Bobby Lashley on HDNet's Inside MMA:

"I want Overeem," Lashley said. "Either let me fight the way I want to -- build up, get a few fights under my belt, work my way up -- or let me fight the champ. If it's fighting the champ I'll fight the champ."

I wasnt really impressed with his last fight.
Strikeforce is in a tough spot, Lashley is obviously not ready for any top guys, but they dont want to risk him losing to an unknown but dangerous fighter like Shane Del Rosario…Maybe they can sign Rolles Gracie and have him fight Lashley…?

Your style's like garbage cans meant to be taken out on a weekly basis

Very interesting. I was wondering why they bothered to show that awful fight. I wonder if it was to reduce his value to other promotions since they probably knew they were going to cut him.

I still like the idea from a business standpoint.

How did I end up on this bandwagon and why does everything say property of Chael Sonnen?

This guy makes absolutely no sense whatsoever

He may not realize it, but he’s basically saying if he’s not fighting cans he wants to have a punchers chance at the title. What the fuck is he talking about?

Blackout612- "Wuts teh UFC?"
Ubernoober- "It like two guy who just stand and swing for fence and try to knock each other shit out it awesome"

At least if he loses to Overeem it won’t completely derail his career the way a lose to a middle of the road nobody would.

I dislike Matt Hughes. Shogun beat him like a dirty horse.

by MonkeyCHops on Feb 13, 2010 2:45 PM EST up reply actions

^^^This. He doesn’t feel he’s ready to face Top 10 opposition, so he thinks that if he’s going to be forced to face a Top 10 guy, it may as well be the Strikeforce or WAMMA Champion.

by madiq on Feb 14, 2010 3:39 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed

Maybe his mindset, or his teams’ mindset is that he started kind of late in MMA as far as his age goes, so he wants to get to the top as soon as possible (I’m just conjecturing, and I’m not trying to defend him). His list of victories is just so weak, and he doesn’t even try to work on his standup against this weak opposition. Cage experience is fine, but he doesn’t even seem to want to try anything else but takedown and ground n pound in his opponent’s guard considering his opposition. I’ve been a fan of his for a while, but he is losing me as a fan.

by chrisbboy82 on Feb 14, 2010 5:46 AM EST up reply actions

I don’t get it.

there is a level of competition between can and the top. that is where he should be fighting.

I don’t think rogers makes sense at this point, but his attitude of complete bum or champion is silly.

He says he wants to work on all aspects of his game, that means he needs to fight someone that he can’t or won’t want to take down immediately, and none of the people that were ever publicly considered to be his opponent in the last fight came close to fitting that definition. When you say you want to be built up slowly but continually fight people that you can take down and finish at will, people will get mad at you.

by Phildo on Feb 13, 2010 2:26 PM EST reply actions

I think he knows at this point that he isn’t anywhere near well-rounded enough to beat even the mid-tier HWs, so what he wants is a bunch of time to train and get better before he faces anyone decent because he’s trying to protect his 0. If he builds up his competition now and fights a Del Rosario he’ll likely lose and a lot of his luster will be gone, but if he fights the champ he’s hoping everyone will just say “Oh well that was the champ, give Bobby some time to develop.”

Without pain, without sacrifice, we would have nothing.

by lowellthehammer on Feb 13, 2010 2:31 PM EST up reply actions

he doesn’t even need to fight rosario, just fight someone just as green as him who he can’t take down at will. Or someone that if he does take them down they have better ground defense than a turtle.

Shit, give him Jason Guida again because he had such a hard time keeping him down.

He needs to be built up. Fighting low level fighters that he can take down and finish in 2 minutes is not building him up, it’s wasting everyone’s time.

by Phildo on Feb 13, 2010 2:35 PM EST up reply actions

its a waste of time, and money for StrikeForce especially.

I'm like PacMan fightin you silly kids... throw ya Hatton the ring, and get knocked outlike Ricky did.
lol.

by Loot on Feb 13, 2010 2:43 PM EST up reply actions

Then who exactly would you suggest?

Strikeforce’s roster doesn’t exactly afford Lashley any such matchups and if he went to the UFC they’d throw him into the deep end immediately.

Without pain, without sacrifice, we would have nothing.

by lowellthehammer on Feb 13, 2010 3:37 PM EST up reply actions

he’s not in the ufc, so that doesn’t matter.
Maybe Del rosario would be ok, but I think he is too big of a jump up in competition if he still thinks he’s “building himself up.”

If he wants to build himself up, that’s fine, fight a wrestler or a jj guy that can keep the fight standing or threaten him on the ground. If he’s building himself up, it doesn’t have to be against someone we’ve all heard of, but it needs to be against someone better than what was on the table last time.

by Phildo on Feb 13, 2010 3:45 PM EST up reply actions

Therein lies the problem.

All of Lashley’s hype goes out the door if he loses to someone that nobody’s ever heard of. That’s why he didn’t want to take the del Rosario fight; too much risk for too little reward. In all honesty finding an appropriate opponent for him seems damn near impossible, because there’s nobody with any name value that’s anywhere near as green as him.

Without pain, without sacrifice, we would have nothing.

by lowellthehammer on Feb 13, 2010 4:08 PM EST up reply actions

Unfortunately, where the heavyweight division is concerned, most of the fighters that we’ve heard of are either (a) Top 15 ranked guys, (b) Past their prime, or © Viewed as cans. The only fighters that get the necessary combination of exposure and seasoning on the Heavyweight level get it in the UFC. Most are either brought along too fast or too slow for fans’ tastes.

Cormier. He’s 1-0, has better wrestling than Lashley…

by dancingChicken on Feb 13, 2010 3:50 PM EST up reply actions

Why would Strikeforce put Cormier in there against Lashley?

by madiq on Feb 13, 2010 7:01 PM EST up reply actions

To see how he would do against a guy he can’t take down. I know it’s stupid but Strikeforce’s roster left me no choice (TBA is already booked).

by dancingChicken on Feb 13, 2010 7:12 PM EST up reply actions

Except, Cormier, I’m sure, is a prospect that they should be shepherding and putting into stylistic tests of his own.

by madiq on Feb 13, 2010 7:32 PM EST up reply actions

I know, that’s why it’s stupid idea.

by dancingChicken on Feb 14, 2010 5:15 AM EST up reply actions

Well, a smarter idea would be to NOT make that fight, and just sign someone else. There are a TON of one-dimensional wrestlers in MMA, just not too many that are well-known.

It was my impression that Strikeforce wanted to bring along Del Rosario slowly, that’s why he was fighting on M-1 Challenge shows while under contract with Strikeforce. Maybe Lashley could use four fights against M-1 level heavyweights…

Maybe I'm weird

but it sounded like he said let me keep fighting to get better or let me fight the best. I say keep fighting tougher competition and earn that top spot. Right now I think Brett Rogers would be a good gauge to see where hes at.

by darkside3744 on Feb 13, 2010 3:06 PM EST reply actions

Agreed

It sounds like he is almost giving them an ultimatium.Beating Wes Sims certainly doesnt qualify You for a tile shot. I think Bret Rogers would be a good mathup for him. Even if he beats Rogers I Still dont think that would be enough to earn a shot above Fedor for the title match.

by #1 piggy on Feb 13, 2010 3:10 PM EST up reply actions

You heard right but I think he needs to fight Shane Del Rosario, Mike Kyle, Mike Whitehead or even Daniel Cormier.

They would be a proper gauges at this point. Lashley still throws his punches like he did/does in Pro Wrestling. He’s throwing with his upper body and not from the hip, and Brett Rogers would MURDER him standing up. ABSOLUTELY MURDER HIM. Lashley looked very “meh” against a bloated Wes Sims.

i couldn’t agree more. I’ll even go so far as to say Rogers destroys Lashley. Everything that Lashley does, Rogers does better with the exception of wrestling, but Rogers has ground skills to more than make up for the wrestling ability of Lashley. I dont think i’ve seen Lashley really throw a punch standing up. does he even train boxing at all?

by BradCr on Feb 14, 2010 3:14 PM EST up reply actions

I wouldnt mind seeing him take on King mo. I think Mo would smash him, even if Mo gives up size. Overeem would knock him back to TNA.

That’s what I did when I watched him on the show last nite, I laughed out loud. He is no where near ready to face top competition . He just looks awkward out there. I didn’t think Sims would be the one to expose him but I am pretty sure if he does take a step up in competition then he might be in for a real ruff night.

I can’t believe no one has mentioned Mark Coleman as an opponent. If the Coleman that fought Couture showed up to fight Lashley it’d be just about the right level of competition for him and it’d be a win against a UFC hall-of-famer.

…Then there’s the part of me that reads what I just read and feels bad for suggesting that Coleman fight again.

I’ve said it in some other places, but the proper choice is “Baby Fedor” Kirill Sidelnikov. He should have come off suspension a few weeks ago.

by madiq on Feb 13, 2010 4:56 PM EST reply actions

Abongo Humprhey is still out there too.

He’s game, can take a punch, and has heart. That’s more than most of Lashley’s opponents can say. Just be careful not to pull his dreads.

by Steve4192 on Feb 13, 2010 7:42 PM EST up reply actions

Bobby Lashley is the same thing now that he was in pro wrestling: a mediocre performer with no personality. Just book him like any other fighter. There is no “Lashley hype.”

by yukkurishiteittene on Feb 13, 2010 5:08 PM EST reply actions

I think the problem here is that Lashley just doesn’t understand that in MMA it’s the promotions not the fighters that book the fights. The matchmaker makes the fights and the fighters either win and go up the ladder or they get cut and try to get back on track on smaller shows. I don’t think anyone really believes Lashley should jump straight up to top competition but if he’s not fighting competitive fights that mean something to Strikeforce’s heavyweight division then what’s the point of being in Strikeforce at all? The idea that Strikeforce should allow Lashley to handpick opponents that don’t threaten his record and pay him big bucks for uncompetitive fights until he feels comfortable is pretty naive on his part. This isn’t sparring on Strikeforce’s dime, it’s a competitive sport. No one twisted his arm to sign with Strikeforce, if he wasn’t ready to step up to that level then he should of just stayed doing regional shows until he was.

by who me on Feb 13, 2010 7:38 PM EST reply actions

LOL@"Strikeforce’s Heavyweight Division." Before they signed Fedor, they had no heavyweight division to speak of. What you don’t understand is that only the UFC and WEC fit your notion of “in MMA it’s the promotions not the fighters that book the fights.” Fighters are offered fights, fighters turn down fights. That’s why every fight requires a separate bout agreement. Now it may be that an exclusive contract binds a fighter more than a single fight contract does, but on a card where Hershel Walker fought Charles Nagy on a main card, and the majority of the undercard fighters were local talent, this notion that “Lashley needs to learn how MMA operates is laughable.”

I understand that you want to see Lashley in relative and enthralling matchups, rather than chart his development, but take solace in the fact that no one is asking you to pay for these fights. Strikeforce is trying to PROMOTE Bobby Lashley’s fights, while his management is trying to MANAGE his career, maximizing his earning potential in the present while building towards the future. When he was a journeyman fighter, people wanted him to be signed in Strikeforce and seasoned there. Now that the “seasoning” isn’t happening as fast as we might like (for the record, I’d like to see him on every Challengers card until the Fall), you want him to go back to “smaller shows.” It’s a competitive sport, but if he actually struggles in a fight, people are convinced that he’s a fraud, not that he needs more training. The Guida fight was less than a year ago. The man has seen 7 rounds in 5 fights. Let’s see him accumulate 10 rounds before he’s getting put in there with Andrei Arlovski. No problem with an Abongo Humphrey or even a Shane Del Rosario, but I can understand Strikeforce not wanting to put two prospects against each other so soon.

by madiq on Feb 13, 2010 8:02 PM EST up reply actions

You don’t have a clue what I do and don’t understand or even what point I was trying to make. Strikeforce is trying to build a promotion with real champions and divisions and that requires that the matchmaker is allowed to do his work. Even the UFC has separate bout agreements and guys are never forced to fight against their will but that is very different than having your manager hand pick your opponents (which is what it sounds like Lashley wants). How many fighters out there say that they will fight anyone that is put in front of them and how many of them whine and moan that people want them to actually fight respectable challenges instead of hapless cans? Good grief he doesn’t need to be fighting top 10 guys or top 20 guys even but he does need to fight some guys who have a freaken pulse or what’s the sense of paying him all that money to fight? Hell you are laughing at Strikeforce’s heavyweight division but apparently as far as Bobby Lashley is concerned they are all too tough for him to face right now.

by who me on Feb 14, 2010 7:51 PM EST up reply actions

Bobby Lashley's fight progression:

Next Fight: Abongo Humprhey, Dan “The Sandman” Christison, Eddie Sanchez, Daniel Puder, Ron Waterman, Ricco Rodriguezor, or Mark Coleman

All of these guys are good enough wrestlers to make him work at it, but none of them have the total grappling or striking game to (hopefully not) completely dominate him. If he wins and looks good move to the next tier. If he loses or looks bad repeat.

Second tier: Scott Barrett, Lavar Johnson, Jeff Monson, Pedro Rizzo, Shane Del Rosario, Sergei Kharitonov, or Tim Sylvia (unless he starts looking real good again, then Tim moves up to the next tier).

Again if he wins and looks good, he moves on to the third tier, otherwise give him another opponent and let him work on his game. And if he gets killed, book him with another first tier fighter.

Third tier: Andrei Arlovski, Brett Rogers, Antonio Silva, Alistair Overeem, or Fabricio Werdum

If he gets a win here, then he’s ready for Fedor.

by John Nash on Feb 13, 2010 8:37 PM EST reply actions   1 recs

I agree, except he probably could use two fights on that first tier regardless of how he looks.
