fighters having poor defence to them. I look to the guys from Nippon Top Team (Imanari, Aoki, Kitaoka) Those guys are killer with them and they know lots of figters ignore leg locks and get rewarded for it.
Wow
That was very nice, impressed by Francisco, hope to see him again.
