Winner of Michael Bisping vs. Wanderlei Silva Expected to Face Yoshihiro Akiyama

According to fightersonlymagazine.co.uk:
Should Michael Bisping get past Wanderlei Silva at UFC 110, Fighters Only has been told, he will most likely face Yoshihiro Akiyama in his next fight.

Akiyama is also likely to be on the menu for Wanderlei should he get past Bisping. ... According to a Las Vegas source, the UFC would like to make Wand-Akiyama on a card to be staged in Japan.

... No news yet on who is being considered for the loser of Wanderlei-Bisping, although Nate Marquardt could be a possibility.

yes

That makes sense. I really want to see Wanderlie beat bisping and akiyama to make a splash in the 185 division. If he does that by way of ko or tko in both I could see him fight for the title

"In the UFC anything can happen"

Thats what they keep telling me. But I predict Judo throw into submission.

Or just the battering of Akiyama. In the menatime, lets hope Silva gets back to his own ways.

I see Bisping defeating Wandy, as much as it saddens me

by Roujam on Feb 10, 2010 9:41 AM EST reply actions

I'd have to agree

As much as I’d like to see Wand do what Hendo did to Bisping, I haven’t seen much from Wandy in the past couple of years to make me think that he will take this. That being said, this is a nice little MW tourney being set up.

Plus it’s Wands first cut to 185, you don’t know how much power that is going to sap out of him. Where as Bisping looked in good form in his last fight so he will becoming into this with some momentum.

Although you could argue that Wandy has something to prove dropping down.

by Roujam on Feb 10, 2010 9:52 AM EST up reply actions

It's his first cut to 185...

But he’s only cutting from 195, and has had like 8 months to do it properly.

A 10 lb cut over 8 months for a serious trainer like Wandy shouldn’t even really come into the equation.

Has his walking weight been noted recently as 195? I think you may be confused, due to his fight with Franklin. He had to cut to 195, and the cut was a drastic one. Really hard on him. Of course, you might know something I’ve missed…

Wand said that he was dropping some muscles since fight with Franklin.

by dancingChicken on Feb 11, 2010 6:52 AM EST up reply actions

Yeah, Silva had said the fight with Franklin at the catch weight...

Was to transition down to 185, it only makes sense that if he was transitioning down to a perm stay at 185 that he’d be making a controlled drop from around 195, not trying to cut 30+lbs every time as an older guy.

He will have a big technical striking and reach advantage. He will pick Wandy apart standing unless Wandy can close the distance and get in his big looping hook range.

Giving Shogun his props. I had the fight 48-47 Machida but Shogun put up a monumental performance and I am honored to have seen it in person.

I had Akiyama, but it was definitely close. If damage was a critera, Belcher would have taken it. Part of me thinks the judges may have been punishing him for that horrible Johnny Cash tattoo.

That is a really long layoff for Aikyama. I was hoping to see him against Maia, but this will be a fun fight as well. I’m actually more excited to hear about a potential card in the Japan this year, that is going to real big for UFC.

most likely would be a record attendance if they play thier cards right. It would funny to see DREAM counter promote tho lol

You're right...they are on different levels.

Wandy has 1 win in his last 5 fights, and Bisping has 1 loss in his last 5 fights.

by Scott Haber on Feb 10, 2010 12:07 PM EST up reply actions

They are on different levels of opposition too...

Wandy has fought Hendo, Lidelll, Jardine, Rampage, Franklin for this last 5.

Bisbing has fought a murderers row of McCarthy, Day, Leben, Hendo, and Kang.

There is an absolutely massive difference in level of opposition here.

I’d also say that Wandy looked more impressive in his losses to Franklin and Lidell than Bisbing looked in some of his wins.

Considering all the word is Bisbing working on power punching with Rampage...

I fully expect to see him try to use it to some extent and end up backed into the cage and eating knees, and as shown in Vera vs Couture, they’ll pretty much never break up a clinch as long as there is some perception of action happening.

I simply don’t see Bisbing winning this fight any way but a decision, and having seen him literally walk into while you can hear his corner telling him not to, I don’t have much faith in him actually making it through three rounds, let alone winning a decision in a questionable judging enviroment that isn’t favoring him.

Except when Bisbing gets absolutely tooled...

By Hendo who is the only top competition he’s fought. Let’s put it this way, who do you think looked better against Hendo? Bisbing or Silva?

Like I said, Silva has looked better in close losses than Bisbing has looked in most of his wins, hell even the win that gives him some small amount of respect against Kang almost ended in the first.

I guess...

The way I look at it is that it’s not so much “earn” as “become a promotable opponent so we can actually have a fight that Japanese people care about”.

It’s sad to think that at one point Akiyama was considered top 10 and now after looking so unimpressive in his first fight, he doesn’t really have a winnable fight at middleweight.

by Matthew Roth on Feb 10, 2010 12:07 PM EST up reply actions

Akiyama beat Belcher, who is a much more dangerous striker than Bisping. I highly doubt he’d lose badly to the Count.

Wanderlei is hard to guage now. He looked slow and worn down fighting at 195. No telling if he’s nearly shot as a fighter overall, or if he can perform better at 185.

by Hardcharger on Feb 10, 2010 12:21 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah it’s hard to say. Is he really shot or is he about to pull a Shogun?

by HarmlessNinja on Feb 10, 2010 1:25 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed

I don’t get why Akiyama is a “prize” for the winner of this fight.

I’d rather see Akiyama fight sooner, and preferably against Marquardt, rather than waiting for the outcome of Wandy-Bisping.

by Scott Haber on Feb 10, 2010 12:10 PM EST up reply actions

Akiyama????

Doesn’t ANYONE else belive that Belcher BEAT Akiyama? Akiyama scored some “points”, but Belcher did as well, and did the most DAMAGE. Funny how we forget about this SHITIYAMA dude. Remember when he fought Sakuraba and was DQ’d for being GREASED? He’s a f’n cheat, and I don’t like the way the UFC is “touting” him as being so great. He knoced out Dennis Kang, and got knocked out by Misaki.
I am sorry, but I cannot glory this guy, and to promote a cheat is sinful.

by ryukyublack on Feb 10, 2010 11:42 AM EST reply actions

- Akiyama/Belcher was close. I could see the decision going either way.

- Everyone remembers the Saku fight. It’s part of the reason he was such a big draw for DREAM.

- The UFC isn’t touting him as great. They’re using him to break into a market that the purchase of PRIDE was supposed to help with.

I do. But then, my love for Akiyama is bulletproof.

As for why the UFC is promoting him so much, it makes perfect business sense. Akiyama is a fucking star overseas. And that’s not my fanboy BS either. The UFC is looking to use Akiyama to help… penetrate… the Japanese market.

Maia vs Bisping should happen regardless of what happens on this fight – This is will be a great fight, with Bisping not having KO power.

Finally

We at last get to hear something about Sexyama. I had to resort to google translating his blog in the hopes of gleaning some sliver of information regarding his next fight. It was an . . . odd experience, to say the least. I should have paid more attention during those Japanese classes.

Is the UFC seriously going to put a card in Japan soon, or at least planning to?

With all the obstacles that the UFC has had trying to get into Japan, I have to wonder if they’ll be able to put a card in Japan. This makes sense in why Akiyama hasn’t fought in a while, but I have a hard time seeing the UFC getting into Japan.
