Quote of the Day: Even Frankie Edgar Doesn't Much Like His Chances Against B.J. Penn at UFC 112

Ok, so I'm twisting his words a little with another sensationalistic headline, but read this interview from Sherdog and tell me you're betting on Edgar to take this one:
"In my eyes he's one of if not the most skilled fighter in the UFC," Edgar told the Sherdog Radio Network's "Savage Dog Show" recently. "He could do it all. He's probably one of the most well rounded. From standup to the ground, his takedown defense is second to none. His flexibility, balance, all that stuff, he's going to be a tough nut to crack. I'm going to have my hands full for sure."
...
"I think it's just his balance, his athleticism and his flexibility I think those three things make him just a b---- to take down," said Edgar. "A lot of guys try to sit on his leg and it ends up bad for them because they end up eating some heavy shots."

I don't think anyone was betting on Frankie regardless of what he said...

The only question I have about is
How will BJ win this one?
I’m looking for him to add another KO to his highlight reel
If Edgar found a way to win
Where would it rank in terms of UFC upsets? I’m saying it knocks Serra-St. Pierre out of the top spot.
Tatum: I think he's a good man. I like him. I got nothing against him, but I'm definitely gonna make orphans of his children.
I have to agree.
Serra was know to have heavy hands and had the token “puncher’s chance” to win along with his BJJ game. Edgar doesn’t have any of that against Penn.
Let me get this out of the way first. I like Frankie Edgar. He’s a talented fighter and puts on interesting fights. BUT….
Edgar can not knock Penn out and I doubt he will be able to even stun him, he won’t be able to take Penn down, and even if somehow he did he wouldn’t be able to handle Penn’s submissions.

Agree. There may be bigger upsets that I’m overlooking, but in terms of high-profile fights, this would be the biggest ever. I can’t see how Edgar wins.
Tatum: I think he's a good man. I like him. I got nothing against him, but I'm definitely gonna make orphans of his children.
the biggest ever was Sokoudjou over Antonio Rogerio Nogueira
and other than his sequel upset of Ricardo Arona, subsequent developments have shown just how fluky Sokoudjou’s win really was.

It’s gotta be Petruzelli over Slice

That was upsetting for Elite XC and dude in my avatar, but that wasn’t really an upset.

My bad.
I wasn’t sure, sometimes, some really good guys have a really bad day, then shit happens, fedor only fight cans, Frank Mir seriously wants to kill people, Petruzeli / kimbo is an upset. The crazy world we live in…
"You hit too hard, too hard, too hard..."
Haha, the dude in your avatar really had a bad night

I never realized
how much bigger BJ is than Frankie until I saw that pic. Even if the entire fight stays on the feet, Frankie will have to get inside a technical striker with a reach advantage who has a very quick, reactive takedown defense. However, Frankie best PR strategy is to lay low and hope BJs focus is elsewhere, instead of on the fight.
I wouldn’t bet on Edgar, but I don’t see these comments as any indication that Edgar doesn’t like his chances. In other recent comments, he talked about how he’s a much different challenge than BJ’s last opponents, and will approach the fight differently.
Edgar just seems like a class challenger, like Alves and Shogun were, and is giving the champ his due credit (unlike other guys such as Mir and Hardy have done).
A little confidence doesn’t hurt, but just saying that you’re going to win doesn’t make it a reality. (see: Sanchez, Diego) I don’t take much from these comments besides what we already know; Penn is an absolute monster at 155 and Edgar is giving him his deserved respect.
Without pain, without sacrifice, we would have nothing.
by lowellthehammer on Feb 24, 2010 4:40 PM EST reply actions
Seems more like he’s giving him respect. I guess that’s out of the ordinary what with the neck breaking and other crap that is becoming the norm.
Wow. As if the world didn’t have enough BJ Penn nuthuggers – now we have to add Frankie Edgar to the list.
I don't understand nuthugger by definition.
BJ is an incredible fighter with INSANE credentials. So by giving him the respect we deserve we are nuthuggers?
I guess every pitcher in baseball is a Pujols nuthugger because they respect and fear him?
Wow that's journalistic integrity at its finest
I kid I kid. Have any bookmakers put out the odds on this one yet?
Early lines will probably be insane.
Worth putting a little on Edgar, in case BJ trips over The Big Orange Bastard and breaks his leg or something.
Without pain, without sacrifice, we would have nothing.

i doubt we'll get that high
those are mousasi vs gary goodridge numbers i dont think bj will go above the -550 to -600 range
No, I just looked it up, that’s what the first site I went to had.
by ufc4 on Feb 24, 2010 6:04 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
those numbers are ridiculous
but make sense for the fact that diego could literally do nothing against bj
i think edgar has a very slight chance however hes a better lightweight than diego is and a tough fighter weirder shit in sports has happened before than if frankie beats bj
It’s a lot less ridiculous than the odds for his last couple fights. I think he opened against KenFlo at like -180 or something stupid like that. I think the bookmakers are finally starting to figure out that he’s pretty good.

You guys must not get out much…Soko and Seth…
GSP was always very beatable…
BJs fight against GSP was VERY Impressive…
To compare….Do you see GSP lasting 4 rounds with Anderson Silva..hahah…I would be impressed if GSP lasted 4 seconds with Anderson….
BJ is one of the most underrated MMA fighters…
Frankie can easily make 145…but WHY when he is top 5 in the UFC/world….
Also, if you think that there are any fighters outside the UFC that are top 5 at 155…put down the pipe and watch some video…
“GSP was always very beatable…”
Perhaps the single dumbest comment in BE history.
by ufc4 on Feb 24, 2010 5:46 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
And the Seth thing was a joke, try to keep up.
by ufc4 on Feb 24, 2010 5:47 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
BJ getting smashed to Bolivion for 4 rounds was anything but impressive. Strange that you use that fight to show how GSP is very beatable.
Penn is the #1 ranked LW, and Top 4 P4P. He’s anything but underrated. He’s not rated at WW because he doesn’t have any wins there in recent memory.
you have a short memory!
Current ufc w.w. champ:gsp, before that Hughes, before that Bj. Bj fans remember. Plus I feel he won the first gsp fight, lost the decision, but won the fight. So did Dana or else he wouldn’t have gave him the shot @ hughes when gsp got hurt. IMHO
by Raycetpfl on Feb 24, 2010 6:05 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
or maybe
There wasn’t any other legitiamte welterweights to contend for the title? The fight between Penn and GSP was for a title shot so why wouldn’t the number 2 contender take the number one’s place? And did Penn win? Absolutley not, he got roughed up and controlled by the much more powerful Hughes.
It was a similar situation to Machdia/Shogun except we were pleasently suprised by the way that fight turneds out ;)
What exactly is short about my memory? I distinctly recall BJ also getting smashed by Hughes and TKOed in the fall of 2006. I recall BJ losing to GSP in their first fight in the spring of 2006. Again, you bringing up more Penn losses does nothing for your contention that he is underrated. Interesting logic, however.
Matt Serra doesnt, or Matt Hughes and bj total is with the matts on this one.
by Raycetpfl on Feb 24, 2010 6:08 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
Did you watch their second fight? Any of the second fights between GSP and the three fighters you just mentioned? How about the third with Matt Hughes.
Why don’t you do that and then talk with the grown ups.
by Steven T. Kelliher on Feb 24, 2010 6:10 PM EST up reply actions
I saw all of them. I just don’t think he is unbeatable. You know cause……. I have seen him lose. Plus the whole grease thing in the Penn fight. He is no Anderson, or Bj for that matter. I am still a big gsp fan. I would like to see more stoppages out of him. I think his new bulk will do the trick.

“Spectaa” didn’t, there is a difference between “very beatable” and “beatable”.
If there isn’t, then please accept my sincere apologies.

Look….GSP is the man at 170
BJ is the man at 155
Anderson is the man at 185
Brock is the man at HW
SlowGun is currently the man at 205, but there are a lot of MEN at 205…Its like a dysfunctional/unstable family
Point being…I believe that Anderson is THE man, and then BJ is in a second, then Brock, then GSP…I dont care to much for Slogun Rua.
In there respective weight classes, I rank P4P in how well they do in their weight class combined with how well they do with the weight class above them…
How can anyone ‘without a Canadian accent’ consider a higher rank than BJ in P4P rankings…MMA fans have NO conception of what P4P means!!!
GSP>BJ so GSP is ranked higher in P4P??
Put Brock Lesnar against GSP…does that make Lesnar better P4P if he wins convincingly?? Hell No!! GSP is not even close to BJ with P4P rankings…
Fitch did get Beat the F…UP by GSP, but he did stun him a few times…GSP CANNOT handle Hardys power if he connects…
Anderson Silva Brock and BJ lost fights too, that doesn’t make them VERY BEATABLE.
Am I wrong?
"You hit too hard, too hard, too hard..."
Brick only has 5 fights easy on the invincible Brock thing. I do like gsp. He just hasnt reached Jedi status yet IMHO. Anderson & Bj are on some next level shit. I would say they are less likely to be beat then gsp.
by Raycetpfl on Feb 24, 2010 6:43 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
Just so you know, BJ Penn has 4 fewer wins and 3 more losses than GSP. Anderson Silva has 2 more losses.
Penn has one loss at LW, his natural weight class, early in his career. GSP has two at WW, his natural weight class, one fairly recently to a guy that by all accounts he should have beat.
So not exactly an even comparison.
Without pain, without sacrifice, we would have nothing.
by lowellthehammer on Feb 24, 2010 6:54 PM EST up reply actions
Oh, OK, I didn’t realize that all those other losses didn’t count. So I guess his win against Hughes doesn’t count either?
Didn’t say they didn’t count, I said it wasn’t an even comparison. To me the dominance a guy displays in his own weight class is a bit more relevant than how he does when he stops watching his diet to fight guys that have significant height/weight on him. In his weight class, Penn has lost one fight. GSP has lost two.
Without pain, without sacrifice, we would have nothing.
by lowellthehammer on Feb 24, 2010 7:12 PM EST up reply actions
In that case BJ (by my count) only has 11 wins at LW, GSP has 19 at WW. Sounds just as dominant if not more so to me.
jeremy horn has 80+ wins
Sounds pretty dominant to me.
Wow, so completely relevant to the discussion at hand. Thank you for your contribution, I guess that settles everything.
by ufc4 on Feb 24, 2010 10:06 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
then you got the point...
your point was irrelevant. You can’t compare fighters purely by how many wins they have, but by who they fought and how they won or lost. I know you were trying to make a point, but your rebuttal was just as myopic as the post you were replying to.
Bj has only lost to champions, no shame in that. all of which naturally out weigh him except one.Pulver Hughes machida and gsp are all great fighters.
Anderson hasn’t lost a fight after receiving his bjj blackbelt. Since. we are throwing trivia around.
I really wanna see gsp Penn 3. I think it will be great!!! with BJ’s new found cardio and gsp not being slippery I like his chances.
by Raycetpfl on Feb 24, 2010 7:06 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
True, I just think Penn is better. In fact I don’t know how he makes weight with me clinging so tightly to his nut sack. Lol
by Raycetpfl on Feb 24, 2010 7:25 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
Except Serra wasn’t a champ until after he beat gsp and Bj had already beat Serra at lw
by Raycetpfl on Feb 24, 2010 7:31 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
Granted, but Machida also wasn’t a champ when he beat BJ. Obviously BJ and GSP are both great, I just think it’s ridiculous to say BJ is so much better when his record is so much worse and he has lost to GSP twice. And for the record I’m not trying to discredit BJ at all, this all started from a comment that said BJ is underrated and GSP is very beatable.
I see what your sayin But bj totally got robbed in their first fight. In my mind they are 1-1. I really do look forward to a third fight. With bjs new conditioning and gsp added size it should be epic.
by Raycetpfl on Feb 24, 2010 8:16 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
How did he get robbed? The fight was close and BJ had terrible cardio and couldn’t do anything towards the end. BJ took round 1, GSP took round 3, round 2 was very close. Some people see it one way, some see it another way, but to say he got robbed is just wrong.
by ufc4 on Feb 24, 2010 8:49 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
wait are u really saying that petruzelli was one of the biggest upsets in mma????
petruzelli was on TUF went the distance with matt hammill in a fight of the night and went into the kimbo fight with a 9-4 record, hes a good if unspectacular fighter while kimbo got famous for beating random ppl up at bbqs if anything seth should have been favored in the fight
Hey guys, first off I wanna say that this is my first post…so take it easy on me for a week. Feel free to shred me to pieces after that haha. I’ve been coming here for years about 5 times a day, just never signed up. Decided it was about time. I love reading the articles. I think the writers are great as well as all the members input. Having said that, I’m really hoping Edgar can pull off the win. His modesty almost makes me think he will do it…….almost.
"Dave's a killer!!!" ..... "Dave's a mess.."

Kind of twisted?
Insinuate whatever you like in the body of your commentary, but I do think the title is kind of ridiculous. Although you did own up to it with your introductory sentence, so I guess that’s cool haha.
