Shane Carwin Clarifies Remarks About Frank Mir

Photo

From the horse's mouth (ie Shane's blog):

It is amazing that the MMA media has to twist what people say instead of just requesting your own interview or writing what was actually said. This is the reason I prefer to give my interviews in writing. I get you have a job to do but don't ask me for interviews and then twist what I said to get visitors to your website. Any MMA media that cut and pasted, read the article, just because one site has a sensation yet wrong title doesn't mean you have to follow. Very misleading journalism.

I have never said Frank Mir was mentally unfit or a terrible human being. What I did say is that if ANY fighter really wishes to kill someone in the Octagon they IN FACT ARE a terrible person. I also stated that I had not heard any of Mir's comments so I was not directing the comment to him. I had been buried in getting my wife through labor and the baby here safely (29 hours of labor).

There are a lot of fighters that say were fighting to the death or I want to kill that guy when we fight. Fighting is an emotional sport and we all say some stupid stuff, fighters just have a tendency to say it when the mic is on, when our emotions are at our highest. Do I think Frank is unfit or a bad guy? I do not, every experience I have had with him has been good and I really do not have much negative to say about him. I expect he will be in amazing shape and seems to be as hungry as we all are to get a crack at Brock's title.

Shane is understandably bridling at the tendency of MMA writers to create a story or a conflict out of nothing and I of course support his desire to be quoted accurately and treated with respect.

He's a great fighter and deserves no less.

At the same time, this is a carnival barker's business and if no one is outside selling the show, no one is inside watching it either.

For our part, we did repost the quote in question, and regret any distortions that might have been created by attempting to edit the post for clarity and frankly I'm flattered that we seem to be the site that Shane reads.

Honestly, I read what he said a few days ago and didn’t think anything of it. I saw you guys post it today and it did come off as a bit like you were trying to sell the hype. Carwin is a well educated and well spoken fighter, Mir just comes off as an idiot, I hate listening to him on WEC b/c he is horrible.

I am truly amazed by this whole story,,,

I read just about everything on this site and when I read Kid Nate`s article (and headline) I found it a really witty way to emphasize that you can say just about anything by warping quotes.

I was gonna credit Kid Nate for his ingenuity but I forgot. And now this? Was Nate actually serious when he posted the Carwin quote??

Really Nate, you should be somewhat ashamed of yourself if that was the case. Shame on you! (mostly cause you destroyed a good piece of satire) Shame on you!

I didn't post the Carwin quote

but I was cool with Anton doing it, but in retrospect i should have been more strict. We are very wary of MMA Bay for a reason. But Cofield and Mania had posted so I was ok with it.
Luke has corrected the staff and set a firm policy about getting confirmation for any MMA Bay sourced story in future.
Anton’s edit to the headline should have been noted, it’s a material difference and a serious one, but not a hard mistake to make and not something he did on purpose.

Because MMA Bay is great for two things: dishonesty and access to Wolfslair.

Yo, Nate...

Dont worry man, Shane Carwin is a Smug, Holyer than though, multi college degree, arrogant, beast of a wrestler…
He is always angry and bitter…I get that from every interview…

He speaks in a condesending fashion about everyone…

If he cant handle the heat, Carwin should stay out the kitchen!!!

Shane always has a smart a$$ comment to say about someone, but his panties get all bunched up when they give it back to him…

Shane is just BITTER because Mir, the Attention Who%e, is looking past him and not even mentioning him.

Shame on Anton then… It should have been obvious that it was, at best, a mis-quote. It wasn`t very a very Carwinesque one.

When a reader sees a quote like that taken out of context…They always find the entire article in which the quote was taken from…

Shane is bitching at the media becaue Mir is giving him No LOVE, NO HATE either!!!

Thanks for owning up to it

I really like BE, and I generally like the rational, reasoned and methodical approach to the postings here. I was really impressed on how this was one of the few blogs that had the patience to not post how Kimo died of a heart attack when the rumours were going around.

I liked that – I’d much rather hear my news a few days late, than have it fast and wrong.

PS. I notice you updated the post you linked to read “[Mir]” instead of “Mir” in the headline quote. Maybe it’s time to update the post with a correction to that?

Completely amiable. It’s actually strange to watch him stomp face in PRIDE after spending any time with him.

A few other names to throw out there: Brandon Vera, Miguel Torres, Wilson Reis, and Dominic Cruz.

There’s a difference between guys who are neutral or nice and guys who are faces. The promotion and the media have to go along with the story. There are tons of guys who aren’t douchebags, but only a few who go out of their way to show respect at every opportunity. I can name a ton of fighters I like who aren’t heels, but how many actually issue apologies and revisit previous interviews to make sure even fairly benign comments aren’t misinterpreated?

by juggmaster on Feb 25, 2010 1:29 PM EST up reply actions

Not really a fair situation, Nelson didn’t then (after winning against Mir) then rub his belly in Mirs face while yelling and pointing at him. Then proceed to flip off everyone and generally have a mental breakdown in the cage.

I think Mir is most pissed off that Lesnar shows absolutely no sign of humility. I’m sure if Carwin can stop Mir and then go off on some similar diatribe (not that Carwin is anywhere near the same sort of crazy person that Lesnar is) that Mir would also hold a similar grudge.

Not for nothing but Bloody Elbow does its fare share of posting miss leading quotes. Some things are posted out of context to sensationalize what was said other times things that are old are posted out of context and can be misleading. Old interviews for example with the head line Anderson silva is not impressed by bj penn or gsp. Thinking it was something new I find out that some of the footage dates back to ufc 94 over a year ago. Dont get me wrong i enjoy the site…but something is to be said for responsible reporting.

I like news aggregation sites. They save me time and I’m busy. But to then turn around and try to call other people on lack of journalistic merit/ethics is kind of hypocritical. Minus the “kind of.”

Integrity? Jesus, can you try a little harder, please?

I never once accused BR of lacking “integrity”, whatever that’s supposed to mean. Since you don’t know what you’re talking about, allow me to fill you in: I attacked BR for sucking (which they generally, but not always do), and more specifically, criticized the UFC for credentialing an outfit that admits to being a farm league for amateurs to get experience. The charge and entire point of my appearance on Breen’s show was to suggest if other orgs want to credential a farm league, well so be it, but the UFC shouldn’t be. Amateurs need a place to get better on the job, but it’s wrong and misguided for the UFC to be credentialing them when they’re in the process. It also neuters the press and lowers the quality of work. Whatever you’re talking about is just fabricated nonsense.

We aren’t free from error. We fucked up here and that’s the fact. I’ve corrected the problem internally and now we move on. Due diligence is part of the culture here, but that doesn’t absolve us from blame or prevent us from mistake. I’ll admit that in the open.

If you come here for whatever purposes you come here for, then so be it, but I’m going to continue to take this job seriously. I take MMA seriously and I take my responsibilities here seriously. I take writing posts seriously and I take doing as good of a job as I can seriously. I’m a serious motherfucker. That’s never going to change and part of the reason why BE is a success.

You’re either part of the new wave or part of the old school, but you can’t have your cake and eat it, too. If news aggregation is the wave of the future, sites like Bleacher Report will continue to be credentialed at events like the UFC because that’s where consumer demand has led us. Consumers are unwilling to pay for quality journalism, and hence get their sub-standard content from amateurs for free.

The comments about BR being credentialed were, as Jordan pointed out, sour grapes. “How come they get in and we don’t?” The truth is, if the best distinction you can come up with between BE and BR is that fanposts here don’t show up on SEs and they do on BR, then that’s really no difference at all. In fact, it just means their SEO is better, and it paid off with better access in this instance.

By all means take it seriously, as we all should in all our endeavors. However, I will continue to think it’s hypocritical when you refer to Bleacher Report as “amateur” and unworthy of credentialing, when we both know full well BE would accept credentials if offered and, in my mind, is no more worthy or warranting of them.

Journalism is alive and well. There’s just a lot more chaff than wheat these days.

Here is another example

Quote of the Day: Even Frankie Edgar Doesn’t Much Like His Chances Against B.J. Penn at UFC 112

Not really the case is it but thats the head line.

Nate says 2 lines further he made up a crazy title on purpose, kind of a bad exemple.

"You hit too hard, too hard, too hard..."

I know I read the article but why post a BS headline?

Because media sources, like polititians and religious leaders, are all car salesmen trying to sell a product any way they can. exagerate or even lie in some cases…..whatever they can too attract attention.

When I first saw the Quote saying Carwin directed his words at Mir, the first thing I thought was, why wouldn’t he sue these people for defamation of character?

If media, polititions, and all “car salesmen” aren’t held accountable for the OBVIOUS misleadings they create, it will never end.

by Din71 on Feb 25, 2010 2:15 PM EST reply actions

What a load of bullshit.

Carwin is angry because he is being “misquoted” when he said "ANY fighter really wishes to kill someone in the Octagon they IN FACT ARE a terrible person. " at a time when Frank Mir is being scrutinized fow wishing death on Lesnar ? I completely dont get it. Why comment such a thing when he knows it is going to be interpreted that way. He wants to be part of of the hype talk but take it back because he doesnt want to call Mir a terrible person? Why is it too harsh and his image would be ruin? Cmon son.

He never said what was quoted, that is why he’s upset. Sure we can discuss the context of a quote, but you shouldnt alter it.

by sadface on Feb 25, 2010 5:03 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Agreed, but if I say all people named Frank are assholes, and somebody writes an article titled “ufc4 says Frank Mir is an asshole” I don’t really have the right to get mad even if I didn’t specifically name Mir do I?

by ufc4 on Feb 25, 2010 6:13 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

It would be a rhetorical leap, for sure. You didn’t specifically say anything about Frank Mir being an asshole.

by smoogy2 on Feb 25, 2010 9:51 PM EST up reply actions

I kind of agree, if he hadn’t heard Mir’s comments yet he probably shouldn’t have said anything at all.
