Quote of the Day: Alistair Overeem - "I Will Definitely Fight Fedor This Year"

"I've been training for a few days, and came here in Croatia to relax a bit. My next fight is in Dream in March. Don't want to discuss opponents yet."

"It's true that I haven't defended it for 2 years. Actually, i had something scheduled for 2009. but then I got injured. The real truth is that there weren't any real opponents for me to fight at the beginning of Strikeforce. Everything was new and there was no one to fight. They didn't complain and I competed in Dream and K-1 in the meantime. Then when real fighters came, I got injured in 2009. I cut myself, and had a serious bacterial infection."

"I will definitely fight Fedor this year. There's no doubt about it, unless he says no. I don't believe he will, but I’m a little worried about his managers. I'm sure he wants to fight, but I’m not sure people behind him do too."

"Besides Fedor, there’s Brett Rogers. Big guy that doesn't worry me that much. Strong, but talks to much. I will fight him soon as well. Then there’s Fabricio Werdum, and I definitely want to kill him. He’s a loudmouth, but I think he’s first in line for Fedor, so that fight will wait a bit. Finally there’s Andre Arlovski. A very good fighter I will also fight eventually."

"I wouldn't say UFC has the toughest competition. I think Strikeforce is getting stronger, theres me, Rogers, Fedor, Werdum, Arlovski... I'm not sure, I’d even say that the Strikeforce HW division is stronger then UFC's right now. So no, I’m not thinking of going there."

"I think I’m currently in the top 5. There's Fedor, and that big guy from the UFC, Brock Lesnar. Not sure about the rest, id say Dos Santos is up there. He really impressed me."

is it wrong of me to like alistair’s chances in this fight? (braces for backlash)

by mortal wombat on Feb 16, 2010 5:03 PM EST reply actions

no idea really

who was the last good fighter overeem fought? cro cop when he got dq? any good mma fighter can beat the fuck outta cans but its a different story when u fight good fighters who press u and put u in danger

overeems new body thanks to his horsemeat (we’ll just call it that to avoid bashing) might help him against top level competition which he historically struggled with when he was a lhw, but i think drs say that horsemeat hurts ur joints and breaks ur body down and historically fighters who have eaten alot of horsemeat havent fought as consistently well (belfort and baroni for example)

thing is, i’ve thought it before, is that we all know fedor will go at a fighter’s strength. and AO’s strength happens to be world-class kickboxing. if it becomes a kickboxing match, he can win

not that i'd bet on it, though..

Are we overating his kickboxing

His striking skills didn’t look anything spectacular to me in the last K1 Grand Prix?

by SES 84 on Feb 17, 2010 12:34 PM EST up reply actions

He’s KO’d other champion kick boxers, and while he may or may not be the top dog in a straight up elite-level kickboxing match, compared to most MMA practitioners, his striking is usually marginally-to-decisively better than his opposition’s.

i mean i know fedor gets put into bad positions all the time and wins anyway, but sooner or later i have to imagine someone with overeem’s strength and skill might not get caught and eek out a decision. still too much of a pansy to bet on it though.

by mortal wombat on Feb 16, 2010 5:18 PM EST up reply actions

Fedor loopy asses punches leave him open for a brutal counter like Megareem did to Hari.

But… Fedor is super quick and seems to be impervious to getting KOed.

Overeem still has a weak chin and it will be, no matter how big he gets.

by grein on Feb 16, 2010 6:11 PM EST up reply actions

Exactly.

Unless he gets Fujita’s again, it’s Fedor all day. But Ubereem is one of two HW fighters who I believe can do that to him, the other being JDS.

I’d say it’s the most competitive fight for Fedor right now. Yeah, I said it.

I really hope this comes into fruition. Looking @ the names he just dropped, it would be awesome to get Strkfrc Top 5 and UFC top 5 in a fantasy Tourney. I’m all giddy just thinking about it.

Whatevah. Megareem is a top 6 heavyweight, not a top 5 one.

ok this made me laugh…but he’s not top 6…top 11 for sure though.

“Megareem” mmm… I like “Ubereem” better, it has a better ring to it.

He sure did a 180 on his stance with the UFC in a matter of 2 weeks. Guess he’s got some fights to sell though.

I won’t believe this fight is happening until Fedor’s fist is bouncing off Overeem’s chin.

7 years from now...

this fight will be getting lots of play on “Best of Strikeforce”, Fridays on SPIKE.

Really the only Fedor fight outside of the UFC that excites me.

him vs. werdum or bigfoot doesn’t interest you?

by Austin Martin on Feb 16, 2010 5:25 PM EST up reply actions

nah

no Werdum or Bigfoot. I’s still like to see Barnett, but I can’t imagine anyone betting their promotion on that again,.

Use all ten points.

by MasonA on Feb 16, 2010 5:26 PM EST up reply actions

not even remotely

the werdum fight sucks and i dont think bigfoot is a top 20 heavyweight hed get destroyed by fedor

by milk72 on Feb 16, 2010 5:34 PM EST up reply actions

I’ll gladly watch Fedor on free TV, but Werdum has no path to victory .

I felt bigfoot won his fight against werdum. He was much more active with his standup and landed some nice blows in the early rounds. Bigfoot vs. Fedor would have been more exciting.

The ultimate for me would be Fedor vs. Pudz.

by brc_submission on Feb 16, 2010 6:23 PM EST up reply actions

No kidding

We heard all the same stuff when he re-signed with Strikeforce nearly a year ago.

I have no problem with Alistair concentrating on his kickboxing career, more power to him as far as I am concerned. I just wish he would quit pretending that he is still serious about MMA.

by Steve4192 on Feb 16, 2010 7:49 PM EST up reply actions

Hmm..

I like Overeem’s physical precense, he’s freaking huge and has an interesting persona. However, I don’t think he’s anything special when it comes to fighting.

Recently he lost to Badr Hari in a disappointing performance. This is after he mentioned that K1 was too easy compared to MMA. Before that He fought an aging Fujita, typically awful freakshow Thompson, a combined K1/MMA 41 loss record Gary Goodridge , and a steadily declining Mark Hunt.

In my opinion, in all the top talent that he has fought (Nogueira, Rua, Werdum), he has lost convingly. He seems a bit slow nowadays, much slower than the days where he was slim and trim.

by brc_submission on Feb 16, 2010 6:17 PM EST reply actions

Right...

He lost to Badr Hari, arguably the greatest striker in the world who was tearing through top competition all night, in a kickboxing fight. This was after Alistair hit top 10 kickboxer Texiera with a knee that caught on fire as it connected, knocking him into the twelfth fucking dimension. Oh yeah, and he’s 1-1 against Badr Hari. We can play this game all day.

I think his cardio will be much better without the weight cut, and HW competition isn’t as fast as LHWs, so the speed difference is not a big deal until he fights Fedor. Also, lets not forget he did pretty effing good against Shogun until he gassed.

I just want to see him fight in the U.S. The opponents he picked are all fights that I’d like to see just for the fact that he hasn’t fought many quality Heavyweights lately.

I don’t know which statement is more delusional, him saying that SF has better HW’s than the UFC or that he’s top 5 wow.

Not sure about top 5 .. definately top 10 though

if he fights Fedor it will be a long overdue step up in opponent 4 both parties

so then Dad goes and turns the knife on her .. then he turns to me and sez ........................................... Why so Serious ??

"Shit or get off the pot"

seems to be highly appropriate when talking about Overeem and Strikeforce.
