STFU Josh Koscheck!!
"You either have to have a character or just be a plain bad-ass fighter, but sometimes being a bad-ass fighter isn't enough," Koscheck offers earnestly. "If you look at the WWE, they've done it for years -- building characters and storylines -- and I think that's a big part of our sport."
I am not trying to make a insightful well thought out fanpost here. Look at my previous fanposts and comments and you will see that I am an eternal noob always putting my foot into my mouth. MMA is a sport. I don’t need characters and story lines to be fabricated in order to enjoy the sport of MMA. As a fan of MMA I find Josh Koscheck's recent comments insulting. MMA is not about acting or "playing a part". The sport of MMA is entertaining in and of itself.
Entertaining: Courage, Technique, Positional Awareness, KO Power, and Superior Conditioning
Insulting: Trash Talk, False Persona, Exaggerated Dislike between Fighters, and Generalizations Regarding Race

When your sport is dependent on fans to buy payperviews to watch you fight
you better do something to get casual fan interest up unless you dont like getting bigger paychecks

Exactly.
Kos is playing the obvious heel role, and it seems to be working beautifully.
It never ceases to amaze me how gullible people (especially MMA fans) are; to be fooled into taking reality TV seriously is beyond stupidity.

Jesus
That is exactly what I find insulting about it. Rogan said this during the fight, “Josh isn’t really an asshole, he is actually a nice guy. He was just trying to sell the fight.” Fuck that! You hit the nail on the head when you comment about how gullible and easily fooled fans are. But what if your not that gullible and easily fooled? It reminds me of Clinton’s “didn’t inhale” excuse. Most of the kids here have no memory of this but it was fucking insulting. Worse yet it worked! Or it showed that people didn’t give a shit if he smoked marijuana or not. You’re probably right about Koscheck’s antics working beatifully. I would like to think that GSP is a huge draw because he is flat out amazing to watch but sadly, it probably was the false persona put forth by Koscheck on the show. I just think it’s dangerous ground as far as the sport of MMA being taken seriously.

YOU don't need storylines.
The vast, vast majority of the sports watching public DO. A sport with few fans is a sport that will not last very long.
Forget it Donny. You're out of your element.
I don't need "fabricated" storylines.
Fabricate: (verb) formed or conceived by the imagination; “a fabricated excuse for his absence”; “a fancied wrong”; “a fictional character”

1-don’t need fabricated storylines, such as fighter X banging Fighter Y’s ex, who is also a valet, etc…wooooooo!!!!!!!
2-Absolutely need characters, ie annoying douchebag villain fighter (Kos) against squeeky clean all-american fighter (GSP…oh wait).
Who was boxing’s “Greatest”? Not only a guy built on amazing skill, but a polarizing character who was equally beloved and hated. And I’m not talking about boxing hallof famer, Sylvester Stallone.
Why does teh NFL spend 2 weeks building storylines and players before the Super Bowl? Same thing, people are more interested in the intrigue and drama associated with an event, than the pure competition of it.

I considered Ali when I was writing this post. As a kid I loved Ali’s trash talk. I was fascinated by his personality and intensity. I am incapable of disliking Ali now. Ali didn’t appear to be exaggerating his personality though. I don’t think he was faking it. He seems like a guy who was always cracking jokes and busting people’s balls. It’s the way Koscheck and others explain that they are saying the things they are and acting the way they do as some sort of way to sell tickets that I find insulting. That being said, I probably wouldn’t approve of Ali’s boasting and trash talk if he were competing in MMA today. I guess I am grumpier about this stuff now that I am not a kid anymore. That’s kinda sad.
"Stop smiling you are about to be punched in the face !"
Ali picked up the trash talking from Gorgeous George Wagner – the biggest pro wrestler of his era. In fact he personally recommended it as a means to sell tickets to a young Cassius Clay.

I remember watching the Olympics one year, and I distinctly remember the commentators talk about some backstories of some of the athletes and small rivalries between the participants. The point is that even at this high level of athletic competition being the Olympics, they felt the need to put a bit of that “entertainment” factor into the competitions by talking about a supposed rivalry or whatnot. Koscheck trash-talking is just a part of the fight game really, and he really hasn’t gone that far with it. His trash-talking honestly adds to the fight in that people will pay to see him lose, and while I’m not one of those people, there are those that fall for this sort of thing.

This argument is getting old.
I get that MMA purists and certain fans want the sport to be purely based on the action in the cage. I understand. It’s a sport. It’s about athleticism, technique, training, timing, etc. These are the things most MMA fans in general enjoy. I’ve rolled a few times (not enough to claim any kind of experience) and I do Kickboxing training five days a week. I’ve watched MMA for years, Japanese to American. I get where they’re coming from.
The simple FACT is that MMA will NOT achieve the levels of saturation targeted by current promotions purely based on guys with athletic ability and superb technique. To sell a product, you have to have hooks. You need something to get the public interested. You draw flies with honey. That initial attraction must be made for MMA to be successful, support fighters after they retire, and become something more than a niche sport. Period.
You know that this post...
just proves Koscheck right. You’re writing and thinking about him because of his heel-ish comments. Whether or not you realize it, you wanting to tell him to stfu is going to get you more likely to pay for his fight with GSP.
Your response is the very reason he continues to do this.
Anything is better
than boring ass dudes who interview like they have 4 memorized sound bites like “I’m gonna bring the fight to him” or “he’s not gonna know what hit him” or “he’s never fought a fighter like me before”.
