Shane Carwin: "[Mir] is Either a Terrible Human Being or Mentally Unfit to Fight"

"I can tell you that ANY athlete wishing death upon a competitor is either a terrible human being or mentally unfit to fight. That type of talk and if it ever happened will take this sport backwards. Frank has been a part of the stone ages of MMA and it makes no sense why he would want or make comments that might damage a lot of the good HE has participated in adding to this sport over the years.... Brock is a heel in the ring but at home he is a human, husband, father and friend to many. Wishing death or harm upon him doesn't serve any purpose."

"I will do my best to make Frank's dream of fighting Brock come true, unfortunately for them it will be a three round fight as I plan on winning both of those belts."

What wll be funny is..

If Carwin deviates from the blue print for Carwin to beat Mir the easiest..

Lesnar showed the best way top beat Mir with wrestling.. Carwin is the closest thing in MMA to Lesnar in terms of complete size and strength.. Not quite as agile and probably not as strong, but big enough to formulate the same game plan.. Use the stand up to keep Frank at bay.. If Mir comes in then put him on his back, stay chest on chest (don’t create space) and pound away..

Sorry dude

but Brock didn’t create that, he just replicated the gameplan well against an in- shape Mir.

But the common theme among all of Frank’s (T)KO losses are that he gets absolutely smashed from the half guard. Freeman, Pe De Pano, Vera (after he rocked Mir standing) and Brock all just rocked his shit from the HG.

That’s a really good point.

And I wanted to add, it seems Mir takes big risks by trying too hard for submissions from the bottom leaving him really vulnerable if he doesn’t get the tap.
-Freeman, Mir tries for the heel hook but gets pounded
-Cruz, Mir tries for a kimura and ends up looking like he did after ufc 100
-Kongo, If Kongo was able to get out of the guillotine, Mir would have had a lot of trouble with Kongo’s GnP and Mir even said himself it was a big risk

by MikeD32 on Feb 25, 2010 12:57 AM EST up reply actions

Mir is NOT going to pull a submission off on Carwin, unless Carwin is almost TKOed…

Carwin is a better boxer than Mir, but Carwin is as slow as a 265er should be…

Carwin almost talks as much $hit as Mir, though…He is always saying this and that about Brock…Carwin is JEALOUS of Brock, simply because the only thing that Shane can do better than Brock is instigate…
Brock never talked $hit to ANYONE in prefight hype…
If Kongo would have beat Mir, he would have done worse to him then Brock afterwards.
Brock isnt a heel…Not at all!
Carwin sounds like a GIANt dOUCHE every time he calls Brock the ‘Heel’…

Brock was respectful to Randy, especially with those short elbows at the end…

I am sure that Lesnar talked some prefight hype. Even in the buildup to the Couture fight, Lesnar said that “he will prove that Couture is too damn old to be there.” Whether he has or not doesn’t particularly bug me because prefight trash talk is part of the fight game, and there are some wacky characters out there like Chael Sonnen and Frank Mir.

by chrisbboy82 on Feb 25, 2010 11:48 AM EST up reply actions

I don’t see that strategy working on Mir again, he’ll be more than prepared for anything that Carwin has his best chance is still to land that big punch to win.

by Raker on Feb 24, 2010 11:21 PM EST reply actions

I do not like Mir but i am pulling for him in this fight. Not that i want to see a Mir/Lesnar III but if he has acted this crazy because he lost badly once to Brock. Just imagine what will happen after he gets beat again.

It will be better for everyone if Mir will lose this fight. Maybe this soap will finally end.

by dancingChicken on Feb 25, 2010 4:32 AM EST up reply actions

I’m real interested to see how Carwin handles a fighter of Mir’s caliber. I’m also interested to see him get past the first and see how the ol gas tank holds up. But from what I’ve seen, if he can handle Mir, I believe he has the tools to beat lesnar

by rampage.yo on Feb 25, 2010 12:18 AM EST via mobile reply actions

Seriously. The issue is already out of hand, and headlines like the above only make it worse.

Man, this is so insane, each MMA blog seems to repost the same story, each time removing a bit more context and sensationalizing it a little bit more.

Funny enough, what Carwin said right before this quote was “I did not see the interview so I can’t comment on what [Frank Mir] might have said.”

I actually thought Bloody Elbow was one of the more rational MMA blogs out there. Michael Rome had a reasonable post talking about the context of these quotes: http://www.bloodyelbow.com/2010/2/23/1323505/frank-mir-dana-white-and-the

But then I see crap like this posted on Bloody Elbow with a sensationalist out-of-context “quote” that’s just made up, so I’m disappointed.

by FrancisC on Feb 25, 2010 1:18 AM EST up reply actions

Did you see the link? I didn't remove content nor did I add any.

I straight up copy pasted what the link posted. That’s why I just made it a Fanshot since I didn’t add any input..

I just placed [Mir] so that people would know who was being talked about, which is Frank Mir. I didn’t add any input, I didn’t remove any content either.

And if you think it’s crap. then go somewhere else.

by theredoctober on Feb 25, 2010 4:47 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

So just to be fair, you didn’t transmit an improperly-attributed quote, you merely RE-transmitted it. Except you did choose to add a picture of Mir — who was being ambiguously and obliquely referred to — rather than Carwin — who objectively was the one being quoted.

Is it at least possible that there the post, which does bear your byline after all, exacerbated rather than mitigated the problems of oversimplification and sensationalism?

by madiq on Feb 25, 2010 11:40 AM EST up reply actions

Is this how you react to criticism? “Go away, you don’t deserve us?” That’s very constructive. I’m not saying Bloody Elbow is crap. I think Bloody Elbow is one of the best MMA blogs around. I’m just saying this post is crap. I want to see less of this kind of thing in a blog I read every day.

First of all, you didn’t put in “[Mir]”, you put in “Mir”. This has the effect of passing off the headline as a direct quote, which isn’t even true. Second of all, Carwin didn’t even say this about Mir. He said it about all athletes who wish death upon their competitors.

Even the article you linked to had the sense not to invent a quote like that.

Finally, I don’t even see why you felt the need to post this “quote” this way – it was covered in an update to Michael Rome’s posting earlier, where it was presented with less made-up sensationalism.

by FrancisC on Feb 25, 2010 11:43 AM EST up reply actions

I’m sick of Carwin’s holier than thou bullshit. I would hate him but this bastard throws bombs from hell. Plus he is one of the few people who I can see fulfilling my dreams.
Seeing Mir knocked out and seeing Brock’s huge head and god like mystique destroyed. It would be epic

That another person’s would make such an outrageous comment and will add my own outrageous comment on his comment to make it clear how shocking and outrageous this is!

Carwin is a either a hypocrite or a hypocrite. I’m betting on the former, but the latter could just as easily be true!

Carwin heard some injustice

And rushed to his keyboard to correct it. I kind of wish Mir would talk more about Carwin. These guys are the perfect foil for eachother.

I love Carwin

he’s one of the few “wrestlers” that I’ll actually root for. The guy is pure class and always puts on a good show. It’s nice to see the UFC Heavyweight division becoming stacked once again, Lesnar, Mir, Carwin, JDS, Cain……all capable of holding the belt at this point. Love it!

by ChillMike on Feb 25, 2010 12:44 AM EST reply actions

I just want these guys to act like real people. I hate the Carwin altar boy routine as much as I hate the Mir, Sonnen, Brock, wrestling heel routine. A lot of guys out there get by with just being themselves. Faber, Anderson Silva, Dan Henderson, Forrest Griffin, etc etc. None of their personalities feel forced.

by b2tharad on Feb 25, 2010 8:04 AM EST up reply actions

How do you know, though, what is and is not someone’s real personality? How do you know that Carwin ISN’T actually like that? I’ve met a few people in my time who are literally that moral, and yes, they can be hard to take after a while. And everyone who has ever known Brock Lesnar says that much of his persona is not an act; he nearly sociopathic in his dislike and disregard for much of the rest of society, and it comes across in his speech and actions. Sure, he probably plays it up at times, but at other times he struggles to contain it (post-Mir commentary, blow-up over Canadian medical system, etc. etc.).

Just because someone is unusual doesn’t mean they’re acting. There are weirdos, outliers, exceptions and completely unique individuals galore in society at large and some are going to make it into MMA.

people hate fedor for being like that too… you just cant win with mma fans…

carwin is annoying with his shit…. no one else really bothers me in the sport but that holier than thou matt hughes crap is the worst …

by p123 on Feb 25, 2010 1:21 AM EST reply actions

"you just cant win with mma fans…"

Because you are trying to treat an diverse set of people as a single, predictable stereotype. The diverse interests and likes of MMA fans reflect the diversity of the sport of MMA, and therefore there is no one fighter, personality, method of fighting, etc…that is going to appeal to all MMA fans.

Some will love Fedor’s stoic personality, some will love Mir’s constant babble, some will love Chael’s subtle homophobia, some will love Brock’s outrageous comments post fight. Others won’t.

That is what is both great about the sport of MMA and the art of discussing it.

Off subject, but can someone refresh my memory?

I forget why the fight between Cain and Shane never happended. Also which event were they supposed to fight at? 106?

by Myke25 on Feb 25, 2010 8:49 AM EST reply actions

Then Carwin got surgery done after Lesnar was sick, right? Which is what ultimately led them to doing Cain-Nog.

Shane is trying to be that all American good guy but his quotes come off as trying too hard. He could learn a thing or two from Couture about being the good guy. Or Nog. He comes off like Diego with sound bites.
