Andrei Arlovski vs. Fres Oquendo in Exhibition Boxing Match

via Esther Lin/All Elbows

From a press release in my inbox:

Miami, FL -- February 9th, 2010 -- Team Pitbull, Team Oquendo and The Consequences Charity announce today that Top 10 ranked heavyweight boxer Fres Oquendo known as "Fast Fres" will take on UFC former UFC heavyweight champ and Top 10 ranked MMA legend Andrei "The Pitbull" Arlovski in a four round boxing exhibition at the Fontainebleau Miami Beach, Hotel and Resort on Saturday, February 27th.

Once a year, Miami's finest philanthropists, business leaders and the community gather to help raise much needed funds for The Consequences Charity through an annual fund-raising gala known as "The Blacks Annual Gala" hosted by Roy and Lea Black.

...

Both Oquendo and Arlovski are both known for their vicious striking ability and exciting fights. Both top ranked fighters have now decided to fight to help kids stay off the streets. 100% of all money raised from the sale of tickets and auction items goes directly to the charity - a 501(c)3 not-for-profit.

Oquendo has a 31-5 professional record with 20 knockouts.  While some will refer to him as a former world champion he has never held a more prestigious title than the NABO heavyweight strap, a second rate alphabet title at best.  In other fights he has picked up belts like the WBA Fedelatin heavyweight title, and the WBO Latino heavyweight title.  He has, however, been in with some stiff competition in his career.  In 2008 he lost a controversial (read: garbage) decision to James Toney and his level of competition has since dropped aggressively.

One week before the exhibition with Arlovski he will be taking on Demetrice King in an absolute joke of a fight.  King sports a 15-17 record, which makes him someone that has no business fighting a borderline top 15-20 heavyweight.

And herein lies the problem with the bout.  It's a 4 round exhibition for a charity a week after Oquendo fights a full professional bout.  Does anyone think we're actually going to get the best of these men?  I don't.  I figure it's just going to be a glorified sparring session where neither guy looks to put the other to sleep.

Full press release after the jump.

"I am honored to step into the ring with a great fighter like Fres Oquendo. This is going to be an exciting exhibition match but we already know the winner: the children we are helping" says Arlovski.

Oquendo says, "I have seen Arlovski in the ring and in the cage and I am excited to be able to showcase my skills against an MMA legend. Believe me, we are going to go at it for four rounds with the goal that every punch and every blow helps this cause. "

Lea Black, who is putting together her 5th annual event says, "The Gala is one of the top annual charity events on the South Florida social calendar and has drawn top entertainers such as: Alex Rodriguez, Lance Bass, Jencarlos Canela, Maria Conchita Alonso, Lucia Mendez, Dave Matthews, Hulk Hogan, Lennox Lewis, Mike Piazza, Tracy & Alonzo Mourning to name a few. We are very excited for this year’s main event Mr. Arlovski going against Mr. Oquendo.

I'm worried the fight could be so bad it would put me to sleep without even watching the fight.

The Seattle Times linked to my website in June 2009. I wasn't aware of this until January 2010.

He looks like a vampire. He knows this too, thats why he wears the mouthpiece he does.

And females irrationally love vampires. I have no idea why.

Pretty sure porn for women is the same thing as porn for men.

In my experience at least.

Except for the porn thats made for women by women. You could put someone to sleep with that shit.

…the view?

Not that I condone facism or any ism for that matter. Isms are in my opinion, not good. A person shouldn't believe in an ism, he should believe in himself.

Yeah, its going to be a sparring match where neither tries to KO the other. It’s a exhibition match. You don’t suffer brain damage for an exhibition. I didn’t think Fedor and Mousasi were going to rip limbs off during their exhibition either.

Get off your drama llama.

WTF?

What are you talking about with drama?

I’m just saying…let’s not get hung up on “now we’ll get to see where Arlovski is as a boxer” it’s not a serious competitive bout.

I think you’re the one that needs to tone it down a few notches.

Maybe it’s just me, but to me that reads like a whine; its a charity exhibition match. It’s not a problem that it’s not a fully competitive bout; it’s not supposed to be. To me you sounded a bit petulant.

It’s not petulant, it’s saying that the fight is going to be a glorified sparring session.

When the great mega alliance of Affliction and Golden Boy was announced, people were shouting from the rooftops about how one of the things on the long list of benefits was that Arlovski would be able to pursue his dream of becoming a professional boxer, and people were jumping for joy at how he would be able to become a zillionaire and takeover another sport.

Brent is just making sure that people know that this is not step 1 on Arlovski’s super awesome boxing career, it is a sparring session, not a real fight. No one is saying that it’s a problem, he’s just saying hwat it is.

by Phildo on Feb 11, 2010 9:35 AM EST up reply actions

Right. The press release talks about them “going at it” for 4 rounds and a bunch of sites are talking about it being a chance to see how good of a boxer he is and how hard of a fight it is.

It’s not going to be a balls out fight. I have no problem with it at all…but I do want people to understand that it isn’t a competitive match that will prove anything.

Demetrice King is probably the best professional boxer in the world with a losing record.

15 career wins – 4 of those are over guys with 10 or more wins

from 2005-2006 he went 3-10

He rebounded with a stellar 5-0 2007 over guys with a combined record of 28-16-1

Then Raymond Olubowale (one of the guys he beat in 2007) came back to improve his record to 7-2 by beating him in 08 (Olubowale has since gone 1-2)…which came after Michael Grant trounced him earlier in the year.

King’s crowning moment is his last fight which was an upset of Bowie Tupou who was a decent looking prospect. It was a nice win. But excuse me if I’m not impressed with 30-5 multiple time title challenger Oquendo taking on a guy who can’t reliably get wins over nobodies.

17 career losses – 7 to men with 10 or less wins

That may well be true, but it’s a terrible fight for Oquendo anyway.

When is Arlovski fighting in MMA again?

It’s cool that Arlovski is doing this, but I still feel that he can be a top Heavyweight in MMA. As far as striking is concerned, (but not striking defense unfortunately), Arlovski is one of the better strikers in Heavyweight. His takedown defense is good as well, and his record is very good with wins over some tough guys (and some tough losses as well though).

by chrisbboy82 on Feb 11, 2010 1:40 AM EST reply actions

I think Arlovski should pick a career here. If he wants to do well in boxing, he should fight an actual fight with a lesser known guy, rather than sparring with a guy who could probably kill him.

by TLow on Feb 11, 2010 2:35 AM EST reply actions

What a poorly written press release. That’s about the extent of my thoughts on the matter. Go Arlovski.

by HarmlessNinja on Feb 11, 2010 7:47 AM EST reply actions

The overall tone of this article seemed rather critical given that this is just an exhibition, it’s for charity and Arlovski hardly has any pro-boxing ring time. I guess what you’re doing is preemptively telling people to calm down in case Arlovski happens to win, which i guess is OK.

by The Darkness on Feb 11, 2010 10:53 AM EST reply actions

Well…if he looks good that’ll be neat. And if this were an actual non-exhibition I’d have a problem with his debut being against Oquendo.

I guess I wanted to A) point out that Oquendo is NOT a top 10 heavyweight. B) that this isn’t going to be meaningful in telling us where Andrei’s boxing is and C) calm down some of the talk about what this all means.

I should add

D) they’re sounding like they want to charge people to watch the fight online. Now I’ll probably pay to watch it (as long as the money goes to the charity), but I think people should be aware what they’re being asked to pay for.
