Kenny Florian Injured, Melvin Guillard Steps In Against Evan Dunham at UFC Fight for the Troops 2
Heavy.com with the report:
Heavy.com was informed of the change by sources close to the fight on Monday afternoon.
Florian was scheduled to face rising prospect Dunham in the headlining bout of the Fight for the Troops 2 show on January 22 at Fort Hood, TX. Melvin Guillard has been pulled from his bout with Yves Edwards and will face Dunham in the new main event.
There's no word yet on a new opponent for Yves Edwards, or on the specific nature of Florian's injury, but stay tuned to Bloody Elbow for updates.
UPDATE: Kenny Florian discusses the injury on his website:
It is with deep regret that I will not be able to compete in my scheduled fight against Evan Dunham on January 22nd, due to a knee injury I sustained during training this morning. Although I have not had an MRI as of yet; the doctors are cautiously optimistic that it will not require surgery.
I want to express my sincere apologies to the fans, the UFC and Evan for not being able to compete at UFC Fight Night 23: Fight for the Troops 2. Since early September, I have been training for this fight. Evan is a great fighter and has undoubtedly been working very hard towards this fight as well. Plus, it is a big disappointment that I will not be able to fight in the octagon for the brave soldiers that fight for us.
I am determined to return to the octagon in the first half on 2011. Accordingly, I will keep you all updated.

Melvin can test your chin. But fuckin A if you can throw a sub attempt at him you got another W on your record. I’m hoping his time at Jacksons will help the defense and not stop the aggression

To be fair
Mel’s just doing his camp with Jackson. The gameplan will be Greg Jackson, but his main training is with a Sambo expert. He’s been working on being more aggressive about getting in there and clinching, and then actually doing something with that. Hopefully this will allow him to be more aggressive with his hands as well. However, he will be following the Jackson plan, whatever that is, so that’s the big unknown.
Tentative Melvin
The Melvin that showed up for the Stephens fight would get tooled by Dunham IMO. Dunham has range and throws straight punches.
I don’t think we will, since the reaction from his last fight was so…emphatic.
Well obviously he's going to have a different gameplan
Dunham and Stephens are entirely different fighters.

It’s just a different opponent as well. Stephens has one punch KO power, so I understand why the gameplan was to fight more tentatively. Because of the range, I don’t think that strategy would work on Dunham, and Guillard may also have to worry about the takedown, whereas with Stephens, he didn’t have to. I think that if Guillard wants to get his strikes and connect, he may have to go on the inside and stay in the pocket instead of fighting from the outside.

I don't know what we see.
I was really looking forward to that fight, but I am a big Guillard fan and this is a big opportunity for him. I know his last fight was boring, but I am hoping more time with Greg Jackson will help him better use his tools. I can’t imagine him tentative or over thinking again. I hope not.
I like Guilliard too
And I can’t help but think he’s getting a little screwed here. He matches up much better against Yves, IMHO than against a hungry Dunham coming off a loss. I think Melvin’s got the skill set and strength at LW to give anyone problems, but I hope he’s getting paid extra for solving the UFC’s problem.
Tatum: I think he's a good man. I like him. I got nothing against him, but I'm definitely gonna make orphans of his children.

I like Melvin as well, but
I can’t see any realistic way he wins this. Then again, I didn’t see any realistic chance of Rampage evolving as he did and beating Machida, so…

I really don’t think it matters what kind of magic gameplan Greg Jackson thinks up or if the Melvin we see is the tentative stick and move fighter throwing one jab at a time or the bull rush Melvin who looks to brake your jaw with brutal hooks and cave in your side with knees and body shots. It really won’t matter in the end becasue this is a horrible style match up no matter what Guillard steps foot in that octagon. I see him probably getting subbed maybe TKO’ed late but probably loosing a easy one sidded 30-27 decision. I do give him credit though for taking this fight.
Damn. That was fight going to be nuts.
Not that I condone facism or any ism for that matter. Isms are in my opinion, not good. A person shouldn't believe in an ism, he should believe in himself.

Tough fight for Winner to take on fairly short notice.
If he were to take the fight and lose he would probably receive his walking papers.

Hmmmm
I actually like this match-up, it’s intriguing at the very least. Still sad about Kenflo though, that was one hell of a match-up. Hopefully we can have a Cerrone/Florian fight in march though :D
Florian would make Cerrone his pet.

Donald Cerrone?
I don’t shit on the WEC lightweights as hard as some do but Cerrone never made any noise anywhere but with the lower tier guys. Plus Kenny, I would say quite literally, does everything better than he does.
Or is this like a reverse psychology thing? You don’t like him and you want him to die, so you throw him in with the guy who puts guys (like Cerrone) in body bags at his cornermen’s command. I see the big picture now.
this fight makes no fucking sense...
I say take Dunham out of this bullshit fight and take Siver out of the Sotty fight and switch them. Let Siver and Guillard battle it out for the fight night and make a fight worth watching in Sotty vs. Dunham. UFC has been making some stupid ass decisions lately.

Because Guillard/Siver is not a main event fight? They’re doing the best they can with what they have.

Guillard vs. Diaz was though?

that it is fucking awesome.
Guillard-Dunham is a fight worth watching.
Guillard-Siver 2 would be the bullshit fight.

That’s actually a pretty good idea. I’m pretty sure Melvin already fought Siver though. Knocked him out a few years back. Could be an interesting rematch though. Sot vs Dunham makes a lot more sense than Sot vs Siver.
Uhhh, Melvin already ended Siver's evening once

Sotiropoulos is fighting Siver to keep busy. He doesn't need to smash a contender to get his title shot.
And then God created Saturn... and he liked it, so he put a ring on it.

This x 10000
Sotty has fought a shitload of grapplers. If you look at their rankings, the fight makes no sense, but if you look at the style matchup and who George has faced in the UFC to date, it makes perfect sense.

I'm a fan of Guillard in the cage
but a fan of Dunham all around. This is a great style matchup. Evan is technical and quick with a great reach at 155. Guillard won’t be able to just dance around this time, even if he wants to.

I favor technical prowess
However, speed and timing above all else. I am looking for that Martinez/Williams 2 outcome for Guillard with Dunham face down.
…I hope.

Injury? Really Kenny? Really?
Sounds like he doesn’t want to choke in another main event infront of our brothers & sisters in uniform.
Orrr… he’s really injured. Either one.

My sarcasm detector is probably broken, but Dunham is nether an elite wrestler nor BJ Penn. I had Kenny by TKO.

How are people not interested in Guillard??
It’s a guy with obvious talent whose losses have all come by submission except for one decision 7 years ago. He’s training with Jackson now so you have to figure the sub-defense will improve and he proved he could stick to a game plan in the last fight (whether you think it was boring or not) while outclassing Jeremy Stephens.
Not afraid to nitpick
Nah..
I felt he would have won easily
