Dana White Confirms UFC 131 in Toronto on April 30
CP24 has word on Dana White's announcement that UFC 131 would take place in Toronto on April 30:
UFC president Dana White says UFC 131 will take place April 30 at the Rogers Centre in Toronto.
White says he expects the mixed martial arts show to be "massive."
Ontario announced in August that it would allow mixed martial arts, starting in 2011.
As usual in politics, money seems to have talked here. Ontario decided that MMA wasn't such a bad idea once Montreal and Vancouver posted massive gates for UFC events. Now if only New York would see things similarly and get on board with mixed martial arts we'd be covered for basically every market that matters in North America.

Grats Ontario
As a New Yorker i’m extremely jealous. Might just make the trek up to see it!
I can’t wait for the day when i can see a UFC event at MSG though
VI68IX
Great news
it hopefully will do 40-50,000 fans that would be awesome! I tink Mania X8 did like 70,000 a few yrs ago i dont think the UFC would draw that much but ya never know if they stack this card
How about
GSP vs. Next Victim
Aldo vs. Grispi
Kampmann vs. Ellenberger/Rocha winner
Pellegrino vs. Lauzon
Maia vs. Palhares

I’d love to see me some Maia/PaulHarris.

You may be right
But I’m just hoping for another Jason MacDonald vs. Maia type of fight. That was such a beautiful display of jiu-jitsu.

The off-chance of "crappy striking" as well?
Because I felt Maia was spending way too much time testing his stand-up against Grove.

Wandy would wreck Sexyama.
Wandy/Leben is a toss-up.

Wandy vs Anybody
would be epic for this card.

Not saying this isn’t an amazing card, but you might need another popular fighter if you want to get to 70k. Rampage or Machida? Carwin will still be rehabbing, right? And Lesnar sounds like he is taking a break til summer or something. Wanderlei would be nice.

If they can get Wandy or Rampage I think they're set

As a Toronto resident
I’m telling you it’s not gonna take much to pack that place.
MMA, and more to the point, the UFC, is a mainstream thing here and is treated as such.

125-131 take place from January 1st to April 30th
7 PPVs in 5 months. Wonder if we’ll get one of them free.
I suffer from IBS, otherwise known as "Influx of Billick Syndrome".
If I had to guess which one will be free...
UFC 127 From Australia, no title fights.
UFC 128 Possibly form Abu Dubai
Plus there is the fight for the troops and probably a season opener card for TUF 13
UFC 127 is way too stacked to be for free. It's confirmed for PPV anyway.
Maybe they’ll have 130 in Europe and have it the week before the Toronto card.
I can sense this will be the time a lot of WEC guys make their appearances.

It really just solidifies your point even further. I think we’re getting 8 or 9 events in a four month time span, 7 of which are PPVs. I can’t remember if there is a Fight Night in there or not.

8 events, 7 numbered cards. UFC Fight for the Troops is a under the Fight Night name, I think.

Is that counting a UFC on VS in there? With VS hosting 4 UFC events next year I’m assuming 1 every quarter. That means you probably need to add a VS event in there as well.
Just BE.
Assuming no breaks or tears, GSP should be ready for this card. It’d help a lot, but it’s not like they need it. It’d be nice to have an impressive card for this event.

A GSP fight and a Cain fight at this would sell big.

I would hate it if the UFC decides to pull a Toronto Maple Leafs on us
and give us a crappy card because they know stupid Torontonians will support them regardless of the product.
I’m born and raised in Toronto and I’m sick of how Torontonians support such a lacklustre product.
On the other hand, I don’t see the UFC short-selling us for this event.

Nah, I bet they wanna make some noise and sell some big tix for it. I expect a STACKED card.

by memitim on Dec 7, 2010 1:19 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
I’m in Southern Ontario myself and i agree with you completely. Maple Leaf fans will spend the money and watch every game religiously. They can have the worst product and still do fine monetarily.
But UFC will not screw toronto over, and anyone that doesn’t think we will sell out the Dome for this event jut doesn’t realize how popular the sport is here. Its not a niche sport here, it is as mainstream as a sport can get

Maybe NY isn't concerned with how much "money" a show can make
Not that I agree with the ban on MMA, but using the “it will make you money” argument is kind of silly.

I think its all politicians
People in NY want MMA even those who dont watch it for the money it would bring to the city as well as upstate NY. NY is in bad shape financially. Several newspapers have done polls it just that those polls are from regular people who dont mind MMA but have enough stuff going on in their lives to go out and make it a personal cause of theirs. We dont like NJ getting MMA shows while we dont.

Machida/Davis is a horrible matchup
I suffer from IBS, otherwise known as "Influx of Billick Syndrome".
Too bad I’ve heard rumblings that the govt are asking for ridiculous handouts just to allow this event, so that it might not be very profitable for the UFC, and might be a one-time thing.
But f*ck it!

Holy shit they aren't kidding
most ‘experts’ thought the ufc would just go to the air canada center first. it would seem to be the logical stepping stone for a bigger show. but this is huge! war canada! lol
