Quote of the Day: Joe Rogan Comments on Strikeforce: Miami

"I was just thinking about how f**king fun it is to watch shows when you don't have to commentate. I love working for the UFC, and the job is a complete and total honor, and one of the coolest jobs on the planet, but it's so much f**king fun to watch fights when you don't have to talk all the time. After all these years of being an MMA fan, it's still just as exciting."

"Nick Diaz is a f**king MONSTER. That dude just gets better with every performance, and he was in some rare air last night. Brutal body shots, and relentless striking. I thought it was f**king awesome."

"The Lawler fight was insane. That was one of the greatest, come from behind KO's ever, and the fact that he only landed 3 punches makes the story perfect. That shit was MMA history. People will be talking about that KO for decades."

-- Joe Rogan says he loves watching other fight shows.

One of my favorite moments while watching an mma event is when one of my buddies friends made a comment about Joe Rogan not knowing what he was talking about and me getting to put him in his place in front of everyone.

by b2tharad on Feb 1, 2010 9:38 PM EST reply actions

I think the hate comes from his conspiracy theories/psychadelic trip talk. I find it entertaining as well as his commentary/standup.

by kanodogg on Feb 1, 2010 11:11 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

You're gettng confused

There’s the play by play announcer, which is Goldberg, who like other some announcers in other sports, often doesn’t have a clue. Rogan is the color commentator, who is supposed to be the knowledgeable one. Color commentators are usually former coaches or players, so they almost always know the sport, so to say that Rogan is more knowledgeable than other guys in his spot is inaccurate.

by Pantherhare on Feb 2, 2010 1:50 AM EST up reply actions

You're getting presumptuous

True, color guys are often former players or coaches, but they’re not always able to bring that knowledge out on a live telecast, nor are they necessarily current on their knowledge. Sometimes they coast on what happened back in their day.

Knowledge + ability to articulate on camera = quality announcing. And I think Rogan has that.

You know, the bar is sooooo low in sports announcing. Half the time I’m just delighted that Rogan says some of the things me and my friends are discussing. There are so many times in an NFL or NBA game where what seems like the obvious thing to discuss goes right by the announcing team – both the play-by-play and color guy.

by Django Z on Feb 2, 2010 2:20 AM EST up reply actions

is that supposed to be a compliment?

if joe regularly said things like “fighter a has been dominating this fight,” and then literally thirty second later said “fighter a hasn’t been able to do a single thing in this fight.” then i’d agree with you. walton is a terrible announcer with a memory as long as a gnats. i appreciate he’s a fan of the game, but his schizo commentary is painful to listen to.

by K Krush on Feb 2, 2010 9:10 AM EST up reply actions

Bill Walton is so over-the-top

I find it hard not to appreciate him. I never thought I’d say it, but I very much miss his commentary.

by woomikee on Feb 2, 2010 11:49 AM EST up reply actions

Haha, no

Bill Walton single handedly pushed me away from Basketball. I muted him most often. But there was a sort of perverse pleasure in hating him, and a strange part of me miss him like woomikee says. But no Walton was not good. He’s one of the all-time worst. But he was soooo colourful and not afraid to sound stupid, there was something oddly entertaining about him. But goodness I don’t want him back.

by Dooda on Feb 2, 2010 4:34 PM EST up reply actions

That said, I was just being ironic. I love Rogan.

by Dooda on Feb 2, 2010 4:35 PM EST up reply actions

another point joe doesn’t get credit for is that he does an amazing job of balancing fair commentary and being a company man. if he’s going on about a fighter, it’s because joe thinks highly of that fighter, not because he’s been ordered to play that fighter up. listening to elitexc was the worst in that aspect, they treated every match like it was the main event of a wrestlemania, and had nowhere to go when the action didn’t match their enthusiasm.

Strikeforce put off a nice show, call me paranoid but after that dude in pride got his face blown off i don’t think the fighters should be walking down close to pyro. This isnt a hater comment or anything on strikeforce because they have great production value and know how to run the show. Just dont like the pyro stuff. Also get rid of shamrock and mauro please.

by Red Dragons on Feb 1, 2010 9:58 PM EST reply actions

And Shamrock sucks so much..

I hate it so much when he belittles the fighters. Is he jealous? I don’t see any logic behind that. That’s one of the reason why UFC commentary is far superior.

by lavis on Feb 1, 2010 10:23 PM EST reply actions

unfortunately, i think that for the same reasons that Joe Rogan is awesome, Frank Shamrock sucks. I think it’s just who he is coming thru on camera. It’s just Frank being Frank, and unfortunately for Frank, a little bit of Frank goes a long way. By the time the introductions of the show are over, I’m blinded by his braces, and wishing i could selectively mute people but still hear the action. Joe is awesome because the person that comes across on camera is the person that i think he is, a cool, funny, superfan who not only loves the sport, but has trained for years with many of its stars. Frank just comes across as a douche, because i think that’s who Frank is and there’s just no hiding it

Mir does tend to get fixated on the more technical fighter in a bout.

And there is not surer way to lose a bout then to have Mir either predict your victory pre-fight or become fixated on your technical superiority during the fight.

I miss having Randy give commentary. He’s a bit stiff, but that’s probably because he doesn’t get a lot of practice. But he’s SO knowledgable, and can give such awesome annecdotes to illustrate his points (sort of like Bas, but more cogent), and I remember a couple of fights where he literally called exactly what was about to happen about 20 seconds in advance.

Kenny seems like a good complimentary guy. I feel like that group would have good chemistry. Rogan would call the action and ask Kenny particular questions to involve him, Schiavello would yes “GOODNIGHT IRENE” instead of having to hear Goldberg’s bullshit. I’d dig it.

I disagree.

The UFC announcing teams was at it’s peak on those rare occassions where Randy sat in with Goldy & Rogan. The three man booth works fine as long as the three personalities gel. You needs to have a mix of personalities that can coexist. Goldy, Rogan & Randy did that very well.

I think adding a laid back technical analyst, whether it be Randy, Mir, Florian, or someone else, helps the UFC broadcast.

by Steve4192 on Feb 2, 2010 8:46 AM EST up reply actions

i always wondered if the Mauro/Bas chemistry was real, or they were narrating over already taped events and were working from a script. I’ve never seen a pride event live, so i don’t know if they were who actually announced the events live, or if it was just something done for when the events were broadcast on American TV, kinda like Iron Chef

by BradCr on Feb 1, 2010 11:03 PM EST reply actions

No, they did them live. There was a coule of times when someone else would actually replace Bas in the booth because he was cornering a fighter.

by thetakeover on Feb 1, 2010 11:18 PM EST reply actions

I think part of the problem with the SF commentary is that they don’t work as a team. Say what you will about Rogan and Goldie, but the fact that they’ve worked together so many times helps them out a lot, and they at least get along well and do their job a little bit better over time, but these guys it’s just weird.

Ranallo is overselling everything, shamrock is overselling himself (which no body cares about) and i have no idea what Quadros is doing. Then they go on CBS and want Gus Johnson to do the play by play, but still have Ranallo there with no real job description, and shamrock being shamrock.

Ways to improve, pick a team, and let them do all the shows. Don’t bring in Gus just for CBS shows, don’t switch to militetch for challengers, pick a 2 or 3 man booth, let them work together all the time, and hope they get better.

Step 2, put one of those electric dog collars on ranallo and electrocute him whenever he starts going off the rails.

Step 3, they just have to get rid of shamrock. He only cares about himself. It was bad in the past when they asked him to score the rounds and he just said he doesn’t score the rounds (then for some reason they asked him again later in the card), then he “no-sold” it when they asked him how hard cung le kicks, and he did it again this weekend when they asked him how hard diaz punches. It wasn’t even like the fights with Cung and Diaz were controversial, he got beaten so badly that there’s no reasonable person would want to see them again. If he can’t admit that he lost and then promote those fighters (or even objectively analyze their fights) he shouldn’t be in the booth when they fight. He’s not analyzing, he’s not promoting the brand, he’s promoting himself, it’s dumb for SF or Showtime or whoever the fuck is paying the bills to pay him to do that.

by Phildo on Feb 1, 2010 11:22 PM EST up reply actions

I agree with a lot of your rambling points. I think Gus could be a great play by play announcer if he got the hours in. He has a better understanding of cadience and pacing than anyone else in the mma world. Unfortunately his depth of knowledge is very shallow, and being a CBS sports guy he’ll never work enough cards to get versed in the subject. I believe StrikeForce’s best option would be to make sure Bob Sheridan is their man behind the mike. His 25+ years calling fights has made him much more comfortable calling the action than any other mma commentator. In addition he brings a level of respectability. I could see some ShoBox fans checking out a StrikeForc show only because he’s calling it.
As for Shamrock, indeed he’s got to go. Just give Pat the fulltime duties as colorman. Or at least let the two fight for it in May.

Yeah, I remember after the whole “Fedor exposed” thing I thought Rogan was kind of being a dick, but that’s not really true in the end.
