CSAC Official Says Strikeforce Is Looking at April 24th in California
From Josh Gross's twitter feed:
Strikeforce is considering Calif. for April 24 card, according to CSAC's George Dodd -- possibly the only exec. officer w/cauliflower ear
Please note that Gross is getting his information from the CSAC and NOT from Strikeforce. What has happened to their media relations?

I’m sure they’d be glad to f*ck up two shows on the same night. Hell it’d probably be their crowning achievement.
Without pain, without sacrifice, we would have nothing.

More news out of CSAC ...
Josh Barnett just missed his steroid hearing AGAIN.
That makes four times now he hasn’t showed up.
Shrug..
And people get mad at me for saying he doesn’t deserve another chance.

he doesn’t deserve another chance
Why would you say something like that? You don’t believe in second chances? America is the land of second chances.
Why do you hate America?

Second chances? Maybe
But we’re clearly not talking about second chances.

I suppose, it’s not like he’s a drunk driver or anything.

Well...
Like a drunk driver, he’s on his third strike. String those close together and bad things happen.

I think this shit is tired. It’s like telling guys “you can fuck up two times, then you’re really in trouble”. It’s pretty silly.

You're looking at it wrong
I’m sure a lot of fighters use PED, but only Josh is honest enough to fuckup all the time so we know for sure he’s using. That’s consideration.

Are you considering the Affliction pop strike two? I think the gravity of the situation is like he tomahawked the ref like Delmon after strike two.

He probably considers Hoffman number 1, Couture number 2, and Affliction number 3. Just guessing.

I don’t really think it’s expected for the WEC to be telling the media every location that they inquire about running in. This one doesn’t make much sense to be upset with them over.

I wonder if this is related? Could Strikeforce have been holding out hoping that Barnett would have been cleared so they could have switched Werdum out for a more marketable Josh?
i would hope that if they were planning that they would have reminded him of the part of the appeal process that said he had to be there.
Josh sent a rep should he could wrestle Sapp in Japan.
The man has his priorities straight.

There have been rumors of a second Strikeforce card for April, with Tim Kennedy vs Joey Villasenor and Vitor Ribeiro vs TBA on the card. This could still be that card, although I don’t see how Showtime puts it on since they have the Super Six tourney that night and they aren’t going to want a CBS show competing with their own event.

Wow
Sounds like a great card

Fedor or not...
I’ll be watching WEC on the 24th

I will be watching the free card for sure.
No way in hell am, i buying a wec card even if they r on different nights.
Because i already have plans on buying the ufc card that month,
I cannot afford another ppv . The Ufc ppv is much more stacked in my opinion. Besides it just dosent seem right to order wec on ppv yet.
All this WEC talk has resparked my rage......
Hopefully Strikeforce does happen this night, it would make the WECs PPV numbers even lower, as they should be. Don’t get me wrong, I love the fighters in the WEC, but the high level 135 and 145 guys deserve the exposure and money brought on by being a “UFC Fighter.” I’m hoping for the WEC’s failure in hopes those stars that deserve it will get their shot in the UFC.
You just got me thinking: what if Strikeforce is planning on an April 24th ppv event? Think of it:
- they can’t be on Showtime because of the Super 6
- The UFC can’t counter-program because of the WEC ppv
- The WEC will not take much of a dent out of the ppv market
- They can promote the shit out of it the week before with the CBS card.
- Fedor and M-1 have certain expectations. They might be too expensive for CBS.
I don’t think it is what they’re planning, but I wouldn’t be floored if they made that announcement.
There are some good points there
"Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy" - Ben Franklin
They are not doing a PPV on the 24th.
Blackout612- "Wuts teh UFC?"

I doubt it as well, but I make a fairly strong circumstantial case don’t I? That’s all that matters when commenting on a blog.
No
They have near zero brand recognition.
Blackout612- "Wuts teh UFC?"
Ubernoober- "It like two guy who just stand and swing for fence and try to knock each other shit out it awesome"
It’s going to be a long time for Strikeforce to have brand recognition. They are better off getting their fighters recognized and then marketing those matchups:
Fedor Emelianenko vs Alistair Overeem and Dan Henderson vs. Gegard Mousasi in a Cage! – brought to you by Strikeforce/Showtime/CBS/M-1
So how the eff is it clever to go head to head with WEC for your first PPV? Even losing 25k in buys when you’re lucky to score 150k is a huge blow.
Blackout612- "Wuts teh UFC?"
Ubernoober- "It like two guy who just stand and swing for fence and try to knock each other shit out it awesome"
I don’t think it is clever to go to ppv at all, and I’m hoping they’re not going to. I just laid out some random evidence showing the possibility of it.
As for going up against the WEC? It makes sense if they’re worried about the UFC running a live show against them, but since I doubt they could with all their stars already lined up for other events, I wouldn’t even worry about going up against the WEC and pick a free night instead. Of course, there isn’t any free Saturday nights for the next 5 weeks, so…
Actually M1 might make less, but from CBS and Strikeforce point of view it might be worth it to give them a cut of the ppv revenue, which is based on sales, instead of a flat pay increase to appear on CBS.
or
M1 may be pushing for ppv thinking they’re more money to be made that there really is.
Either way, I don’t really think they’re going to ppv. At least, I hope not.
but would m1 agree to that?
We have to remember that they just got burned by Affliction on a deal and did crap PPV numbers with them, and then left a UFC deal on the table that was based primarily on PPV money.
I’m not sure they would agree to going on a PPV, especially up against Super 6 and the WEC. They must know that the numbers won’t be that great, and their portion of the small pie will not be that much, especially when showtime and strikeforce are goin to be needing part of that pie.
I’d like to know what PPV provider would pick up a show announced less than 2 months in advance over a show that has been announced since the middle of January

So UFC 113 in May already has tickets on sale and Strikeforce may of narrowed down their April show to the state they are going to have it in.
WIth WEC 48 tickets already on sale in Sacramento it would be fun if Strikeforce decided to go with San Jose(well fun for us on the internet discussing these kinds of things at least).
This is how the end begins
EliteXC, Affliction, and soon, Strikeforce.
When will these idiot decision makers realize that you need to promote these events for more than a month to bring in the viewers. Casual fans who are seeking MMA get quickly annoyed by the misinformation and indecision. It all looks extremely unprofessional too.
Several people on this site
guaranteed 20-30 Strikeforce cards a year. Its almost March and how many have we had?
I think 20 cards was the number Coker was throwing around for the next Fiscal year – 12 Showtime/CBS/PPV cards and 8 Challengers. Of course, the fiscal year starts in March, but for 2010 they’ve had the Jan 30th card, they have two challengers cards booked for February and March and the April 17th show in Nashville and maybe an April 24th card in California.
