that actually bothered me, that he was proud his father crossed the border illegally so many times. i support diversity, i do NOT support illegal immigrants. If he had just said that he’s proud of his mexican heritage, no problem. This, I see some controversy arriving from this.
This is old and he’s said this before.

that’s fine if he has, i didn’t see it then, and would’ve probably said the same thing.

I can understand where you’re coming from, but I think a lot of people, if they had to break an immigration law to feed their family, would do it. Even the Minutemen guys.
I agree. If it came down to getting a better life for my family, I would do a lot of things to make that happen if necessary. Need can be a bitch sometimes.
You have to be the man... you have to be very, like, alpha male with her. You know? Decide what you do and everything. So, show her who's the boss, you know? - GSP
Sure they would.
That doesn’t mean we should applaud them for it. Us being hypocrites doesn’t stop the associated behaviour from being reprehensible.
I like using semi-colons; they make me feel smart.
It’s easy to talk smack about illegal immigration if you’ve never dealt with the US immigration system, which is mired in bureaucracy and backlogs, is hideously expensive and complicated to navigate even as a fluent speaker of English. Immigration reform needs to happen to allow men and women who want to work and contribute to this country to do so, not criminalize a guy who sneaks into the country and works to support a family on $2/hr cleaning toilets, picking lettuces, busing tables or whatever other crappy job they end up doing to get by.
People need to get the eff over this tattoo nonsense and put on their big girl pants. His tattoo clearly has no racial or otherwise nefarious or inflammatory meaning and people who are still getting their panties in a bunch are just coming across as being willfully ignorant.

My wife is from Canada
And we had to go through the same hoops as anyone from Mexico. Was it fun or easy? No, but we did it ourselves without the help of a lawyer. The reality is there should be a barrier to enter this country, we can’t allow everyone and anyone from any country to just come here. If we allowed that our social services would be completely overwhelmed.
If you can’t fill out the paperwork and wait with everyone else then you don’t deserve to be here, period.

Brown Pride is a particularly vicious Latino gang. I assumed the ink was in reference to that.
Perhaps my best years are gone. When there was a chance of happiness. But I wouldn't want them back. Not with the fire in me now. No, I wouldn't want them back.
You've been watching too much Gangland, homie.
They’re a gang from Chicago. Cain’s from AZ and now from Nor Cal. I’m not gonna get into the whole trying to explain the meaning of “Brown Pride” (like I have before on here) just keep in mind that tons of Mexican’s (gang related or not) have “brown pride” tattoos. You did say you assumed so don’t take this personal :)

And if you’re going to try to educate me tell me something I don’t already know.

There's too much you wouldn't know.
But I guess I can start with this: It’s Holmes, not “homes”.

One have to wonder, since his tattoo is obviously accepted and there’s no controversy about it. What would the response be to a fighter that would have had “White Pride” tattoo’d?
by fred042 on Feb 20, 2010 11:19 AM EST reply actions 1 recs
to be honest I think both are inappropriate. I think we should all be proud of who we are, and when answering someone that is talking crap about one’s heritage, it’s perfectly fine saying that you are proud to be from that heritage. When putting as a tattoo though, you are just shoving it on everyone’s faces without any premises. IMO it’s wrong for any race may that be white, black, hispanic, asian, etc.
Pain is Temporary
Pride is Forever
Apples and Oranges
You cannot simply swap “white” for “brown” without changing the meaning and context. Whites have not typically been the victims of oppression, genocide, ethnic cleansing, discrimination, colonialist expansion, and the like. Instead, whites have historically been the oppressor. The phrase “White Pride” is usually used to celebrate our racist legacy. In short, it is a phrase designed to celebrate white supremacy. “Brown Pride,” on the other hand, lacks all of these historical associations. It is not used as a way of celebrating a cultural history of racial oppression and exploitation nor is it used to tout the supremacy of the Hispanic people. Instead, it is used as an expression of protest and solidarity much like “Black Power”—i.e., as a way of celebrating the Hispanic struggle to overcome oppression, exploitation, etc. As such, “White Pride” and “Brown Pride” clearly don’t have the same use/meaning. So, it is understandable why we would respond differently to the former than we do to the latter. Or so methinks…

excuse me.
i would consider european people to be white, and for absolute certainty many european people have been the victim of genocide and all of the above. to my knowledge, mexicans and hispanics were never enslaved, or any of the above. so youre throwing in some dangeous groupings there. I think the point you make is okay, but you have to remember that many ethnic groups, not just the ones who have more pigment, have been oppressed.
I do agree that white pride is synonymous with aggressive racism. if its true that brown pride is a vicious gang than i’m still not okay with it, but its definitely not the same thing.

that’s true, they were already slaves in many of the cases (doesn’t make it right though, just stating the facts).

Yes, I meant
it a statement of fact, not endorsing any such activities.
and owned and beaten by whites
Not sure what that has to do with anything though!

Bullshit
I’m half Italian, my great grandfather went by another name for purposes of work and to avoid discrimination. Most Hispanics were from Spain, one of the most oppressive and colonial countries. Why do you think Central & South America consist of mostly Spanish speaking Hispanics? Because they oppressed the natives and took over the land.
The Spanish aren’t considered minorities in Europe so why the hell are Hispanics considered minorities when they come to this country?

we’ve had this argument a bunch of times. the “white pride” question is treading a thin line. Its the connotation that comes with both. White pride is a racist/ supremacist thing, whereas brown pride shows pride in his heritage and how his dad persevered through obstacles. I think we should trend away from this question. Although, it begs the question why Nick would post this knowing the route its going to inevitably go down.

what if a white man knew what white pride means to some people but still got white pride tattooed because he was proud of heritage? just like cain knows brown pride is latino gang? i don’t see how it can work one way but no the other?

He doesn't need to explain his Brown Pride tattoo
it’s a dumb tattoo and anything he does to say otherwise won’t have me convinced.

Rec’s for those who can think critically about race and understand america’s heritage of white supremecy. Good on you. Others, it’s called historical and social context, get yourself some.
I will echo the sentiment above, if you want a white pride tattoo, go do it, and then see who your friends are, and then find out about other folks with white pride tattoos and let me know how it goes.
Just an aside, as to “brown pride” being the name of a gang. There are countless street gangs in the united states and I would like to alert people to the existence of a south chicago group called, The Playboys. Guess what boys, if you own a playboy, you’re supporting a violent and murderous gang in chicago. And don’t forget the spanish cobra’s, who use a picture of a cobra that is a lot like the one Cobra Kia uses. Don’t forget about the bloods, fighters who bleed in the ring are clearly wearing colors and should be banned from the ring. I could go on and on but using that kind of logic hurts my head because it is so very illogical and makes me feel a little dirty.
Tell you what
Go back in time and tell the black slaves of the Spanish that the ancestors of the Spanish in the future call themselves ‘Brown’ and refer to pride about their culture as ‘Brown Pride’ and consider themselves oppressed.

A lot of you fools need to do your homework.
Stop googling shit pretending you know about history. Plain and simple, Brown Pride is NOTHING racist. Get over. This is an MMA site, not a political site. It’s only a matter of time till that the staff disables the comments on here.

I don't give a shit about his Tattoo
But spare the plea of the Mexican as a minority and stop the “Whites are most oppressive people in history”. I think all of us descended from countries and cultures with blood on their hands and baggage. But I’m sick of everyone comparing themselves to the oppression of the Africans or Native peoples.

Maybe he just supports the US energy suppy?
Brown Power – Electricity generated from the combustion of fossil fuels, which generates significant amounts of anthropogenic greenhouse gases. Brown power sources include coal, oil, and natural gas. Also, called Brown Energy.
Man, the next time this dumb discussion comes up, I'm hoping some idiot suggests...
…that he’d be happier if the tattoo said “BROWN SHAME.”
At least it’d be something new.
