How competitive was this tournament?
Are we talking like the ADCC level of Sambo or is this more akin to Barnett beating the hell out of some amateurs in his old high school gym?
Without pain, without sacrifice, we would have nothing.

They are competing in a national tournament so presumably they are at least within the top percentile of Sambo practitioners within Russia. A couple of the guys foolishly try to trade punches with Aleks. The other guys want almost no part of it and try to take him down or throw him, but it usually just ends with a counter-sweep or in one case, an anaconda choke.
So if I understand correctly
The competition is the best that Russia has to offer, but that’s not saying much. So is this just a one-off deal or does this win mean he gets into a bigger international tournament?

It’s not saying much because guys like Fedor and Aleks have been training their striking and other MMA-related skills for years. Most of the guys they face are great at Sambo, but you can tell when the guys get jabbed in the face, they completely fall apart. They clearly just don’t have the boxing background that the Emelianenkos do.
Hmm.
Brother needs to take his potatoes out of his pocket before the photo op next time.
What is it about Russia and really bad athletic wear? 1989 called. It wants its shellsuits back.

Ha ha ha. I can see everyone’s headlines now. Fedor breaks hand at Sambo tournament and won’t be able to fight on Strikeforce’s April CBS card!?!?!

Maybe Dana was right
We all thought it was unfair for the UFC to not allow Fedor to compete in Sambo as a sticking point in early negotiations.
