The Superbowl halftime show, MMA opportunity?

I thought of writing this while, like most of you, I sat on my couch surrounded by friends watching the big game. Many ups and downs no matter who you cheered for or if you only watched for the commercials. Then came what was once something to behold now, in my opinion, a chance to go make a beer run or shoot heroine between your toes. The super bowl halftime show.

I fall above the crucial male demographic of 18-35, but I tend to agree with that ranges general outlook. Take for instance the last 3-4 Super Bowl halftime shows. I asked a fellow Super Bowl attendee if he could name any of the last 4 halftime shows, he could, he remembered Bruce Springstein. The reason he remembered? Because he rammed his crotch into a camera during a slide. This is a totally guy way to remember but I feel he is the exception.

If the above picture doesn't get you excited then your leaning towards my way of thinking already, and that is counter programming the Super Bowl halftime show. It is not a new concept but I think that if Spike or Versus were to put on maybe a 1 – 2 fight show during this period they could garner some viewer ship and get the sport some more exposure. I don't believe the sport is overexposed or over saturated and getting some of that demographic watching the Super Bowl to tune in is a good thing.

These fights would not have to be barn burners but they would require some names to draw in the casual fight fan or the uninitiated. However, the more often fights are on cable or public stations it gets a little more mainstream a little more accepted. This way the mainstream fan may eventually enjoy fights often, maybe even something along the lines of Friday Night Fights that used to draw some of us to boxing. The purist of MMA can watch a young up and comer once a week and your local bar hooligan can scream enjoyment dong his best Chris Tucker impersonation " He got knocked the eff out!"

Even if this is just a fantasy, I need the delusion to get me past the geriatrics gyrating on stage and the 50+ year old crowd of fans. I feel like they didn't allow them on field this year due to not having enough ensure for them to pound following all the excitement. Thats just me.....
