Thiago Alves talks Jon Fitch:
"I'm really excited; I'm training really really hard. I can't wait to get in there and let it loose and erase that last loss."
"My mistakes won't happen again, I promise you that. I think about those fights every day. I have a mission every time I lose to somebody, I need to get the rematch, the revenge back. So I got Fitch now, next hopefully will be GSP again.
"To key to beat Fitch is, I have to be faster than him and I have to impose my will, do what I'm supposed to do and I'll try to knock him out and take him out every way in the fight.
"(A GSP rematch) is up to the UFC management, but I think if you're going to look at the rankings, there's nobody above us. So I think it should happen."

This should be a very short night for Alves. He has improved by leaps & bounds since their first fight, while Fitch remains the same grind-it-out, no finishing guy. I just don’t see how Three rounds go by without Alves landing something that puts Fitch to sleep.

Fitch has to stop fighting like an inferior Josh Koscheck with a worse gameplan. At least when Kos “forgets how to wrestle” he still has good KO power to try and rely on. Fitch doesn’t; he needs to work a game plan of wearing people down, then going for the finish. He either gets one or the other: he either wears them down but does nothing with it (which often leaves him open to getting caught despite his hard work), or he goes for the finish standing (and gets smacked around way more than he should). I think Fitch has the work ethic and the skills to beat Alves, but I have lost any confidence that he’ll use them intelligently.
"I'm AJB and I endorse this nut-puncher."
I think Alves takes this. Fitch took a decent amount of damage on the feet last time out.
However, I’d rather see Alves fight Paul Daley than GSP just yet.
Agreed on all accounts.
I like Jon Fitch, and think he’s a great WW. Top 3 in the world. But I don’t think his skillset at this point in time can beat Alves’ current skillset.
Even in defeat, Alves showed great skill and toughness against GSP, as well as great conditioning. He’s nearly impossible to keep on the mat, if you can even get him there. GSP took him down like no other fighter has. What happens in the standup with other fighters not as good as GSP when they can’t take Alves down? IMO, it’s a bad night for them.
I also think it’s too early for Alves to get a GSP rematch even if/when he beats Fitch, so a fight vs. Paulo Thiago or Daley would be great (although I think the UFC gives Daley a shot at GSP right away if he beats Koscheck in May).

You hit it on the button. Just like Alves will do with Fitch.

I'll take Alves on this one
Thiago was able to stuff an explosive, well-set upped takedown or two from GSP just with sheer strength, imagine what he can do to Fitch’s.
But there’s still a good chance that this will be another lay n pray victory for Fitch.
