UFC 110 Results: Cain Velasquez Beats Down Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira

via www.cdn.sherdog.com

Cain Velasquez was not supposed to be the better man on the feet against the technical boxing of Nogueira but he was. Takedowns and submissions did not even play a role in the bout as Cain Velasquez battered Nogueira on the feet for a quick finish.

The fast rising Cain Velasquez faced by far his toughest test against the man many consider to be the 2nd best heavyweight in MMA history, Antonio "Minotauro" Rodrigo Nogueira. The Brazilian came out swinging and landing. But Cain Velasquez answered with a hard shot of his own. Cain landed leg kicks and then a combination of punches and kicks. Again. Velasquez repeated the feat and repeatedly scored on Nogueira. Then he caught Nogueira with a lethal uppercut/right combo that dropped him and several shots on the ground to end the fight.

It's a good thing.

I love Nog but his presence at the top of the HW division was holding back Dos Santos. Now that he lost this clears the path for Dos Santos to start fighting the other top guys. Cain is a Monster and I would love to see him and Dos Santos go at it.

so where does nog go from here?? i dont think he will be able to compete at the top of the food chain of the hw division. can he make a drop to lhw?

He already said no. If Mir loses to Carwin that fight makes sense. Besides that I wouldn’t mind if he moved away from fighting and started teaching more.

Cain beat Nog pretty much the same way Mir did just more quickly. Nog showed more striking then he did against Mir but I don’t think it would make a difference. Mir may not be as fast as Cain but he looked faster then Nog did Saturday. Mir showed the same clean striking against him last time and if they fought again I still think Mir would do the same thing.

fuck, tonight is a big reality check for Nog for sure, I still think he can be relevant, I don’t think he’ll be champ again though. fucking eh, I guess it’s just not his time anymore, this sucks. Props to Cain though, that was a great performance no doubt.

I kind of wonder if this was pride if he would have taken a few more shots and possibly wrapped Cain in guard. His arms weren’t moving though but there were plenty of Pride fights where he looked like he was out but they let the fight go a little longer then they do nowadays.

Cain is marching on, though.

Suddenly, Brock vs Cain is the fight in the HW division.

by a tommy point on Feb 21, 2010 12:40 AM EST reply actions

I disagree

If Mir beats Carwin that’s gonna be the big money match

by ufc4 on Feb 21, 2010 12:41 AM EST up reply actions

Big money? Sure. Stylistically? I’d rather see Brock vs Cain. 2 monsters 1 cage.

I specializes in grammar fail.

by a tommy point on Feb 21, 2010 12:47 AM EST up reply actions

While that might be the more interesting match for me and you all the UFC cares about is which fight makes them the most money for Brock’s first fight in a year and that’s Mir, assuming he can beat Carwin.

by ufc4 on Feb 21, 2010 12:48 AM EST up reply actions

I know, I know...

It stinks that the UFC is more sports entertainment than pure sport. Rankings should be the first thing taken into account when determining who fights for the title, though. On my list, Cain is now ranked higher than Mir.

Beating Nog > beating Carwin (assuming Mir wins). It should count for more in the rankings. Mir had his shot and got run over. Shouldn’t get a rematch after just one and a half wins (Kongo only counts as a half).

I specializes in grammar fail.

by a tommy point on Feb 21, 2010 1:07 AM EST up reply actions

And he got a shitle tot for doing so. He lost and now he is vulnerable to being passed over by more worthy competitors. At least he should be.

I specializes in grammar fail.

by a tommy point on Feb 21, 2010 1:12 AM EST up reply actions

I don’t know, I just think it’s real hard to say who is more deserving if Mir wins.

by ufc4 on Feb 21, 2010 1:13 AM EST up reply actions

If Mir wins, he deserves the shot. He has beaten Lesnar once already and should receive the rubber match.

Both have beaten Minotauro so Cain should face Carwin (assuming he loses to Mir) to set up the next matchup for HW.

Agree

Cain looked really good in his stand up. I thought for sure that the boxing ability of Minotauro would have a significant edge in this fight. Either I overvalue the fights in Pride, Minotauro lost a step, or Cain is the next coming in the HW division.

I think a little of all 3 and this guy should receive PRIME marketing. Especially with the new push with Spanish broadcasters for future MMA events. This would be the smart money move, opens up a very large market.

It’s the religious maniac Fedor fans that irritate me. They flip the fuck out if even the possibility of Fedor losing is raised.

Example:

I think Fedor is one of the greatest MMA champions of all time, but he is getting passed by in the sport the same way that Chuck Liddell and Matt Hughes have been passed by. The reason that he hasn’t lost yet is that he is taking on guys that are a) Freakshows/lower weight class b) Not at the top of their game anymore/member of the old guard of MMA heavyweights.

First of all Cain is going to have a little problem becoming the GSP of the heavyweight division seeing as how theres a guy that holds the belt in that division thats about 40 lbs heavier than Cain and just as good(if not better) of a wrestler too. Brock isnt going to stand and trade with Cain. Hes going to take him down quick fast and in a hurry and Cain is going to stay there as long as Brock wants him too. Secondly Wandy has every right to be pumped about his win. He beat a very game Bisping and did so in pretty convincing fashion.

by b2tharad on Feb 21, 2010 1:15 AM EST reply actions

Well, that’s in reference to him fighting Lesnar at 280. Mir felt the need to bulk up. With the right training I don’t think he’ll lose any speed.

I’m really not buying the Lesnar hype (and you can call me out on that because I wasn’t buying the Cain hype either), but Lesnar was getting pushed around by Randy who is a small HW too. I just think that putting on more weight when things are going well for him is not needed, if it ain’t broke….. :p

Everywhere I’m go, all them guys they says to me to kick for to him!

I actually agree

with you on Lesnar but adding lean muscle is going to help in general with a lot of the bigger heavyweights. Working for GSP. I think there’s a correct way to adding muscle and it takes longer than just “bulking up” whereas you can maintain or even increase your speed.

Cain is good at being a fast HW. Being a fast HW is great, look what it’s done for Fedor.

Nothing particular, just haven’t been a huge fan. I don’t hate the guy, I just have other HW’s I root for (Brock, JDS, Carwin).

I’m Italian. as of now I’m down with Cain.

Although if Lesnar comes back 100% I think Brock runs over him.

by ChrisBat on Feb 21, 2010 1:40 AM EST up reply actions

Your move Dos Santos, it better be impressive. Right now I would make Cain v Brock, and then the winner fights Mir v Carwin winner, but Dos Santos could steal that fight if he does what he has been doing against Gonzaga

by dpk875 on Feb 21, 2010 1:40 AM EST reply actions

That would be a fantastic fight to see. I’ve really been impressed with JDS’ handspeed and power. Cain obviously indicated he has the goods tonight too. I hope we get to see those two square off soon. I supose this does solve the JDS thinking title contention was Big Nog’s thing problem.

by ChrisBat on Feb 21, 2010 1:47 AM EST up reply actions

It wont happen. UFC won’t let it happen. Mir vs. Carwin= winner, Cain, JDS are Lesnars’ next 3 opponents.

by snakecharmer1340 on Feb 21, 2010 1:52 AM EST up reply actions

That’s probably true but its hard to say who the champ will be fighting two or three fights down the road as optomistically we get a fight this summer, then again late this year early next year. Thus the third fight is likely sometime summer 2011 and who knows by then? Strikeforce could be belly up and Fedor finally graces the octogon. Someone could come out of nowhere to rocket up the rankings with some big wins.

by ChrisBat on Feb 21, 2010 1:57 AM EST up reply actions

Yeah, just a great night of fights. Cain, Wandy, Bader and Crocop ftw baby! And even my boy Lytle got a fricken sub! How awesome and fast was that? =)

Even more impressive is the fact that the only 5 men who have now beaten Noguiera are now:
-Fedor
-Barnett
-Henderson
-Mir
-Velasquez

That is some truly rarefied air. And out of the 5, Cain is the only one to ever KO Nog in the first round.

Cain is the only one to KO a healthy Nog.

i'm a sad panda

the whole bar went silent after seeing nog got dropped … my heart is broken now … sigh … what happened? big nog never seem to get the rhythm going and boom it happened …

Once upon a time I was playing poker and talked to the next guy about my dislike for kids who wear MMA apparel acting all tough and give MMA bad rep. Sure enough Asian Dude sat down right next to me in his Affliction shirt and Tapout hat. Guy sitting next to me started asking me about the difference between MMA, UFC and Tapout. And Asian Dude proudly claimed he trains UFC. I was speechless. Then he starting telling me about his karate black belt, his wrestling pedigree and his dislike of jujitsu. He hates jujitsu because he does not like being on his back. (?!) Long story short, he then challenged me to spar with him so I invited him to my gym. He dissed my gym and never showed up. To this day I'm still waiting for him. Please contact me if you see Asian Dude.

like alot of guys already mentioned, bring on JDS vs Cain.

by kovy on Feb 21, 2010 7:58 AM EST reply actions

agreed

spreading 3 HW contenders out for brock is too long a time scale. i believe winner mir/carwin vs lesnar, then vs winner of JDS/Cain. JDS vs Cain would be an amazing match up.

The most impressive part of Cain's preformance

…Was his demeanor as soon as the fight was stopped. I’ve never seen any fighter so composed after such a huge win in their career, he was cool as a cucumber the second the ref pulled him off and through the post-fight interview. I was very impressed.

by SmokinJoe86 on Feb 22, 2010 11:36 AM EST reply actions   1 recs

Agreed

I’m with you. I was thinking the same thing after the fight. That’s a huge win for him and he wasn’t running and jumping around like other fighters do after a win.
I for one would love to see what Cain would be able to do against Lesnar.
