The UFC needs to re-evaluate how they handle situations like this

This is one example of how the UFC handles matters in a way that is not consistent with a major sport. Instead of leaking information that Coleman had been cut, they should have held a press conference and allowed him to announce his retirement from the sport. Dana could have said some nice words about Mark being a pioneer and then offered him a spot in the UFC in some other capacity. This would have played well on sports news shows, allowed them to show highlights of his career etc.

"For some reason Dana White doesn't like me, and I don't care enough to find out why. So he can go pound sand up his ass as far as I'm concerned."

But Mark said he wasnt done

If he is actually gonna retire then I can see giving him the press conference to announce his retirement but who knows he may be headed for Strikeforce or Dream or just go the Dan Severn route.

As for “playing well” on sports news shows I think the only people that would cover a retiremnet press conference are sites like BE, etc.. maybe ESPN.com but there is no way Mark Colemna’s retirement would’ve been shown on sportscenter or any other big shows.

by bigdmmafan on Feb 10, 2010 3:00 PM EST up reply actions

I know Mark said he wasn’t done after the fight. I am assuming his stance has changed since he has been cut. I am hoping they at least gave him the opportunity to go out on a high note. As far as no mainstream news source covering it, you may be entirely correct, but we don’t know because something like that has never been done by the UFC. It may not have made sportscenter but I am sure it would have made the front page of their website. Anyway, that was just my 2 cents.

Sadly, I don’t think him retiring is the right assumption.

by HarmlessNinja on Feb 10, 2010 3:11 PM EST up reply actions

It was to be expected

If this is confirmed, it was a given. Coleman looks like a shell of the fighter he used to be, while Couture appears to be ageless.

by hellig on Feb 10, 2010 1:05 PM EST reply actions

my question is, why did they bring him back in the first place? same for trigg.

so Strikeforce couldn’t sign them

But I’ll beleive this one because there isn’t any reason to keep him. Unless that was the end of his contract and he didn’t give them a stellar performance for them to resign.

by Trysdor on Feb 10, 2010 1:44 PM EST up reply actions

Coleman isn’t much of a draw, has no interesting fights left (I guess maybe Tito?), looked extremely old (as in not entertaining to see a guy that age get beat up) and makes much much more than the younger fighters.

Giving Shogun his props. I had the fight 48-47 Machida but Shogun put up a monumental performance and I am honored to have seen it in person.

by Day Man on Feb 10, 2010 1:51 PM EST up reply actions

Coleman as a fighter is a liability for the UFC at this point; he’s bad optics. He looks visibly like an old man, labouring to move around, getting punched repeatedly, and giving the distinct impression that he’s on the edge of a coronary episode. If Coleman does not want to stop fighting, I (and everyone else) has to accept his choice, but the UFC is smart (and, in a way, compassionate) in stating very clearly that they will not be party to that sort of exhibition.

by MicahW on Feb 10, 2010 2:19 PM EST up reply actions

assuming this is true...

definitely would’ve preferred it if they gave him a little longer to think things over and possibly announce his retirement publicly, rather than just abruptly cut him. the guy deserves that, especially since stupid tito interrupted him the other night.

though, i suppose more things could have gone on behind the scenes that we didn’t know about. and coleman’s “i’ll be back…” or whatever he said during his post fight interview, would lead me to believe he wants to keep fighting. perhaps he does, and the ufc just doesn’t want any part of that.

either way, dana was right when he said the guy has nothing left to prove, so i hope he does ‘hang em up’ as they say

by woooburn on Feb 10, 2010 1:24 PM EST reply actions

We don’t know what went on at this point, maybe Mark made it clear he wasn’t going to retire and wants to fight somewhere else so they just cut him free to do that. The UFC may of sat on his contract for a year or so but really would that of been fair to Coleman if he still wants to fight?

by who me on Feb 11, 2010 4:14 AM EST up reply actions

End of the road fighters in general...

woodburn, I’m in total agreement with you. What risk would the UFC be taking by giving say Coleman (or even Frank Trigg for sake of argument) some time to think things over, even if the UFC planned on cutting them regardless. I can see the haste if the fighter doesn’t plan on retiring and wants to get the ball rolling with another organization of courese. But if there is a sense that that fighter may truly retire from the sport, why not give them time to mull things over, announce their retirement from the sport, and leave the sport as a UFC fighter with some dignity?

by Vulture860 on Feb 10, 2010 1:30 PM EST reply actions

Not surprising, really. Dana said he was probably done after the fight.

Only thing see him coming back for is to get murdered by Tito Ortiz. At 250k a fight, Ortiz needs a win pretty badly, and if he doesn’t get it against Liddell they could give him Coleman, and not sell is as a cakewalk for Tito but as a “bad blood” kind of match.

by TLow on Feb 10, 2010 1:57 PM EST reply actions

How can you cut a UFC HOF-er???

MAYBE they’d justify it because of his use of the F word during his post-fight interview. Otherwise, you’d just pay him off, right?

by MMAInFeRioRiTy on Feb 10, 2010 2:19 PM EST reply actions

When said HOF isn’t integral to bringing in dollars and seems to be on his last leg, I can see why.

If Derek Jeter clubbed a baby seal on earth day while wearing a mink coat and crocodile skin boots while burning tires on an iceberg, the reaction would be "Its OK Derek, you’re a Yankee." -First mammal to wear pants

Being in a HOF normally means that you have left the sport, the odd part for him (and Randy)is that they are in a hall of fame but are still fighting.

by who me on Feb 11, 2010 4:12 AM EST up reply actions

This is why the MMA world needs Strikeforce.

At least guys like Coleman( who is a legend in this sport) has another place he can possibly go to make a descent paycheck.

by Tim Burke on Feb 10, 2010 3:01 PM EST reply actions

Think your head not with your MMA Heart

Is Coleman a legend? No doubt. Is he still able to compete at the elite levels of competition? Negative. The argument of “A Legend deserves another match” could lead to a fighter getting seriously hurt. Coleman almost went the distance with an injured and out of shape Shogun, got outclassed by Randy Couture, and beat Stephan Bonnar (who let’s face it, doesn’t belong in the UFC). He’s past his prime. He’ll always be the godfather of GnP, but he has no business being in the UFC at this point.

by who me on Feb 11, 2010 4:10 AM EST up reply actions

I think this sucks. He deserves better.

At least talk to him first and let him ‘retire’… that is… unless he HONESTLY is thinking about still fighting, which I doubt (and yes I know what he said after he got choked out on Saturday). If so though, I would like to see him in Strikeforce just to boost their recognition if nothing else.

by TDITZ on Feb 10, 2010 3:17 PM EST reply actions

He will definitely fight again. His name is big enough to get him a solid pay day and hes fighting to support his family.

Giving Shogun his props. I had the fight 48-47 Machida but Shogun put up a monumental performance and I am honored to have seen it in person.

DOESN'T MAKE THE UFC LOOK GOOD

How can you cut a guy after he was just in your main event? Probably because he shouldn’t have been there in the first place. At least save face and keep him around for one more fight so you don’t look like you just had a worthless ppv headliner. This is ugly no matter how you look at it.

by CROOKS on Feb 10, 2010 4:55 PM EST reply actions

by kenpoboy67 on Feb 10, 2010 6:38 PM EST up reply actions

Actually the UFC did

Coleman and his family a huge favor by signing him and giving him pay days. It was a sign of great respect imo. The UFC didn’t need Coleman, but they paid him a lot for his name.

by Riney on Feb 10, 2010 9:52 PM EST up reply actions

Yea this is a guy who didn’t even fight between 2006 and 2009 that the UFC brought back. They didn’t need him at all, they were giving a legend another chance. Hell I don’t see where this would make the UFC look bad at all as the vast majority of casual fans won’t even notice that he is gone. The guy isn’t going to retire(even though he should), hell me may of asked for an out so he could go fight somewhere else for all we know.

by who me on Feb 11, 2010 4:09 AM EST up reply actions

sure they did him a "favor"

by giving him a paycheck even though he was set up to fail. His first fight was supposed to be Lesnar but he got hurt. He has looked like crap in almost every fight but somehow Randy is now a top 5 LHW with that last win according to Dana, does that make any sense? I just don’t like the UFC’s logic sometimes. Man I sound like a hater but just calling it like I see it.

by CROOKS on Feb 11, 2010 2:23 PM EST up reply actions

I agree with you

about Couture, I have not been impressed with him in years. But Colemans days were numbered in the UFC the second he signed the contract.

by Riney on Feb 11, 2010 3:02 PM EST up reply actions

Does Coleman still have any clout in Japan? I hear Yoshida is looking for an opponent…

by Ubernoober on Feb 10, 2010 7:26 PM EST reply actions

I wish this was a joke.

Coleman will sign with Strikeforce, fight Nagy then get a title shot. Ubereem will actually agree to this fight, kill Coleman, then go back to K-1. And Overeem still will have not beat anyone worth a shit in 3 years.

by Riney on Feb 10, 2010 9:54 PM EST up reply actions

Coleman isn’t cut, his contract is just playing possum.

Not that I condone facism or any ism for that matter. Isms are in my opinion, not good. A person shouldn't believe in an ism, he should believe in himself.

I quote John Lennon, "I don't believe in Beatles, I just believe in me". Good point there, after all he was the walrus. I could be the walrus. Wouldn't change the fact I have to bum rides off of people.
