Ben Rothwell and Elvis Sinosic Out of UFC 110, Anthony Perosh Steps in to Fight Cro Cop

According to ufc.com:
A shoulder injury suffered by Elvis Sinosic has forced the cancellation of his rematch with countryman Chris Haseman, and heavyweight Ben Rothwell has been sidelined by an illness, forcing him out of his bout with Mirko Cro Cop. Australian veteran Anthony Perosh will step in to face Mirko Cro Cop.

The rest of the now nine bout UFC 110 card remains unchanged.
Anthony Perosh (10-5 MMA, 0-2 UFC) steps in on one days notice before tomorrow's weigh-ins.

[UPDATE] by Nick Thomas - Anthony Perosh is ready and able:
"I actually said ‘no’ originally," admits Perosh. "I look up to Cro Cop and he’s a fellow Croatian. My parents are Croatian and I’ve actually been training the other Croatians appearing on this UFC 110 card. "I then went and watched yesterday’s (Thursday) press conference and listened to the comment Dana White made about how many fighters actually turn down opportunities. That just made me realise what a big chance this was. How could I turn down the opportunity to fight on the main card at UFC 110 against one of the best guys in the world? Not only that, the fight takes place on the UFC’s first ever show in Australia. I quickly called Joe Silva back and said, ‘yeah – I’ll do it’."

"I’m not looking to make any excuses after the fight, whatever happens. I won’t complain about not being fit or taking the fight on short notice.

"My last seven fights have taken place at light heavyweight. I’ve actually been cutting a bit of weight recently, as I thought there was the chance I may step in for Elvis to fight Chris Haseman. I’ll probably walk into the ring at around 220-pounds. I’m comfortable at this weight and not worried about my shape or fitness. I’m ready to fight now."

It's a chance of a lifetime for him.

Why wouldn’t he do that? It’s a win-win situation for him, he suddenly gets in the main card of the big show, and he has a chance to beat a slightly faded yet still dangerous MMA legend in Mirko.

He was probably working with one of the Australian fighters on the card, so it’s not like he will do a Wes Sims and come in completely with out training.

What?

For Perosh i see the benefits. But are you telling me this is any better than Sims fighting Lashley? Even if Perosh was training with Elvis for the fights, there is a difference between training with someone and getting ready for a fight.
So Cro Cop a much more experienced fighter who just faced JDS, is going up against a fighter whose history is even worse than Wes Sims on one day notice.
If this isn’t the definition of “non-competetive fight” then what is?

by John Nash on Feb 18, 2010 8:25 PM EST up reply actions

The simple fact that, If Perosh has stepped in a training facility, it will be much more different than Wes Sims’ situation…

Not saying it would be more competitive, but it’s not like you’re pulling a guy off his couch to fight.

by Anton Tabuena on Feb 18, 2010 8:43 PM EST up reply actions

Still

you’re putting one of sports most feared strikers up against a guy who was pummeled standing by Jeff Monson on a single day’s notice. competitive wise this may be worse than Sims/Lashley.

The UFC should cancel the bout.

by John Nash on Feb 18, 2010 8:51 PM EST up reply actions

I get that,

but you kinda missed my point. The only reason I brought up Wes Sims, was to say that ‘at least he probably trained more than that guy.’ I wasn’t really talking about it being a more competitive fight than Lashley Sims.

and as a fan, I’d hate it if they cancelled this bout… I’d rather see Mirko win (or maybe lose) over an unknown than not see him fight at all.

by Anton Tabuena on Feb 18, 2010 8:58 PM EST up reply actions

I understand

But as a fan I would rather see Mirko fight someone who has if not a chance at least a good chance not to be carried away on a stretcher.

I may complain about a lot of the UFC’s business practices, but, outside of some fantasy Kimbo match ups, I have never called a UFC fight a “freakshow”. This is that close.

Your not going to get anything good on one days notice, I don’t care who they get it’s going to be a mess. The guys record doesn’t bother me as much due to how poor Cro Cop has looked in his last couple of fights but the last minute bit really is a bit too much to swallow. This puts them in a bad spot and I guess this is the best they could do but yea this doesn’t hold up to expected UFC quality and really sucks ass.

by who me on Feb 18, 2010 9:29 PM EST up reply actions

Strikeforce had plenty of time to get a replacement and was dragging their feet. If they wouldn’t have tried to slip in a bum coming out of the battle at the barn league to fight lashley they wouldn’t have had to screw around with finding someone desperate enough for the money to fight without a training camp.

by YoungGun on Feb 18, 2010 10:37 PM EST up reply actions

Chance of a lifetime or not, although i agree it is and fat paycheck or not ( I doubt it will be THAT fat) it does take major balls to step in on days notice to fight anyone let alone the legendary Cro Cop.

Regardless of the possibility of participating in a training camp or not its a brave move. Mike Pyle stepped in on I believe 2 days notice to fight BROCKLARSON at UFC 98 and ended up getting tooled on the ground and arm triangled. I’m fairly certain he was staying active before he got the call too.

Paycheck or not stepping into the octagon with Mirko F’ing Crop Cop is a ballsy thing to do with one days notice. Why anything gets in the way of that simple idea is beyond me.

4 guys at 205 turned down the fight with Anderson Silva before James Irvin accepted it. Did he want a paycheck, the exposure, the chance of a lifetime, the ability to test himself against the best? Definitely. None of those things should take away from him stepping up to take the fight.

That was the main point i was making.

And the point I was making is all the things you listed are just as much of a guess as what I said. Truth is nobody knows the reasoning. Sure it’s ballsy but for the right price I’d let Mirko kick me in the head Saturday night, I got kids to feed.

Stepping up to fight CroCop with Peroshian skill set is ballsy. It doesn’t matter if he is doing it to feed his kids or buy a truckload lollypops. End of discussion.

by coleko on Feb 18, 2010 9:39 PM EST up reply actions

Let’s not pretend like CroCop is some world beater, he’s probably in the bottom quarter of UFC HW’s at this point in his career even if everyone wishes otherwise. Is he better than Peroshian? Sure, but stepping up to fight CC on short notice isn’t the automatic death sentence it was 5 years ago.

by ufc4 on Feb 18, 2010 9:44 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Peroshian isnt a person, it was a word I made up describing Perosh’s skill set. Perosh wont be able to take him down and is a far far inferior stand up fighter. Say what you will about Cro Cop but if motivated he is still a great fighter. So yes that takes a lot of balls.

by coleko on Feb 18, 2010 10:05 PM EST up reply actions

Lol, I couldn’t remember the guys name so I just went back and skimmed over your comment. When was the last time we saw a motivated Cro Cop? I think all the live for this guy is blinding everyone who remembers the way he was. Chuck Liddell and Matt Hughes used to be amazing fighters too. Are they still dangerous? Sure. But they aren’t feared like they used to be and they will most likely never regain that. CC is in the same boat.

by ufc4 on Feb 18, 2010 10:13 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Have you seen Cro Cop fight? Have you seen Perosh fight? Its a brutal mismatch if this guy got to put in a full camp, but on 1 days notice? Insane!!

Is Crop-Cop past his prime? Yes. But for people to act like he suddenly sucks now is absurd, he would still be a top 10 fighter if his ego would let him drop to 205.

by coleko on Feb 18, 2010 10:25 PM EST up reply actions

Yes, I’ve seen Cro Cop fight, and since he joined the UFC I have yet to be impressed by him. I never said he sucks but to pretend like he is anything close to what he was back in ’04 or ’05 is absurd.

I consider it a disaster because there is no upside.
Crocop wins .. he was supposed to win a guy with a questionable record and 1 day to prepare
Crocop loses.. do we even need to go there?

I feel really bad for Haseman and Sinosic, they both did a a lot for the sport in their native countries and who knows if they’ll be given an opportunity again to compete in the homeland on the biggest MMA stage?

Obviously I was taking it too far calling it a disaster and in the end it doesn’t really hurt the fights I was most interested in but I think people aren’t looking at the bigger picture.

Perosh has much better stand up than Elvis though.. if that really means anything ;)

He did when they were more active a few years ago anyway. Not so much now though based off his most recent fight.

Elvis has decent power and dropped Bisping with a knee and rocked Forrest a little bit. I’ve only really seen Perosh get knocked silly on the feet, especially his fight against Rimbon.

Perosh was around 230 when he fought in the UFC in 2006. Who knows what he weighs now.

The fight will go:

Mirko stalks Perosh, Perosh looking scared. Cro Cop lands a body kick, that hurts Perosh. Perosh circles wildly and gets hit with another body kick. Perosh’s hands go low and he’s kicked beautifully upside his head.

...the amount of fights getting cancelled is getting ridiculous.

Does anyone have stats from other combat sports to compare with this?

The brand is taking a huge hit. Less people will pay to watch, as this continues. I know injuries happen in combats sports, but I have been a serious fan since ’05 and I have never seen these number of pullouts in the past 3 months that can even remotely compare.

by Jayce Jon on Feb 18, 2010 9:27 PM EST reply actions

More cards = more chances of injury pull outs

Plus other than the Papa Shango cursed 108, I don’t think it’s been that bad…

Barry would have destroyed CroCop.

I dunno about that, especially both being K1 bred fighters and Cro Cop going back to his K1 ways/days and training with top Notch K1 fighters. I actually see Cro Cop taking that one. Heck just look at Cro Cop in his last interview or two, you can see it in his eyes and face, looks alot more confident in himself, has more color in him/not as pale/worn out looking. Im really hoping and thinking that he has found motivation an rejuvenation and is out to destroy!!

Hell I just watched an interview hour ago saying he wants two more fights at minimum in the UFC an his last fight in K1, Hook up Barry/CC there!!!

How do you Know where Im at? If you dont Know where Ive been...Understand where Im coming from??

Cornermen get paid by the fighters, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they did that back hom off the books instead of getting all of the cornermen work visas every time there is a fight outside the country.

from

Brent Brookhouse over at SBNation.com/mma:

THis is an even more winable fight for Cro Cop and if he loses to Perosh on one day notice there is a very, very big problem in Mirko’s career. Sinosic/Haseman was strictly a local attraction bout so that isn’t a huge hit to the card.
.
The top end of this card remains very, very good.

by Anton Tabuena on Feb 18, 2010 10:04 PM EST reply actions

On the plus side if this ends early we should at least get some undercard action, and there’s some good fights on there.

Cro Cop wins by LHK of Death… this will be the first death in an MMA fight by way of decapitation. I predict The Hippo’s head will end up in Row 43. Anyone think he’ll punt it farther than that? Although it does fucking suck that Rothwell pulled out, now this win won’t really mean anything for CC’s career, but hey at least he’ll get a great opportunity to kick this dude’s head off and add another highlight-reel KO which we haven’t seen from him in a while!

There is nothing you can do if a guy catches something a week before the fight but for Elvis to back out of a fight because of a shoulder injury the week before a fight is weak. He just blew his last chance at being in the UFC, you gotta fight through that when you’re at his point in his career very weak.
