The Ohio State Athletic Commission has declined to sanction a proposed bout between Tim Sylvia and Wes Sims for Adrenaline MMA IV in March, declaring it "non-competitive".

Right, because Sims has always been known for his thunderous right hand.

Right and Sylvia has never lost to a much lower caliber fighter. Especially not one with a submission loss to Kimbo Slice.

“Right and Sylvia has never lost to a much lower caliber fighter.”

As has Georges St Pierre, and Anderson Silva, and BJ Penn….

Ya, shit happens and Sylvia has not been setting the world on fire in the last couple years so what I am saying is anything is possible. Anderson Silva, GSP and BJ are great examples thank you.

Glad to see

others are being logical about this.

Sims is a better fight than Hinkle.

by Wolfgangsta on Feb 17, 2010 12:07 AM EST up reply actions

Ummmm

GSP has only lost to Hughes & Serra, and they’re both studs. BJ’s only lost to Machida, GSP, Hughes, & a Prime Lil Evil. Anderson is the only real viable example there, because of the losses to Azeredo, Takase, & Chonan earlier in his career.

But yeah, the Mercer loss was embarrassing for Sylvia and honestly I don’t think the comission should’ve put the brakes on Big Tim/ Wes.

So Serra isn’t a lower caliber fighter than GSP? I never said the guy sucks, the point is in MMA anyone can get caught, one punch is all it takes.

From memory, some athletic commission wouldn’t let the UFC put on Mir/Sylvia 2, when Mir was looking awful and Sylvia was top 5. Could be misremembering tho…

Good. Surely there is a more respectable opponent for Sylvia out there.

Sylvia will now face Branden Lee Hinkle and Sims will face Kerry Schall.

They already fought once

and it was non-competitive then…

Sure glad Lesnar got his shit straightened out.

According to Tim they tried to get Lashley to fight him instead of Sims. Unfortunately Strikefarce said no.

Sylvia isn’t that far removed from a lengthy stint as a top 10 heavyweight. Since 2008 Sims fought once on TUF (got subbed by Wren) and once in Strikeforce (handled by Lashley). It’s not hard to see why Ohio would tell them no on this one.

The big takeaway here is that it’s nice to see AC’s telling promotions “no” on certain fights.

Tim is probably wishing the Ohio AC had refused to sanction his match against Randy a few years back.

by ufc4 on Feb 16, 2010 10:55 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

I agree. It’s nice to see the Athletic Commissions doing this. It sends a message to MMA promotions that they better be making sensible matches. This is good for the sport.

Just BE.

I think athletic commissions should be taking these steps

once they are competent. Until we have qualified refs and judges, I’m wary of a commission meddling.

Ohio Commissioner Bernie Profato added this:
“Brandon Lee Hinkle has been approved,” Profato stated. “He has faced tougher opponents and is also a professional boxer. In Hinkle’s last fight, he went four rounds with a 20-2 Chris Tuchscherer, who just earned a victory at UFC 109.”

Silvia vs. Sims…..YAWN! nuff said!

by DaBooYaKID! on Feb 17, 2010 1:40 AM EST reply actions

They’re worried Sims is too tough for a fighter who got beat by Ray Mercer in nothing flat.

Damn...

I was really hoping to see a Sims/Sylvia Test of Strength…

Thank goodness some athletic commissions are finally doing their jobs and actually paying attention to the crap they are sanctioning. They should be doing more of this and being even more strict about which fights they allow to happen but at least this is a start.

by who me on Feb 17, 2010 8:40 AM EST via mobile reply actions

I actually like this.

Going off records alone is misleading. At this point Sims is not taking the sport seriously. I doubt he’s seriously training and at this point he’s making a mockery of the sport by using his name to collect paychecks and not taking it serious. I’m glad someone did something about it.

by xbuckeyex05 on Feb 17, 2010 10:03 AM EST via mobile reply actions

While I dont think this would have been a competitive fight, I also dont think it was so horrible that they should have canceled it, and Hinckle is really no better.

by metaldome on Feb 17, 2010 11:07 AM EST reply actions

Good

Wouldn’t mind Tim getting back on the comeback trail in a more legit fight.

Once things get heated and someone starts name calling and being belligerent then it’s good that someone comes in a puts out the fire and edits out the bad stuff. A big thank you to whomever took care of this one.

by who me on Feb 17, 2010 12:23 PM EST up reply actions

huh…I didn’t think it was all that bad, and thought there were some valid points made. Didn’t even know they had moderation on BE…

by WestbergIDFC on Feb 17, 2010 12:41 PM EST up reply actions

“Not all that bad” is still not all that good, and I for one certainly appreciate that the tone of the discussions here is much more cordial than at other MMA related sites. If a few legitimate posts get thrown out along with all the garbage, I think that’s an acceptable loss considering the alternative.

Technically, only Haber and Anton are "community moderators".

The rest are editors, and if you call them “mods” or “moderators”, Luke will hunt you down, screw off you head, and shit down your neck. Whatever the appellation, they keep the site clean and largely stupid-free, and for that I’m happy.

Valid points or not I would say that insulting our gracious host is probably a really bad idea. He went beyond just discussing the subject to being a real jerk about this.

Street fight!!

Hell they won’t sanction the fight. Let’s take this fight to the streetz! Silvia vs. Simms in the tough streetz of ohio. Then put it on Youtube. Let’s do dis!
