Todd Duffee vs Mike Russow and Diego Sanchez vs John Hathaway at UFC 114 in May

Rising heavyweight prospect Todd Duffee (6-0, 1-0 UFC) will meet well-traveled veteran Mike Russow (12-1 1-0 UFC) on May 29th in Las Vegas at UFC 114.   MMA Junkie confirms the original scoop from the Times of Northwest Indiana:

The bout was first reported by The Times of Northwest Indiana's Caged In MMA site, and MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) has since confirmed that both fighters have verbally agreed to the matchup, and bout agreements are expected to be signed shortly.

Duffee was very impressive in his UFC debut with his lightning-fast, brutal KO of Tim Hague, although we really didn't get to see much of his skill-set aside from his killer instinct.  Nonetheless, the Hardcore Gym and ATT prospect has been seriously talked up on the southern MMA circuit for several years and with his looks, he could turn out to be a big blue-chip for the UFC if he continues to perform like he did against Hague at UFC 102.

Russow will be a good sophomore test for Duffee with his veteran experience and dangerous submission skills.  Although he hasn't faced the stiffest of competition in his career, he also has only one loss on his record, and that was nearly three years ago.

UFC 114 now includes:

Quinton Jackson vs. Rashad Evans

Todd Duffee vs. Mike Russow

Efrain Escudero vs. Dan Lauzon

[UPDATE] by Nick Thomas - Diego Sanchez (23-3) vs. John Hathaway (13-0) also set for UFC 114:

true hes a top 10 arguably a top 5 p4p fighter

but he has yet to truly dominate his weight class like a anderson silva or gsp and ifhe makes an eventually jump to lw i think he can dominate that as well as long as he beats bj

his potential is so high i definetly think hes a next big thing and a fighter to watch

Super awesome fight. Was just wondering where Russow is, so I’m glad to see him back too. Good test for TODDUFFEE (which is one word, guys).

What's the deal with this paper?

How does this newspaper manage to get info on fight signings and other news? I’ve seen them mentioned a lot here. Does anyone know?
It’s pretty good for a paper of that size, let alone writing about MMA to begin with.

They've got ties with a lot of the midwest gyms and teams

Russow’s a Chicago-based fighter so they probably got in touch with someone inside his camp.

The fact of the matter is that he is just so young that even if he loses his next three fights (arbitrary number), his potential learning curve is going to be very high. There’s always the possibility of Duffee crashing and burning, but I don’t believe that will happen.

I thought they were trying to buid Hathaway as their next big UK star

Sure, Diego needed an easier fight, but perhaps they should have given him someone like Jake Ellenberger or Dong Hyun-Kim instead?

by Scott Haber on Feb 2, 2010 9:09 PM EST reply actions

They’re taking a calculated risk with his career.

If he beats Diego, he’s a hero. If he loses, of well, he’s just a young guy still developing who took a loss from taking tough fights and being brave.

Win/win for Hathaway.

Stylistically, Diego has advantages everywhere. If Hathaway manages to get Diego on his back, I can see Diego forcing a scramble, but I see Diego putting Hathaway on his back. I don’t think it will go to decision with Diego winning any way he wants.

You know what I mean. Russow was never in tremendous shape to begin with, but Schoonover was actually pretty ripped at around 230lbs. Both of them look awful now.

by smoogy2 on Feb 3, 2010 12:22 AM EST up reply actions

Bizarre match-making with the Hathaway fight. They really are quite bad at sensibly building prospects a lot of the time, how are they going to make a 22 year old kid go from an unranked, one dimensional fighter in Paul Taylor to someone who was a top 10 WW?

A win over Hathaway does nothing for Diego.

That said I’m not counting John out, he’s a beast.

by An0nymous on Feb 2, 2010 9:43 PM EST reply actions

Russow

Russow will dump this dude on the ground and twist his head off. North South choke. Russow is a powerful wrestler, good luck on Duffee’s take down defense. We’ll see.

by wandyman on Feb 2, 2010 10:12 PM EST reply actions

As a chicago resident who has worked in certain places dealing with the police, and I’m going to go ahead and keep just what under my hat, I must say, I can’t wait to see Russow get his head punched in to the tenth row. This guy, besides being a typical chicago cop (sadistic and unaccountable) has been brought up on countless assault charges, one of which was against a sixteen year old, whom he choked out. You won’t find much digging, these were settled out of court and sealed, but you can certainly find his name attached to certain case files…if only depositions weren’t sealed. Rotten pig. I’m risking the warning, this is more than just fighter bashing, this is despising a toxic member of the chicago community. Can Todd do it, green as he is? Time will tell, Russow is no bullshit as a fighter, a very tough man, I’ll admit.

Send that head into the tenth row, Todd, do it for the concerned citizens of chicago.

or is hathaway a welterweight. I could have sworn he was a lightweight, but I don’t remember what I had for lunch much less that….

by Nick Travaglini on Feb 2, 2010 11:11 PM EST reply actions

Yeah, its at welterweight. Hathaway beat Paul Taylor at that weight from memory.

Not that I condone facism or any ism for that matter. Isms are in my opinion, not good. A person shouldn't believe in an ism, he should believe in himself.

I quote John Lennon, "I don't believe in Beatles, I just believe in me". Good point there, after all he was the walrus. I could be the walrus. Wouldn't change the fact I have to bum rides off of people.

This is a good “Houston Alexander” Check for Todd Duffee. Was the Quick Knock out a fluke, or is he for real. It should be a good test.

UFC is trying to establish its next WW contender. There are some interesting matchups they have made in the last week or so that I wouldn’t have made. Sanchez v Hathaway, and Condit v McDonald are both fights I didn’t see coming. If Hathaway and MacDonald win then UFC has two very interesting young, undefeated contenders. If they lose, then they get a lesson on stepping up in competition and hopefully come back better.

What does Duffee weigh? His pecs are unusually big. Usually MMA ripped dudes have the bigger shoulders and the pecs are more flattened.
He should have a pectoral fight with Kongo.
