Dana White talks Takanori Gomi:

"Kenny Florian is one of the top lightweight fighters. If Gomi beats Kenny, that's going to get a lot of attention from many people - including BJ Penn.

"But BJ has a fight with Frankie Edgar in Abu Dhabi on 4/12 and Gomi still needs to fight Kenny. So until that happens we can't make a decision. But I'll tell you, if Gomi beats Kenny, I definitely will consider a match with BJ."

Shit. I’m never gonna look at Florian the same again.

florian is & will always be #2

1 & 2 are going to stay the same for a while. bj will be 1 and florian can’t lose.

  1. can be those boring edgar-sherk & griffin guys.

Haha, if you take Gomi’s hair, and put it on Kenny, the resemblance is uncanny.

Gomi lived that nightmare once.

I'm still relatively new to MMA

but didn’t BJ starch Gomi already, back when he didn’t train?

by mason_beer on Feb 25, 2010 3:59 PM EST reply actions

Yes.

Did BJ win? Yeah, but neither of them were really training and Gomi remains the only guy to take BJ down at LW if I remember correctly.

Without pain, without sacrifice, we would have nothing.

by lowellthehammer on Feb 25, 2010 4:26 PM EST up reply actions

Yes, but that was also before Gomi went on the run that really made him a star. He was actually coming off a Shooto loss at the time.

by JRN on Feb 25, 2010 6:40 PM EST up reply actions

If I remember correctly though it was still a huge matchup. BJ was coming off that disappointing draw with Uno. People still considered it to be the number 1 vs the number 2 lightweight. Did Gomi look better afterward? Yes. Has BJ looked better since? Yes. But it was still a huge match between two top lightweights.

Dan Henderson: “I beat Vitor already.”
Dana White: “You did?”
Henderson: “I beat Belfort like two years ago.”
Fertita: “Oh . . . . uhmm . . . yeah.”

Something tells me that he is not aware that BJ Penn already defeated Gomi a few years back.

He was there. They got him up in the cage after the fight.

If Kenny beats Gomi there fucked. Edgar was kind of a stretch and a rematch with Kenny is too soon. Gomi or bust at this point.

Welterweight

Hopefully it can set up a “cleaned out division” scenario and we can see BJ make a run at GSP again which he has made clear is something he wants to do. BJ v any top WW makes for a great and marketable fight:)

They’re not really fucked, they have a legit contender in Maynard despite the fact that he’s not the best option. You also have George Alphabet who is one more legit win away from a shot.

Whenever things look like they’re over, a legit contender tends to emerge.

by Worldisart on Feb 25, 2010 7:05 PM EST up reply actions

Yep, Maynard makes plenty of sense.

If they are really set on a Gomi/BJ match I don’t know why they didn’t make this fight in the first place. Maynard is stylistically perfect for Gomi to get an impressive win and market a title shot. Maybe they don’t want him fighting BJ again, because why else put him against Kenny?

by John Nash on Feb 25, 2010 5:57 PM EST up reply actions

Maybe they just wanted to make a great fight? Because Florian/Gomi is definitely a great fight.

I have a love/hate relationship with this fight. I love the idea the Florian taking on Gomi, but I hate the idea that Gomi might be derailed from a title shot by Florian (and vice versa).

by John Nash on Feb 25, 2010 7:41 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t know, I hate when contenders are protected and it prevents us from seeing fights like this.

by Worldisart on Feb 25, 2010 8:25 PM EST up reply actions

Well I think Kenny is kind of in a Rich Franklin scenario right now. He’s not going to beat BJ ever. He might win enough to get a second chance but its kind of futile. So now I just want to see him fight the guys I’ve always wanted to see him fight. Guys like Gomi, Sanchez, the Guida fight fit there, Aoki (in my dreams).

poor Kenny,

that pic makes him look like a fat kid trying to hide his moobs….

now, if he could just do Blue Steel a little more convincingly…..

An non-training BJ Penn decisively beat a non-training Gomi 7 years ago. BJ Penn trained by Skynet the Marinovich Brothers would absolutely wreck the Gomi that fought Tony Hervey in October.

True. The Penn that fought Diego would also absolutely wreck the best possible Gomi. This fight isn’t really that interesting to me to be honest.

gomi is not gonna beat kenny

kenny is by far the #2 lightweight fighter in the world the way bj is by far the #1 lightweight fighter in the world

with a different strategy however i could see kenny giving bj a better fight then what he gave him in august

by milk72 on Feb 25, 2010 6:52 PM EST reply actions   1 recs

I hate it that kenny really doesnt gain much from a win. If Gomi wins he likely gets a shot. If Kenny wins people will say Gomi was washed up anyway and kenny will still have to wait in line.

by brooksto on Feb 25, 2010 8:22 PM EST reply actions

Kenny knows how to handle gomi, that’s why he’s called him out. He’s gonna keep being smart about picking his own fights because, if he fails to sell it to fertita, he could end up fighting maynard.

I'm just a dude who's trying to put it together.
