Earlier this week I was wondering if there was any grappling footage of GSP and Nate. This is really cool. Now id like to see footage of GSP vs Gegard, Gegard and Jones, Nate and Gegard, Nate and Jones
.

Awesome footage. I agree with DamnSevern and wish there were more.

Nate’s offensive wrestling looks to be much improved. I think that’s a big part in his evolution as a fighter. Still, GSP is a monster in the TD department, even against the #2 MW in the world.

They were not going nearly as hard as I expected, letting each other down real easy and such, I wonder if this was as “easy” day or this is how they normally train to prevent injuries.

They were just drilling in the first half. The second half of the video looked like they were going full speed.

First half of the vid appeared to be by-the-numbers kind of stuff. Second half they were going full speed.

GSP is amazing.

That is all. That’s a top-three guy in the weight division above him that he’s dominating.

Although detractors decry (MMA) as a brutal, bloody form of human cockfighting, aficionados know it is a brutal, bloody, totally fucking awesome form of human cockfighting. -The Onion

I don’t know if he was necessarily dominating him. We really only saw him complete one really nice high c on Nate. He almost had success with the front headlock, but it looked like Nate brought it back to neutral. Nate had a really nice inside switch against their trainer.

Taking this video at face value, I’ll note that one of the remarkable things about it was how easily GSP was able to handle Nate in a pure wrestling setting. In an MMA match, the gulf between them would in likelihood widen even farther because of all of the striking variety he brings to the table and how well he sets up his shots.

Nevertheless we don’t know who edited this video and whether any takedowns Nate had of GSP were edited out or whether they wrestled for an hour and the three or so takedowns we saw were the only ones that occurred.

In any case, good stuff.

The thing that would work against GSP in an MMA bout, though, would be Nate’s reach advantage which would limit how and when GSP could try for takedowns.

GSP’s reach is actually 76", and is longer than Nate’s, which is 74". Nate is slightly taller than him though.

REALLY?!?

Holy crap. I had no idea. Nate just looks so much bigger. I wonder who has the longer “functional” reach?

It's a good thing that Hardy already expects to get taken down...

GSP is a beast.

You have to be the man... you have to be very, like, alpha male with her. You know? Decide what you do and everything. So, show her who's the boss, you know? - GSP

Someone seems to have Inadvertently replaced GSP’s legs with tree trunks

Yeah that’s what I noticed. Holy shit the guy is huge.

Somewhere around the second Matt Hughes fight I noticed his legs start to get bigger and bigger. It’s like they have no cap space on how big they can go. But combine all that strength with incredible flexibility and that’s why GSP is so hard to sweep and stuff his takedowns. His upper body is along for the ride compared to his hips and legs.

by Dooda on Feb 2, 2010 6:40 PM EST up reply actions

His legs were always huge, it’s obviously a genetic thing; but he also hit that mid-20s “fill out” stage around the time of Hughes II, and the wrestling training probably doesn’t hurt him any.

Just by watching this video alone taught me a lot of what these guys are doing in the cage. The transitioning is amazing.
