Demian Maia, speaking to MMA Junkie following the TUF 12 Finale, compliments Kendall Grove on his BJJ defense:
"I'm happy because I won, of course," Maia said. "I wanted to submit him in this fight, but Kendall was smart. At one point I was baiting him to go to the side when I was on his back because I wanted to switch to the arm-and-neck submission.
"He didn't go even though his corner was saying, 'Go to the side, go to the side. Escape your hips.' He was not escaping, and I was like, '[Expletive]!' After the fight, he said to me, 'You wanted me escape my hips to that side so you could switch to that submission.' I said, 'Yeah, you're smart.'"

Ditto!
Use your length. His footwork could be a problem.

Yeah. I feel every tall fighter should f*ckin watch either Klitschko brother fight. Heck, look at Lennox Lewis old fights. Yeah, I know they’re boxers and they don’t have to worry about takedowns but how difficult is it to jab, jab, and move out of harm’s way?
F*ck! Michael Bisping got the memo.

Michael Bisping’s defense is terrible lol. He gets consistently smashed by hard shots every fight

Add me to that sentiment.
I was very impressed with him on the ground defensively, but man I really didn’t expect it to be contested on the ground to that extent. I thought Grove could work his length at least some…

Al Bundy and Chuck Norris was right.
Eventually you’re going to get to a point where the talent is so high, you’ll reach some sort of stalemate. The guys that lose out are the guys that can not afford high level bjj instruction or travel to better specialized trainers like Kenny Florian and GSP.

Something tells me that McGee would stop Grove in 2 rounds or the beginning of the 3rd.

Grove is not a bad fighter
This is a hell of a compliment coming from Maia. It would be like explaining to Vadim how you renegotiated and him saying “you’re smart.”

Nate: When I banned Subo?

Except this isn't out of Maia's character at all.

After losing to Anderson Silva, Maia has followed-up with wins over tall fighters in Mario Miranda and Kendall Grove. It’s time for him to fight some top ten fighters, or “name” fighters like Bisping, or maybe Leben.
While fighters like Miranda, Miller, and Grove are now defending submissions from Maia, they are still getting taken down (at will) and getting controlled, which says a lot about Maia’s wrestling and top control.

Kendall's a tougher match up than either of those two.
Chris is always an X factor but he got subbed my rolsholt and Bisbing got choked to sleep by wandy and literally saved by the bell. I like Maia’s odds in those fights.

Bisping would be on his bycicle the whole fight
But I don’t think he has the power to rock Maia as he comes in and Maia should be able to get him to the mat each round, where he should be able to sub him.

The idea for a Bisping vs Maia fight is more for Maia fighting a Middleweight with some name value, and seeing Bisping’s placement on UFC cards, a Maia vs Bisping fight could be a co-main event if not a main event depending on the value of the card (Fight Night, free on SpikeTV UFC numbered card). I totally expect Maia to beat Bisping myself.

I was wondering what they were talking about post fight...
I think like many Hawaii fighters, he should leave Hawaii. Train with some top trainers again like his old days.

I love when Maia gives insight like this
I don’t have “baiting” anywhere in my game in jiu jitsu lol. I usually just do the standard “go for one thing and capitalize on the probable reaction”. Baiting seems like it requires a much deeper knowledge of jiu jitsu and I don’t even hear upper belts talking about it very often.
I sometimes get the feeling though that I’m being baited by a more senior guy. Like “oh it was a little too easy for me to recover half guard there, this feels fishy” and then I get a Mendes rolling back-take put on me.
Marcelo Garcia talks about it often, although he doesn’t call it “baiting”.He lets people do some things so that he could examine certain moves, options. He says that if he has his opponent in a position without an exit it’s not interesting to him because he can’t see his opponents reactions, escapes and can’t study the game. Like advanced chess playing. Tricky little bastard puts you in his little laboratory and observes your reactions.

Lookit Maia's debut vs. Ed Herman
As someone noted, he “baited” Herman into attempting a guard pass which was intercepted by Maia’s (successful, fight-ending) triangle choke.
