Report: Phil Davis vs Alexander Gustafsson Expected for UFC 112
According to MMAFrenzy, highly touted prospect, Phil Davis (5-0) will have his second fight soon, most likely against fellow undefeated light heavyweight, Alexander Gustafsson (9-0):
Phil Davis, fresh off his successful UFC debut at UFC 109, is expected to return to action against Alexander Gustafsson on April 10 in Abu Dhabi, MMAFrenzy.com has confirmed with a source close Gustafsson.
Phil Davis impressed in his debut against Brian Stann on UFC 109, as he used his wrestling pedigree well to dominate his opponent throughout the bout. He says there is still a lot more he can improve on, and since Gustafsson has a good boxing background, the 6'5 swede could provide a good test for the former NCAA wrestling champ's stand up skills.

Phil looks great
But I hope they don’t rush him, he still needs a lot of seasoning.

yessssssssss
Get this kid back in the cage as soon as possible. I love good new talent.
Thanks for the link Anton.
With 112 being an afternoon PPV there won’t be any prelims on Spike, so I’m hoping this fight makes it onto the broadcast as it’s a solid matchup between two good prospects.

This will be a war!!!
Gustaffson’s stand up is brutal and Davis’ takedown are unstoppable. This will be a great fight.

Fixed.
Great Takedowns v Great Striking =/= war in most cases (one dimensionally speaking)

I don't like it
They stand to gain nothing from facing one another after only airing once each— people don’t know who they are yet. And this damn card has too many fighters I want to see for a card that won’t get Spike prelims. Eff…

A kinda agree, but basically because both are up-and-comers. but that begin said….match-up wise…it’s a awesome fight!…Gustafsson Via KO early in round 2.

Ugh.
I liked Gustafsson in his last fight, but this fight seems set up for him to lose. He’s going to overcommit to his punches and get taken down at will by Davis. Not a good fight for him at all.
Without pain, without sacrifice, we would have nothing.

Maybe not short term
But I believe Alex needs to fight a wrestler like this sooner rather than later, before he settles in his own style too much. He’ll probably get controlled for 3 rnds, but he’ll learn heaps from it.
I can just hope that Phil won’t be able to finish him, but still dominates him for 14 mins then gets KO’d at the end. Oh, my bias stems from nationality.

Props to Davis for wanting to stay active
but fighting twice in the span of two months, especially for a rookie, seems a bit much. He certainly has the “athleticism” for it though ;)
Don't worry about not being able to see this fight.
We always get to see the swedish fighters fight on the swedish ufc broadcast so even if the fight doesn’t make the broadcast in the US it will quickly make its way to the internets.
this Davis guy sucks
I watched this dude fight for 3 rounds and he is terrible. His stand up was really poor. He stood squared up with his body wide open to front kicks or any body shot, he was looking to shoot the whole time because that is all he can do. He threw open door punches leaving himself exposed constantly and missed about 1,000 submission opportunities on the ground. He looks the part with huge shoulders and all but other than wrestling this guy is aweful on the feet and the ground. If he fights anyone with submission skills or striking skills, he we get killed. Don’t believe the hype this guy sucks hard. He is more one dementional than a cartoon.
Yes, because those 5 career fights leave absolutely no room for improvement at all

And should we mention here that cartoons are two-dimensional? Can you imagine a one-dimensional cartoon? What would that even look like?

wrestlers
I never said he has peaked or would not improve I just said he sucks. It bothers me me to see a guy get a shot in the ufc just because of a wrestling background.
Wrestlers have an unfair advantage when it comes to getting a shot on the big stage because of college wrestling. How many guys are in the ufc right now that got a shot with nothing more than a strong wrestling back ground? A ton. This dude is a prime example, he cannot fight all he knows is wrestling. No other art has a place in the ncaa to compete. The reason we see so many wrestlers in the UFC is because every high school and college in America has a wrestling team, the wrestler pool is larger than any other art in America. How many mauy thia gyms are there? What if you had full contact karate in every middle school, high school and college? Do you know how many more BAD ASS STRIKERS THAT WOULD PRODUCE?
It sux to see yet another double leg ground and pound tool in the ufc. A karate fighter has to go win mma fights to get in ufc a wrestler gets in because he won wrestling matches in college. With such a huge pool to draw from 99% of ufc should be wrestlers but wrestling sucks. If the pools ever get close in size we will see no wrestlers in ufc.
I’m not going to bother with what you actually said, other than the fact that a wrestling team in college is becoming a rarer and rarer site nowadays.

So let's see here...
- You’re pissed that a guy with only 5 fights on his record isn’t the most well-rounded guy around.
- You’re pissed that he used the portion of MMA he knows the most to win his fight.
- You’re pissed that other wrestlers coming to MMA actually use wrestling.
- You’re pissed that more strikers aren’t converting to MMA (as opposed to continuing on with their striking sports).
- Conclusion: wrestling sucks. The reason should be apparent.
Alrighty then…
