UFC 110: Nogueira vs. Velasquez Post-Fight Recap and Analysis

Photo via Dan Herbertson of sherdog

-Hats off to Zuffa.  Fantastic first effort Down Under.  If Dana hadn't promised a return to Australia before this event, he would have now.  The Oz crowd provided a fantastic atmosphere for a night's worth of fights.

-Cain Velasquez fulfilled all the hype he garnered since first stepping into the Octagon.  Quick knockouts usually need to be taken with a hint of reservation, but Cain beat Nogueira to the punch from the opening bell.  As a bettor, Cain's ability to improve was the scariest attribute he had coming into the fight.  Power can be developed (see: Silva, Anderson) as a fighter ages, and Cain proved that tonight.  Fantastic stuff.

-Hard to see where Nogueira goes from here.  A rematch with Cro Cop would be fun.  Loser of Carwin/Mir might be good too.  I think he's still got a handful of fights left in him, but Minotauro's going to have a lot of problems going forward without the iron jaw that he relied on in his PRIDE heyday.

-Wanderlei Silva looked much, much, much better at 185.  He looked bulky and slow at 205 since entering the UFC, and he looked much more like the Axe Murderer of old at middleweight.

-Mike Bisping will have a real hard time moving up into the elite echelon of MMA without a reliable method of finishing.

-Wanderlei Silva's blitzkriegs at the end of rounds brings back memories of Bald Bull's Bull Rush.

-George Sotiropoulos put on a performance that one can only describe as beautiful.  Stevenson made a huge mistake when he let George get on top in round one, but I'm not sure the fight would have gone differently anyway.  George did a good job using his length to win the standup.  And on the ground, he outclassed Stevenson.

-Speaking of jiu jitsu, nice to see Chris Lytle make use of the entirety of his arsenal.  Oleg Taktarov would be proud.

-If the athletic commissions outlawed the left hook, Keith Jardine would be the greatest fighter alive.

-I thought Bader started to gas after round one, though he remained active up until the knockout.  It's a good step for his career, but I'm not ready to crown him at 205.

-The Cro Cop/Perosh fight went about as expected.  Cro Cop looked OK, but I think there's a couple of interesting questions to raise.  1) Why is he kicking less frequently?  2) Why does he refuse to cut off the Octagon and insist on following guys around?

[UPDATE] by Nick Thomas - UFC 110 Bonuses:

$50,000 "Submission of the Night" - Chris Lytle
$50,000 "Knockout of the Night" - Cain Velasquez
$50,000 "Fight of the Night" - George Sotiropoulos and Joe Stevenson

I agree on your assesment of Bader

It was a good fight from him, but I’m not sold on him being a future champ yet. Let’s see him take on Thiago Silva next.

Agreed

Forrest is no longer in title contention, but he is still a huge name. If Bader beats him that is a huge scalp to add to his resume, and if Forrest wins he is suddenly relevant again. Win-win for Zuffa.

That wasn't exactly a great night for early seasons of TUF alums

Bonnar, Jardine, Bisping, and Stevenson all losing tonight.

Great card, Rogan didn’t sound or act like he was high, and Velasquez and Sotiro showed they are legit.

I don’t think I’ve ever agreed with every single thing someone said before.

I’ve been paying more and more attention to tough-ass Sotiropolous (sp?) lately. Tough as hell, and good jits. Damn, I can’t believe how good he looked.

Wandy will help sell out shows all over the world for years, he is a true Hall-of-Famer. Give him Cote, so he can have one last dominant performance.

“TattooLand” and Hamill would be a badass fight, you have to admit.

I Hate Matt Hughes.

ooo good call

except cote would maul wandy bad. cote is the opposite of bisping. huge power in his hands and he throws when you exchange.. he’s not backing up or throwing jabs.

if there was a couple guys i would keep away from wand.. he wuld be one of em. vitor, silva, cote.. would wandy lifeless.

by waldog on Feb 21, 2010 8:44 AM EST up reply actions

Cote could batter Wand’s chin though. Whatever else you can say about Cote, the guy definately has power in his hands. I think we’ve seen that Wand’s chin is less than iron these days. But Cote vs. Wand could be an entertaining fight as I don’t think Cote would be as reluctant to exchange as Bisping or Franklin.

he’s only 22, no need to jump that fast in a stacked division.. give him time to grow as a fighter and as a physical person, and time to test his styles against different styles of fighters, by the time he’s 24-25 I think hes legit to go for a title run
it sucks seeing green prospects get early shots at elite champs and getting beat down for jumping the gun too fast, theres no need to rush

-Lytle finishing a fight by submission. Nuff’ said.

-George Sotiropoulos put on a beautiful performance. With continued improvement, I’d love to see him fight BJ before he runs off to welterweight again.

-I can’t help but feel bad for Jardine and Nog. Nog not so much, but man, Jardine is either on his way out, or on his way to headlining Spike Prelims.

I don’t think Kimbo is anywhere in the same ballpark as Jardine, but Kimbo could definately hit his chin and look impressive.

As I said, I really like Jardine, but his chin is getting punished, and eventually, he’s gonna be damaged goods. If he isn’t already. I don’t want Jardine stumbling over words and being forced to reduce his vocabulary when he could be doing something else.

Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Kimbo beat a passive Alexander but I fully believe Mitrione is going to punish Kimbo.

Mitrione had a bad shake on TUF. He was portrayed as a virus on the show but he continuously proved himself in the ring. Like the other fighters, conditioning was definitely a problem, but he has the heart to go toe-to-toe with any HW.

I believe his striking will be too much for Kimbo who has yet to impress me in an MMA fight.

I thought he was going to pull that fight off until he almost got choked out at the end of round 2. Wandy picked up the pace though, Bisping’s problem seems to be that he doesn’t have that second gear. Just a pretty good first gear.

by ChrisBat on Feb 21, 2010 1:18 AM EST up reply actions

You think Bisping would have won the third round? I thought it was Wand before the knock down, or very close.

by xDieseLx on Feb 21, 2010 1:18 AM EST up reply actions

I thought Bisping had the right game plan with the takedowns. He seemed to be weathering the storm during the second more or less. If he’d landed a few more take downs and managed to slow down the pace I thought he’d Rich Franklin his way to victory. But the worm turned when he was only saved by the bell.

Cain definatelly put himself right up front in the HW title shot picture after his dominant performance tonight. If Mir or Carwin are at less that 100% don’t be surprised to see him face Lesnar after tonight that boy is officially a star.

As far as Nog goes i’d love to see him rematch CC, it would give both a high profile fight that would keep them in the discussion of top HW’s.

Very interested in seeing what kind of press this gets in Australia

My guess is they made a lot of new aussie fans with this (did they get the show for free over there?), but I’m curious to see what the papers say about the event

Totally agreed about Cro Cop

For a guy training out of a K-1 gym and working solely on his kickboxing, I was surprised that Mirko only threw like 3 kicks and seemed to only throw one or two strikes at a time. For getting one of the weakest possible opponents thrown his way he really didn’t do much to impress.

Without pain, without sacrifice, we would have nothing.

by lowellthehammer on Feb 21, 2010 1:53 AM EST reply actions

Well, I guess that getting a new opponent 2 days before the fight, is going to have a big effect on your fight.

I think that Crocop had no idea of the strengths and weaknesses that his opponent had, so he had to feel him out in the ring.

by grein on Feb 21, 2010 1:56 AM EST up reply actions

Cro Cop hasn’t throw many kicks in the UFC in general, and doesn’t throw in combinations either. These two things have little if nothing to do with the opponent he was facing.

Without pain, without sacrifice, we would have nothing.

by lowellthehammer on Feb 21, 2010 2:04 AM EST up reply actions

I’m not sure if he’s lost it or if he was just throwing conservatively against a guy who had no stand up and whom he knew he had to beat.

His

opponents only chance was on the ground and Cro Cop knew it. He didn’t want to take any chances on having a kick countered with a take down.

Low bonuses – $50,000 in this case – usually means that they’re not expecting this card to get a lot of ppv sales. So they’re probably expecting 350,000 in sales. Higher sales usually means higher bonuses . All the way up to $100,000 for 100.

UFC Bonuses usually range anywhere from 50k to 70k depending on the show, I figure they have some sort of mathematical way of figuring it out or Dana just says fuck it and writes a number he feels like it down.

They scale the bonuses based on how many PPVs they think they are going to sell. That is why TUF finales, UFNs, and WEC events only pay 15K-20K in bonuses while PPVs are in the 40K-75K range. Obviously, Zuffa was not expecting a big PPV number for this show.

We had a big BBQ to celebrate the first UFC shown on free to air TV here in Aus, and it really couldn’t have been much better.

I totally admit that I was completely wrong about Cain. I had him picked as a one-dimensional pillow-hands wrestler, but finished a much respected and loved veteran. Maximum plus marks.

Wandy looked awesome, I thought he was winning even without the knockdown, but that was just gravy.

Wow, Go George!!! I was so psyched to see his fight, he did so much better than I was expecting going up a big level of competition.

All round such a great event, best I can remember for quite some time… and had a few people here who were relative MMA newcomers, who all seemed to be as blown away as I was.

Ive been a big Sotiropolous fan for a while and though the had potential to be at the top of the division, but I went against my heart and picked the more experienced Joe Daddy. He looked incredible on the ground, but his stand-up was far quicker and more accurate that Stevenson’s. I feel like there’s only a couple of guys who have the potential to trouble BJ in the future (and I emphasise ‘potential’ and ‘future’ here), and they are Sotiropolous; because of his amazing ground game supported by his solid boxing and Terry Etim because he’s a striker of different dimensions to others in the UFC. The guy’s kicks are incredible, he has great submissions and at 23 he has plenty of time to work on his wrestling.

I agree with Terry Etim

He is absolutely amazing. Ive became a fan of his when i noticed his ability to turn the fight around. With kicks, chokes, and everything.

He’s creative too and he’ll continue to get better.

Etim is an exciting fighter, but I don’t see him as a future contender. His wrestling is awful, and he hasn’t shown much of a top game with his BJJ (though that could be due to his awful wrestling). There are too many guys in the upper echelon of the UFC LW division who are tailor made to crush guys with that skillset.

Etim is basically the same guy as Donald Cerrone (minus the oversized ego and penchant for cheap shots), and I don’t see Cerrone as a future contender either.

I’m super crestfallen about Nogueira, but the silver lining is that (as others have noted) this sets up a Velasquez/Dos Santos match perfectly. Not only is it a sensible match, providing the winner of Mir/Carwin gets the title shot as planned, but Dos Santos is Nogueira’s star student. I’d love to see it.
