UFC 111 Prelims on Spike TV to Feature Ricardo Almeida vs. Matt Brown and Nate Diaz vs. Rory Markham

From a press release in my inbox:

Ricardo AlmeidaMatt Brown

The first bout scheduled to air on Spike TV is a welterweight contest between Matt "The Immortal" Brown (13-7) and Ricardo Almeida (11-3). Brown has become a fan favorite since his stint on Season 7 of "The Ultimate Fighter," as his relentless style and devastating striking ability has garnered him a 4-1 record in the UFC, with all wins coming via TKO or submission. He is currently riding a string of three straight dominant performances against Ryan Thomas at UFC 91, Pete Sell at UFC 96 and, most recently, James Wilks at UFC 105. The Cincinnati based fighter will now look to put himself in the title picture with a fourth consecutive victory. Standing in his way will be a man fighting in his own backyard, Hamilton, NJ’s Ricardo "Big Dog" Almeida. The winner of two straight bouts coming into his matchup with Brown, most recently against Kendall Grove at UFC 101 this past August, this Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt will look to use his strong ground game to make a successful debut in the UFC’s welterweight division after years of fighting at middleweight.

Nate DiazRory Markham

The evening’s second televised bout is also in the welterweight division, and pits Rory Markham (16-5) against Nate Diaz (11-5). Markham, one of the game’s premier knockout artists, will look to use his immense punching power to stop his opponent, Diaz on March 27th. The winner of "The Ultimate Fighter 5," Stockton, CA based Diaz has amassed a 6-3 record in the UFC in less than three years, and his fight with Markham will see him transition from lightweight to welterweight, where he hopes his added power will augment his effective Cesar Gracie taught Jiu-Jitsu skills in stopping Markham and setting him on his way to welterweight gold.
UFC 111 now includes:
Main Bouts
- Georges St-Pierre vs. Dan Hardy
- Shane Carwin vs. Frank Mir
- Ben Saunders vs. Jake Ellenberger
- Jon Fitch vs. Thiago Alves
- Jim Miller vs. Mark Bocek

Preliminary Bouts:
- Nate Diaz vs. Rory Markham
- Ricardo Almeida vs. Matt Brown
- Kurt Pellegrino vs. Fabricio Camoes
- Rodney Wallace vs. Jared Hamman
- Rousimar Palhares vs. Tomasz Drwal
- Matthew Riddle vs Ricardo Funch

Spike TV will telecast live undercard bouts from UFC 111: ST. PIERRE vs. HARDY on Saturday, March 27 at 9:00 PM EST from the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ. The one-hour telecast will run with limited commercial interruption. UFC 111 will air on pay-per-view at 10:00 PM ET.

Good to see Ben Saunders on the main card.

With careful development I think Ben could be a future star.

He has a very hard fight on his hands here. Even though I’m a big fan I think he is going to lose.

Pru Center

I will be there, beyond pumped!!

As a relatively new fan of the UFC (last two years) I am beyond excited for this card.

I saw Machida fight at 104 in LA, hope this one tops it.

Jim Miller vs. Mark Bocek is on the main card and Ricardo Almeida vs. Matt Brown is relegated to the prelims, seriously?

Its a Spike prelim, if I were fighting, I would prefer that.

Some people think I am a dumb, ugly human being, but really I am a beautiful ape, with exceptional verbal skills.

Jim Miller is a New Jersey native.

Brown is a TUF guy, I believe Spike gets to pick there prelim, and they want to give TUF guys more exposure on their network then non-TUF fighters.

....Hence they've given us a Nate Diaz overdose on their Fight Nights.

I am a huge fan of Matt Brown, but I have to go with Almeida on this one because of Almeida’s BJJ and wrestling. I haven’t been impressed with Markham, and as much as I don’t like Nate Diaz, I am picking him to win this one.

Almeida is great

but I always root for Matt, and he handled the BJJ/Judo games of stun gun and wilks pretty well, so I think this should be at least competitive with at least one round going Brown’s way.

Matt Brown

Has been impressing me a lot the past year. Hopefully he’s soon done with his tour in the prelims and moves to more main card stature. Being seen on spike will help his audience appeal and get his name out, so its a good position for him now. If he gets past Almeida, he should fight an AKA head on a main card. I don’t think Swick would help his case much, but if Kos lost to Daley that could be a GREAT rumble. If Fitch loses decidedly to Alves, that could be a possibility, but a much larger jump up in competition. Besides I think Paulo will fight whoever loses that match.

Is anyone going to be watching this in NYC? I’m going to be leading an undergraduate field trip to the US for a week, and I’ll be around for this show. Wondering if anyone has good suggestions for places to watch.
