REVISED Best and Worst Chins in MMA
I figured after all the comments I received on my last post, "The Best and Worst Chins in MMA," I would do a revision post, including some of the fighters I had either forgotten or not properly mentioned in the aforementioned post. Good or bad, I definitely appreciate all the post in response. Just a few things to point out, 1) It was late and I was interested but forgot a few important names, so shoot me. 2) A good chin is not based on your ability to avoid damage, it's your ability to take damage and not go down, so don't tell me Anderson has a great chin. He may very well but we haven't seen him hit with enough good shots to see if he can take a good, solid punch. Same with Lyoto Machida. 3) I am a hardcore MMA fan but I have not seen every MMA match that took place so if I do not have a fighter you were thinking of, get over it. This is my opinion and to each his own. 4) I get the feeling some people think I am trying to disrespect certain fighters which is not the case. I have the utmost respect for any fighter that steps into the cage, and in fact, Andrei Arlovski who is one of my favorite fighters is ranked number one on my worst chins list. The simple fact is, if you can't take a punch, you can't take a punch.
Best Chins
1. Cabbage Correira
2. Fujita
3. BJ Penn
4.Dan Henderson
5. Rampage Jackson
6.Mark Hunt
7.Minotauro Nogueira
8.Patrick Cote
9. Tito Ortiz
10. Chris Lytle
Worst Chins
1. Andrei Arlovski
2. Keith Jardine
3. Jonathan Goulet
4. Evan Tanner
5. Renato Babalu Sobral
6. Mirko Cro Cop
7. Frank Trigg
8. Ricardo Arona
9. Tank Abbott
10. Matt Lindland

I’d have to argue with worst chins. Jorge Santiago got staggered from a punch from the bottom against Khalidov. Cro Cop was taking a lot of damage from Dos Santos, and wasn’t even knocked down, and seeing Cro Cop’s record, he hasn’t been KOed or TKOed very much. I wouldn’t put Babalu so high up there either in that the guys he has fought that KOed or TKOed him are guys with that type of power.
I agree that Santiago should be in the top ten for worst chins. The guy got rocked bad from the bottom against Khalidov, that was a first for me I have never seen a guy get rocked from the bottom like that so his chin definately has to be questioned.
I would say
Santiago hands down should be Top 5. It’s not as bad as Goulet’s but still he’s definitely a fight that is hurt by his chin more then anything else.

you're right but...
Fedor could KO anyone, given. Still, he was knocked out cold in one of his first MMA matches against some nobody, knocked out cold against either Ricco Rodriguez or Pedro Rizzo, (cant remember which,) knocked out by Tim Silvia, knocked out by fedor, knocked out by Brett Rogers. I respect the man as a fighter but damn, he seems to have a glass chin.

and on the Brett Rogers fight,
he did take several huge shots before going down..I think the problem (at least for that fight) was his defense, and that he just moved straight back, so he got clocked several times… It wasn’t like a one punch KO like the one against Fedor.

I would still say that AA
needs to be on the top 10. He’s still a great fighter but with a better chin his wild/defensive-free at times style would be dangerous. Unfortunately his chin probably suits him better as a grappler and someone to slow down the pace.

I would have to take Cabbage out of top spot for sure, 4-5 years ago yes but as he has gotten older .his chin is not as good just the same as I think Nog’s Chin isn’t the same as it used to be. I would honestly rate Cotes chin at the top thats just my opinion because he has fought some strikers with KO power in his hands and just never gets hurt. If his boxing and sub defense be as good as his chin he would be an amazing fighter.
I really don't get claiming Crocop has a bad chin
A ton of people are doing this lately to a guy who’s been KO’d 4 times (2 of those being to body or leg shots from Ernesto Hoost) in a career spanning 14 years and 2 sports. I mean sure, the Gonzaga knockout was fucking nasty, but how many people do you think wouldn’t be KO’d by that kick?

Missing
Cain Velasquez. Dude has a fine chin and looks like an even better one then Nog’s. He can take a punch (Kongo’s) and still have the ability to shoot double legs with great technique. I don’t like him that much but the guy can doesn’t looked dazed when he gets hit in the chin.

Cain’s chin isn’t better than a prime Nog’s chin. Nog of today is at the twilight of his career, and his chin has taken a ton of shots. But in his prime, he took shots like Kongo dropped Cain with, and shook them off.

Why is Evan Tanner on the worst chins list?
He was only KOd twice in his extensive career…once by a vicious slam from Tito, and the other by a huge knee from Okami that would have KOd anyone. He has a few other TKO losses on his record, but those had nothing to do with a weak chin.
The dude took a lot of punishment in his fights. If anything, I’d put him on the best chins list.

Worst Chins is still garbage
1. AA got KO’d by FEDOR and Brett Rogers, and both of those were due to bad technique.
2. Jardine has only been KO’d by dudes with savage power. His awkward stance.
3. Goulet? I won’t argue with that. Dude gets KO’d when he turns on the shower.
4. Tanner…..Seriously why is he on here?
5. Babalu has only been KO’d by Liddell and Mousasi. GTFOH.
6. Cro Cop Randleman and Sasquatch. Your point is invalid.
7. Frank Trigg? I won’t argue. He’s shot.
8. Ricardo Arona….Flying Stomp and Rampage hit him with one of MMA’s illest slams to date.
9. Tank Abbott has no technique whatsoever. That’s why he’s getting KO’d
10. Matt Lindland……..I don’t think you know much about MMA, son.

P.S.I wrote this article with intellect but I didnt’t write is with pinpoint precision. It was late and it was my personal opinion. If an opponent has been knocked the fuck out and ive seen it, sorry. Sorry if I havent seen your worst chins list. Please enlighten me so i can learn from you
by dreamers_12345 on Feb 23, 2010 3:03 PM EST up reply actions
If someone gets KO’d twice in 15 fights, they don’t have a bad chin. Now if they are 15 -11 and 8 of their losses are KO’s in the 1st round, then yea they might have a bad chin. And you made two of these so I’m not buying the “it was late” excuse.

@deowade
I don’t know how to say it without being offensive, but your worst chins list is probably the most incorrect, pointless thing i’ve ever seen on bloodyelbow.
A ton of them fighters have only ever been KO’d twice, how does a fighter thats been KO’d twice over a lengthy career even come into consideration for “Worst Chin”?
I agree with Jardine, Goulet, and possibly Trigg, although I think it’s very debatable looking over his whole career. The rest shouldn’t even be bought up in discussion about the matter, let alone put on this list.
Evan Tanner? He took a big slam and a knee from hell. Matt Lindland? You mean you saw Affliction and presumed, the guy is tough as nails, he could probably KO any of us using his chin!
Please don’t revise this again, it’s time to give up.

I’m sorry, I didn’t know you were an MMA connoisseir ( Im sure I spelled it wrong) but god forbod i have an opinion. Matt Lindland? Got knocked out cold in the UFC twice, knocked out in Affliction by Viotr. Yeah, maybe im jumping to conclusions but he by o means has the best chin in MMA. Get over it.
by dreamers_12345 on Feb 23, 2010 2:59 PM EST up reply actions
Like I said, there was no way I could put into words what I wanted to say without it being insulting, so I didn’t try.
A Connoisseur? the word connoisseur means to have a great knowledge of said subject, and unsurprisingly, a high percentage of people who use bloody elbow have a great knowledge of MMA. I’ll fully admit to not partaking in the sport or knowing what it’s like to be in the ring, but yes, from a spectators stand point and following careers of fights, I would say I, and 90% of the bloody elbow readership are MMA connoisseurs.
The difference is I haven’t chosen to express my opinion on this matter in not one, but now two fan posts. I haven’t expressed my opinion once, then got a lot of bad feedback, so decided to change my list due to other peoples opinions, re-done said list, then still not been able to accept criticism of the list.
Did I say at any point Matt Lindland has the best chin in MMA? No, but Matt Lindland does have a 28 fight, 12 year career, and his background is wrestling, a sport that has no striking, maybe it’s just me and others don’t share my opinion, but to me, a wrestler that comes into MMA and doesn’t get KO’d but every striker who lands a punch on them is a amazing achievement.
Compare Lindland’s career to Kimbo Slice. Kimbo has 5 professional fights, I think we will all agree they were at the time against nobodies or cans (apart from maybe Houston, but that’s debatable), in one of them fights he got KO’d, and hard. Too me a 5 fight 1 KO record is worse than 28 fights 3 KO’s (one of which was via a slam, nothing to do with his chin), and the first one is much worse, so shouldn’t Kimbo be on this list? This is how I would come up with my “Worst Chins” list anyway, it has to be ratio between fights to KO’s.
I’m still trying to grasp where your coming from with this, if it was “worst chins of 2009” I could understand AA, Lindland, Babalu etc, but then you include guys like Tanner and Abott, so it’s not that. This is the problem people are having I think, the list is so mish-mash that it doesn’t make any sense.
I’m not against your personally, really, I like your “best chins” list, but your “worst chins” list simply doesn’t contain fighters with the worst chins in MMA.

Houston Alexander should be on the “Glass Jaw” list. Near the top.

Obviously people who are strikers get knocked out more. That is not a good way to determine if a striker has a good chin or not. A grappler who never engages or only engages for a little shouldn’t be considered in the same light.
Worst chins is impossible. You would have to look up on fight finder some terrible fighters. Cro Cop? Lindland? And Jardine is easy but who has knocked him out that wasn’t a KO ARTIST? Jardine is a striker .. Remember what I said…
Listen scrap worst chins for now. You will never win do you see every1 yelling at u?> Scrap it. Best chin in a great topic.
Best CHins
Hendo does not have a better chin than Rampage. Hunt Cabbage and Fujita sounds like a great top 3.
Rampage has one of the best chins ever. Hendo is a grappler. Hendo’s chin is ridicolous. Where does it make you thjink Hendo’s is better though? Name 1 fighter besides the top 3 that could take all 20 of Wandy’s knees?
You can’t have Cote in there if Leben’s not. Leben has a better chin than Cote.
Cabbage, Hunt, Fujita, BJ,Rampage, Hendo , Leben , Big Nog(prime), Tito , Cote
That looks better. Bj has pretty much never even been rocked. That is amazing especialy while fighting in a division too big for you overweight and out of shape for many of them.. That is crazyness.
What about Anderson Silva? He doesn’t get hit much but when he does it doesn’t seem to phase him. I’ve never even seen him staggered.
Also Fedor has to be on this list.
It's hard to say...
I feel like I’m sure he has a good chin yet he gets hit so little making it on this list is impossible for Silva. A lot of the guys with legendary chins unfortunately have awful defense and eventually end up having poor chins later in their career.

There is a fight in Cage Rage where he lets a guy hit him a decent amount (for no reason) without even flinching, then lights him up after.
I don’t think he is in the class of Rampage, but he would probably be near to a vintage Leben.
And the point about guys with great chins losing them is appropriate – no more do you see Wand/Liddell walking through power punches to land their own more powerful punches. Anderson will see a slower decline since he is upper tier with his chin, striking technique, frame, explosiveness/strength (as he ages), and a speed advantage over most he fights.
How is Fedor not on the list? The guy has over 30 professional MMA fights and has only been rocked once and I’ll add didn’t even fall down, and then proceeded to demolish said opponent.
Yeah and Mark Hunt needs to be higher solely based on this……

That’s insane. I totally don’t remember ever seeing that. That’s sick. That right there is the best chin I’ve ever seen .
by The Darkness on Feb 24, 2010 7:44 PM EST up reply actions
wow never saw that b4
i cant believe he survived a prime lhk thats unbelievable
Yea that is just amazing. Hunt may be #1 but I dunno Cabbage man is crazy.
Cabbage, Hunt , Fujita however I would like more Fujita clips for proof.
Anderson and Fedor def deserve respect. They both have good chins but also great defense. Anderson hardly gets hit slips many punches and Fedor is the 2nd least hit fighter in history !!!!!!!! ( behind machida maybe first after shogun fight though)
Neither have taken the damage these top ten guys have and survived because they are too good. All of the guys in the top 10 have such a great chin very very good chins would not fit on a top 10.
No way..
Cro Cop shouldn’t even be on this list much less 6th, where is James Thompson?lol he should be #1

Ugh...
Again. Kendall Grove under worst, Shogun under best. C’mon guys…

Agree w/ Cabbage having the best chin... ALTHOUGH..
let’z not forget that Tank ko’d Cabbage…. WTF iz Evan Tanner doing on the worst list?
