Oh No: Jose Canseco Went to the Gracie Academy Today

Photo-723358_medium

One of today's interesting tweets came from Nate Diaz, talking about a former Baseball player:

Jose canseco stopped by today.

Jose Canseco (0-1), in hopes of convincing Strikeforce that he is 'legit' now, made well of his promise and came to the Gracie Academy today.

He's still trying to get a fight against former football star Herschel Walker (1-0), and although there is a chance that this would change a few of the fans' outlook on him, it will take more than 'stopping by' and taking a few photos to convince me. Sadly, if Canseco's latest tweet is any indication, Strikeforce might already be considering it:

@mike_keck & I are on our way to meet with cesar gracie, nick diaz and the strikeforce reps. Time to get to work.....

Right after the photo, Nick was heard telling to Conseco to “get your motherfucking hand off my shoulder, bitch.”

Sure glad Lesnar got his shit straightened out.

They don't smile at all,

but maybe since they’re beside Canseco they could’ve laughed a bit.

Hong Man Choi

Anyone here think that a first pro fight with Hong Man Cho is easy, please raise your hands. I don’t care what people call Canseco. He is a warrior. Plain and true. he got in a ring with a giant, and lost. But still, he did it.

I am all for the Canseco/Walker fight. With Mickey Rourke vs Jean Claude Van Damm headlining.

If they hold the fight in Japan, it may go over better. Like a Strikeforce in Japan Dream show.

by wandyman on Feb 12, 2010 2:21 AM EST reply actions

That is true.

Unlike Japan, North American promotions shouldn’t go full-freak show.

They would, at least some of them, were it not for those pesky athletic commissions…

by Monday Morning Martial Artist on Feb 12, 2010 5:38 AM EST up reply actions

I can see no reason an athletic commission would turn down this fight.

Both guys are in their mid 40s, both guys are training with respected camps, and both guys have one pro fight on their records. That is about as even a matchup as you will ever see.

by Steve4192 on Feb 12, 2010 8:05 AM EST up reply actions

Strikeforce better stay far away from the fight if they don’t it could come back and bite them in the end. Kinda hard to pass Fedor as the best fighter in the world when his organization puts on a fight the likes of Walker vs Canseco

It makes Showtime/Strikeforce look more desperate than they think.

I knew that the Walker ratings would open up a can of worms. Here we go. Prepare for a bunch of freakshow fights on Strikeforce cards.

Not much of a surprise with Showtime pulling their share of strings.

This cannot be overlooked. Showtime is the force behind much of the questionable SF moves.

I'm sure I'll be eaten alive for this

but if he’s willing to put in the same effort as Walker, I see absolutely no reason he shouldn’t allowed the same treatment.

by Trysdor on Feb 12, 2010 3:30 AM EST reply actions

that's my point actually.

If he shows that he is truly dedicated, and puts in the same time and effort that Walker did, and if the guys training with him says it’s true, then it wouldn’t be the worst match up in the world.. but as of now, it’s just him stopping by for a photo op. Not enough to convince me at all.

by Anton Tabuena on Feb 12, 2010 3:32 AM EST up reply actions

Maybe I’m giving Jose too much of a benefit of doubt, but the photos don’t say anything about him training or not training. Based on what Nate tweeted, it doesn’t look good, though.

by Monday Morning Martial Artist on Feb 12, 2010 5:40 AM EST up reply actions

The problem is Canseco’s history, especially when put up against Walker’s (which the mainstream media will definitely be doing). Even if Canseco spends 8 hours a day for 6 months training mma for real, he’s still the guy who did steroids, went on the surreal life, and is looked at in general as a jerk who will do anything for money. When you put that up against a guy who is in ridiculous shape from pushups/situps/running, has a history of trying multiple sports, is well-liked by the media, and donated all of his purse to charity.

No matter how serious they both are, Canseco vs walker will be looked at as something that belongs on celebrity boxing

I don’t know why Strikeforce feels like they have to resort to this shit. They have the best HW in the world, and the last few cards they have done sans freakshow fights have been really good. Then they go and ruin it with the same sort of freakshow shit which sunk EliteXC. Dissapointing.

by brad23 on Feb 12, 2010 7:29 AM EST reply actions

SF has not shown any interest in this match up, Jose is trying to make himself relevant, but SF (currently anyhow) is not showing any interest. Besides, what freakshows are you talking about? Herschel/Nagy certainly wasn’t.

Besides, what freakshows are you talking about?

Strikeforce has a long history of freakshows, starting with the main event of their very first show (22-7 Frank Shamrock versus 0-0 Cesar Gracie).

by Steve4192 on Feb 12, 2010 8:13 AM EST up reply actions

I stand corrected, but what other freakshows? I have only been following them as of recently.

Strikeforce at the Dome featured a preview of the Super Hluk Grand Prix when it was main evented by Bob Sapp versus Giant Nortje

by Steve4192 on Feb 12, 2010 8:29 AM EST up reply actions

you can’t count that though, it’s Dream and not SF, they have a relationship with Dream. It’s only natural to show a commercial for it.

by Orcus on Feb 12, 2010 8:32 AM EST up reply actions

I was kidding with the Super Hluk comment.

Strikeforce at the Dome took place on 2/23/2008, long before DREAM ever cooked up their goofy Super Hluk idea. Sapp-Nortje was Strikeforce’s idea of a quality main event for breaking into a new market.

by Steve4192 on Feb 12, 2010 8:37 AM EST up reply actions

haha

damn you, taking advantage of someone who wasn’t watching SF two years ago! but again, I stand corrected (although that’s not really a freakshow IMO, this Jan Nortje dude is 2-6, but we all have different meanings for freakshow and I get what you’re saying).

This will be Strikeforce’s go to fight if everything starts to tank for them. Hardcore’s will hate it but it will draw lots of attention to the promotion. That fight would draw more media coverage than anything Strikeforce could put together with its current roster. Go or bad attention is still attention and people will tune in since it would be on a free card.

by Joselana on Feb 12, 2010 8:21 AM EST reply actions

Hard to read too much into that.

Sad as it is, that fight would be a huge money maker.

I wouldn’t be opposed if Canseco actually trained seriously. I hear he’s a total jerk-off and I’d love to see Herschell pound him out. I also love the looks on Nick and Nate’s faces. Priceless.

by tharv3 on Feb 12, 2010 9:34 AM EST reply actions

it wouldn’t really make that much money. If there was really a market for this, celebrity boxing would still be on tv.

by Phildo on Feb 12, 2010 9:36 AM EST up reply actions

I think this would definatly be a money maker

These are two former pro athletes who did well in the re sport. Not just celbreties who dont have anyathletic ablilty at all. And they are not just boxin,,MMa is much more diffuclt and exicting to watch, so that is why more eyballs will watch this fight.

by #1 piggy on Feb 12, 2010 9:43 AM EST up reply actions

This.

What other legitimate sporting bodies or promotions rely on gimmicky uses of celebrities/other athletes to sell themselves to the masses? There’s nothing stopping Canseco from playing basketball either, you’d just never see the Lakers sign him for the attention he’d bring.

by rabrown on Feb 12, 2010 10:12 AM EST up reply actions

Jose vs Herschel is vastly different than Danny Bonaduce vs Greg Brady. Or is it???

by ultimatefightsource on Feb 12, 2010 10:41 AM EST up reply actions

It is different, but it is closer to that than what Strikeforce has been doing in the past, including walker’s last fight. And it doesn’t matter what it is, it will be percieved as that because canseco is involved..

by Phildo on Feb 12, 2010 10:44 AM EST up reply actions

I know I know we hate freak shows but

How many people will actually watch this with one eye open? I think all of us will no matter what, and not just us probaly hundreds of thousands or milions of people will watch who have never seen the sport before since it might be on CBS if it hapens. So let Walker destroy him early hopefully and bring some new eye balls to the sport in the process. Can u imagine how much the press would eat this up . Now i am ready to hear everyone bash on me, but i said my peace. PL dont give it to me to bad ok, thank u .

by #1 piggy on Feb 12, 2010 9:35 AM EST reply actions

YES!!!!

I must be part Japanese because I want to see this freakshow. Better then kimbo vs shamrock by far imo

by virginiatech on Feb 12, 2010 10:35 AM EST via mobile reply actions

So yes... he is pursuing his small window of fame

By going to Gracies gym. He still hasn’t agreed to what they want in terms of $ up front and training regimen. I am understanding that he is thinking of this in terms of a one fight deal and the $ figure is still widely apart. Cesar and Black aren’t negotiating the terms. He also wants a much easier training regimen. None of the fighters want to train with him. And Strikeforce has no interest in making the fight. Canseco’s reps are talking about pursuing some other smaller promoter that can get it on TV and challenging Walker separately from Strikeforce.

Jose provided me with one of my fondest memories. I was at the cleveland municiple stadium that day he took a fly ball his dome which then went over the fence. Hearing and seeing several thousand (but not tens of thousands, this was in the dark days of cleveland baseball, right before they became a decent team…for a minute) point and laugh in unison was pretty amazing. For that I have to say, thanks jose, but stay the fuck away from mma.
