Oh wow, Kim is a really tough dude before he gets tired. Amir better be prepared, this is a big step up in competition.

He has family in Richmond and Baltimore, so he’s in the area pretty often.

Such a bad fight for Amir. Such a bad fight.

This was my reaction
Kim was going to be stepping up in competition I thought, not going down to Amir.

Well, Amir is a step up in name. This is a really great fight if you are Kim.
Some people think I am a dumb, ugly human being, but really I am a beautiful ape, with exceptional verbal skills.
Not sure it did much for Johny Hendricks. Didn’t he go straight to the undercard after beating Amir?

There’s a show being planned for south korea and Kim is huge there.
Sexyama vs the winner of Wand/Bisping will be on that card as well.
I'm huge in Japan.
South Korea shouldn’t be much different.

They are doing the opposite of protecting Amir. You just don’t see a guy with 4 pro fights against the type of competition Amir has faced anymore. This isn’t just a tough matchup for him. Its the 5th pro fight for a tuf winner. a little shocking, yeah.

Have you met Brock?
I thought the same thing
The thing with the fighters that Amir recently won against in Baroni and Blackburn is that they will stand and trade with Amir, and generally work towards Amir’s strengths. Stun Gun, in just about every fight that I have seen him in, takes his fights to the floor using his judo. I don’t see Amir stopping the judo throws/trips, or doing much from the bottom, and Stun Gun is no slouch in BJJ either.

"...or doing much from the bottom"
cb dollaway may disagree with you on that. oh wait, he didn’t tap (twice). :)
Dolloway is no Kim.
Kim has some of the nastiest ground and pound in the division. He is the rare Asian fighter that has really adapted to the North American style. His elbows from mount are fucking vicious.
The last time I saw Kim his elbows looked fast but no pop or weight in them whatsoever. And I think its gonna take at least a little bit of power to stop Sadollah.
I’m really feeling this one. Will the focus on standup derail the TUF-n00b against the Judoka?
Elbows don’t need a lot of pop in order to cut.
by HarmlessNinja on Feb 12, 2010 12:47 AM EST up reply actions
CB Dollaway has notoriously bad BJJ defense. Kim has shown good BJJ in his guard passing, back taking (from standing position no less), and maintaining top control, and that doesn’t even include his takedown ability. Dollaway and Kim are simply two very different fighters.

Exactly what I was going to say
I love Amir, but I love Stun Gun more.

Amir
I seriously think Amir can take it. His clinch game has gotten better recently, and I think he’d be okay on the ground. The main thing is keep it standing, and focus on leg kicks ala Griffin.
It’s gotten a lot better against the guys he’s been facing, but Kim is much more brutal. Kim with a good cardio game could be a force.

Amir has a good chance
But as a judoka I want Kim to win!!!!
that being said I hope its a competitive match where they both come out looking better at the end.
Well its appears the UFC isn’t in the business of protecting Sadollah. If he pulls this fight off it’ll be somethinge else.
He has a very good shot if he doesn’t get too comfortable in the clinch. If the fight hits the mat, I think we’ll just see Sadollah get punished with elbows en route to a decision loss.
Not that I condone facism or any ism for that matter. Isms are in my opinion, not good. A person shouldn't believe in an ism, he should believe in himself.
I quote John Lennon, "I don't believe in Beatles, I just believe in me". Good point there, after all he was the walrus. I could be the walrus. Wouldn't change the fact I have to bum rides off of people.
This is absolutely a challenge fight to both fighters, but the challenge is different in either case. For Amir, it’s a “step up and show you can hang with the legit fighters in this division” fight. He doesn’t necessarily have to win the fight to meet the challenge, but he has to be able to at least match Kim for some of it and not look out of place. For Kim, I see this as more of a “smoke this young guy who has a good engine and prove that you’re not a walking cardio problem with limited finishing skills”. Kim is under more pressure here, I think, because he’ll be expected to not only win but to do so in dominating fashion. Interesting matchmaking. I like it.
"I'm AJB and I endorse this nut-puncher."
The only real advantage I see is that the Stunner is going to be rusty. Amir’s fought 3 times and been much more active. Either way, good fight.
Perhaps my best years are gone. When there was a chance of happiness. But I wouldn't want them back. Not with the fire in me now. No, I wouldn't want them back.
So do we think that the first 5 fights at 114 on the above list will be the Main Card?
If that was the case, and they showed SPIKE prelims of Simpson-Leben and Escudero-Lauzon, that would be a pretty good card.
I'm not so sure Duffee-Russow will make the main card
They are trying to build Duffee, but he still is only 1-0 and Russow isn’t exactly PPV-worthy himself. I think that one might end up on Spike along with Leben-Simpson, and we’ll see another main card fight added (maybe something involving Rich Franklin, Matt Hammill, Luiz Cane, or Thiago Silva)?
Lauzon-Escudero might end up on the unaired prelims just because they’re both coming of losses, although Escudero could get the TUF winner treatment again also.
by Scott Haber on Feb 11, 2010 10:39 AM EST up reply actions
I actually hope you’re right. Duffee-Russow would be better as a SPIKE prelim, and then the UFC could solidify the main card with a quality 5th bout.

Kim’s got a ton of skills and a ton of talent. He hasn’t really put it all together yet, but the promise of what he could do if he did is pretty damn tantalizing. And I think a lot of us just see Sodallah as not having “seen the elephant” with respect to the crazy stuff that Kim can do. Win or lose, I see Sodallah becoming a better fighter after this fight simply because of the experience of having to match up with someone like Kim.
"I'm AJB and I endorse this nut-puncher."
Stylistically, this isn't a good matchup for Sadollah
It’s the stylistic matchup. In Sadollah’s last two fights, he was paired with Baroni and Blackburn who were both willing to stand and trade with Sadollah, and more or less played to Sadollah’s strengths. Kim isn’t like that, and he will most likely use his judo to take this to the floor and maintain top control, and Kim’s BJJ is pretty good as well. I haven’t seen any type of strong takedown defense from Sadollah especially from a judoka.

But isn’t Sadollah a blackbelt in Sambo?
by WestbergIDFC on Feb 11, 2010 12:05 PM EST up reply actions
Phil Baroni – Huge cardio problems
Brad Blackburn – somewhat concerning cardio problems (fades after the first round..etc)
Kim – Fades a little bit later in fights.
I see the progression here.

I am totally shocked. Seriously guys, get over the Amir hate. A really green Matt Brown basically beat Kim from pillar to post. Amir is going to beat this guy.
It's not hate at all
I think that many people here are fans of Sadollah, but stylistically, this is not a good fight for him. It’s also exaggerating to say that “Brown basically beat Kim from pillar to post” because the fight was actually pretty close and took place mainly on the ground with Kim on top position.

Matt Brown fought his first professional fight while he was drunk. Up until recently, he had very little in the way of actual mix martial arts training.
Yes, Kim won the fight but it was a very close decision I felt. If the Brown that destroyed James Wilkes had a rematch, he would win it.
I think Amir is a step above Matt, and I think he’ll show it when he beats Kim. He probably won’t finish him, but he’ll win.
Great matchmaking
Man, not sure if Amir can win this one though. On the other hand, it’s not exactly clear how he can lose either.
I agree with you, this is a great fight! Stun Gun is a better grappler, but Amir was good off his back two years ago, albeit against wrestlers with poor sub defense, and he looks to have spent his hiatus working really hard. He’s better on his feet than Kim, has the reach advantage, and the guy’s got the heart to take some ground and pound and keep working. I don’t know what his belt in Sambo means in fight terms, but I do think this will be a pretty evenly matched fight with a lot of good technique on display. There’s no place to hide at 170 for more than a fight or two, and while Amir might lose a close decision, I think he can hang with Kim, and has more ways to win this.

Amir pulls of a 3rd round comeback KO
is my prediction. I think Dong’s skills make it a tough match up for just about everyone but I think Amir showed an ability to take a beating on TUF and manage to come back.
Obviously he’s improved since then but there is truth that he will have problems landing strikes in the clinch. That said, I’m not that overly impressed with Kim’s takedowns. He gassed himself out while monkey riding Brown and I would say Amir is a little more tougher to take down and hence Kim will use more of his tank avoiding striking and trying to grind away at Amir.
So 3rd round TKO for Amir or boring decision for Kim.

I’m surprised to see so many people not giving Amir a chance in this, and this is coming from one of Kim’s biggest supporters.
Kim better be prepared to check all those different kicks that Amir throws, he needs to get the fight to the ground immediately to unleash the Dong-Bows. Otherwise he will get picked apart on the feet fairly easily IMO.

IMO
kim’s decision win against brown was crap. brown pushed the pace of that fight; dont know what the judges were thinking
Looks like I’m not the only one not buying into DHK, I saw Matt Brown handle him in their fight and I think Amir will do the same he’s looked really good in his last 2 fights and Kim hasn’t impressed me yet.
MATT BROWN LOST
Why are people so confused about that?
