The Art of Entrance Music
Quite possibly the most overlooked aspect of promotion a fighter can employ is theme music, or an "entrance song". Many MMA fans and fighters fail to realize the impact a definable personal theme song can have for a fighter's career. Having come originally as a pro-wrestling fan from an early age, I always knew the importance of a good theme song. It's what separated a Jake "The Snake" Roberts, a good solid wrestler who never reached the top of the card from a wrestler like Tugboat/Typhoon, a large (something Roberts did not have), dependable wrestler who never really escaped the bottom of the card. As a child I loved Jake. Why? Because he had a badass synth theme song (which you can listen to HERE) that could be used both as a heel (bad guy) or face (good guy) depending on who he was fighting that week. Ignoring Jake being a better wrestler, or a better "promo", to a child Jake Roberts was cool. Tugboat had...Well...He was big which is a bonus, he made a signature "toot toot" noise (he was a tugboat, get it?) and as Typhoon he had the sounds of an earthquake for a theme because he was teaming with a guy named Earthquake...When I translated to MMA in 2000, I carried my same love of a good "theme song" for the fighters I watched.
As I've aged, I've come to find out that I have a deep love of music. And while I can't play a single instrument or tell you how a piece of music is constructed in words, I find that I have a pretty sophisticated sense of music. Perhaps I missed my life's calling somewhere along the line. This has only deepened my love of "good entrance music" to a near obsessive level for both pro-wrestling (yes I still watch god help me) and mixed martial arts.
In MMA, it's much harder to get to the level required for a theme song to be played on a national stage. You either have to prove yourself on the prelims, or have proved yourself on The Ultimate Fighter. And it's no easier in Japan where you have to appeal to some basic instinct the Japanese have for "gaijins" or be Japanese. You have to earn the right to have a theme played in the MMA world. So why is it that so many fighters simply pick nondescript metal? Or rap? Or god forbid "Simple Man" by Lynyrd Skynyrd? The answer is simple; many fighters simply do not understand the art of promotion and likewise feel their choice of entrance music holds little importance. This simply isn't true. A theme song that defines a fighter can turn a low level fighter into a fighter fans have difficulty forgetting. It can turn a good fighter into a star. And it can cement the status of a legend. A theme song is an integral part in the process of selling who you are to the fans. It's great to be a good fighter, but who are you as a person? What's your position? What are you fighting for? Are you cool? Are you cocky? Do you have any definable personality whatsoever? Why should we care about you? Add in a little light show, some pyrotechnics, and CGI (if you are PRIDE and willing to spend two million per entrance). Suddenly you have a package selling a fighter to the audience with a cute little bow placed on their head saying "please pay to see me fight".
That all being said, not every fighter fails at making this distinction. There are many fighters who understand (or simply have fantastic taste in music) and use it to their advantage. Most of them have gone on to be some of the biggest stars in MMA history. Coincidence? I think not.
Below, I've wrote up a list of virtually every "definable" theme song I could come up with. There are bound to be entries missing. I also have a large gap in my MMA history catalog with the middle age's UFC's. I can go back and watch those shows all I want, but I can't see the entrances or the impacts they had. This means I did not list songs such as "Ice Ice Baby (Metal Remix)" for Liddell. I never saw them. Many of the PRIDE broadcasts cut entrances as well, so there's another gap there. I "obtained access" to Japanese broadcasts at points, but naturally there is a gap.
I have also omitted K-1 themes. As much as I love K-1, it isn't MMA.
What makes a song "defined" enough for this list? I have two qualifications:
1) The theme in question must have been used for a significant portion of time in the fighter's career. Any song used once or twice then dropped is not considered viable.
AND/OR
2) The theme in question must have been used for a "important" point in the fighter's career. If you hear the song, you think of the MMA moment with that fighter. That qualifies it for the list. A good example is Randy Couture using "Back in the Saddle" when he returned to fight Tim Sylvia. That was the definition of an "Awwww shit son" moment.
NOW~! ONTO THE LIST~!
Randy Couture - Back in the Saddle
Randy Couture - Stranglehold
Kazushi Sakuraba - Speed2 TK Remix
Wanderlai Silva - Sandstorm
Fedor Emelianenko - Enae Volare Mezzo
BJ Penn - Hawaii '78 + E ala E
Enson Inoue - Fiji Chant of the Island
Matt Hughes - A Country Boy Can Survive
Marcus Davis - Jump Around
Forrest Griffin - I'm Shipping Up To Boston
Anderson Silva - Ain't No Sunshine
Urijah Faber - California Love
Frank Mir - Amazing
Takanori Gomi - SCARY -Delete streamin' freq. from fear side-
Shinya Aoki - Baka Survivor
Minowaman - One Minute In Heaven (30 seconds in)
Brock Lesnar - Enter Sandman
Michael Bisping - Song 2
Mirko Cro Cop - Wild Boys
Yoshihiro Akiyama - Con te Partiro
Alistair Overeem - I Gotta Feeling
Josh Barnett - Ai Wo Torimodose!!
Josh Koscheck - Higher Ground
Mayhem Miller - Lava Lava
Hatsu Hioki - Moonlight Shadow
Masaaki Satake - Godzilla March (Satake's custom vers not available on youtube)
Hidehiko Yoshida - The Secret
Kiyoshi Tamura - Frame of Mind
Nobuhiko Takada - Training Montage
The Gracie Family - Last of the Mohicans Fort Battle Theme
Mark Coleman - Wild Hammer
Bob Sapp - Also Sprach Zarathustra
Akihiro Gono - Age♂Age♂ Every☆Knight
Kazuo Misaki - Introduction 010
From here, I'm calling on you of the BE Community to fill up the gaps in my list. There are probably some embarrassing omissions here, so let me know which themes I missed as I compiled this. Also, feel free to pick one (or even several) "theme songs" from this list or from your own choices as well. Later on, I'll post a revised list and my own top ten "MMA Entrance Themes of all time" list. If I get enough responses I'll add a "Reader's List" of the choices that came up the most often as well.

Yup, this has to be #1 on the list
I can’t stand club music, but go bonkers when i hear this song. I completely associate this song with Wandy, and always will.
This was his normal entrance music, and god-damn EPIC.

My favorite entrance ever is Penn/Hughes II (yeah, BJ’s name comes first now – deal with it) when Penn came out to that mix of Hawaii ’78 and Crazy.
Also, you forgot Big Nog – Gimme Shelter. Though that one would be better if the UFC had better speakers.

Came here to write the same thing about Penn/Hughes 2 walk out.
Not that I condone facism or any ism for that matter. Isms are in my opinion, not good. A person shouldn't believe in an ism, he should believe in himself.
I quote John Lennon, "I don't believe in Beatles, I just believe in me". Good point there, after all he was the walrus. I could be the walrus. Wouldn't change the fact I have to bum rides off of people.
The Miller Brothers come out to Creedance Clearwater Revival. Jim has “Bad Moon Rising” and Dan “Run Through the Jungle”. Back when he fought Cote, Almeida came out to “Fortunate Son” and I thought, briefly, that CCR was about to catch on and be THE entrance music for Jersey guys from that Renzo umbrella, alas, it was not to be as it was a one-off choice.
Just Blog Guy - http://JustBlogGuy.wordpress.com/
Good post. I think Strikeforce really drops the ball when it comes to entrance music, they use generic non-descript stuff that’s barely audible on the broadcast.
Few more fighters with recognisable walk-in music.
Chuck came out to DMX’s Intro for about four years worth of fights
Fitch always walks out to Cash’s cover of Rusty Cage, which is pretty awesome.
Hardy – England Belongs To Me
Cerrone – Cowboy
Don’t know if he’ll keep using it but Leben’s entrance to Love Rollercoaster at 116 was pretty memorable
What I don’t like is when two notable fighters both use the same song. Examples are Dos Santos and Serra both using the Rocky song or Marquardt and Bonnar using Eminence Front, Nate and JDS may be the better fighters but Serra and Bonnar were both using the songs long before they were.
I thought Bonnar coming out to Eminence Front was perfect.
I wish he’d do it every time.

A few that usually catch my attention:
Bad Moon Rising: Ricardo Almeida and Jim Miller (although he used the Sopranos theme when he fought in NJ)
For Those About To Rock: Rich Franklin
Rocky Theme: Matt Serra
Simple Man: Mike Brown
Sabotage: Evan Dunham
bj penn akiyama and wandy have the best entrances
although wandys and akiyamas were so much more epic in japan
"I have smoked weed with alot of UFC champions" - Joe Rogan
Gonzaga came out to Mother by Danzig..very cool
Too bad he went on to lose to Brendan Schaub and get cut.
Have you ever noticed that anybody driving slower than you is an idiot, and anyone going faster than you is a maniac?
George Carlin
Loved it too
it did seem to be fitting for Gonzaga, until he lost. babalu used it once or twice as well.
And I think the original post forgot a big one. Funny that my wife was the one to ask about this this weekend, and reminded, but if she remembers babalu by his theme music, which seems to be the epitome of this post:
Babalu: Pharoah Monch – Simon Says: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T7Fy5w2klbg
I think the song also did a good job of crossing over crowds. As opposed to some of the songs played, this one seemed to be accepted by a lot of the crowds when the UFC
I like Cro Cop’s “Wild Boys.” I second the vote for Wanderlei’s “Sandstorm” and BJ’s “Hawaii ’78 + E ala E”.
I remember when Bisping had his 1st post-TUF fight, he came out to “London Calling”. That was EPIC, esp in light of the US vs UK theme. Too bad he’s since opted out for more cheesy selections.
Finally, no love for Miguel Torres? Don’t know the title, but he was coming out to mariachi way before it was cool.

There is nothing worse, to me, then when a fighter comes out to the newest song on the most recent Rap album.
I remember when Lil Waynes Tha Carter III came out, and like, the next 3 fight cards always had atleast 2 or 3 fighters with one of his songs. Only for those fighters to have a new walk-out song the next fight.
Fun topic, nice post.
Akiyama – Time to Say Goodbye
Jeff Monson (one time only) – Imagine
I did a story on entrance music a couple of years ago — Dana White and Rich Franklin really enjoyed talking about it.
By the way
I have thought about this more than I care to admit, and I’ve come up with two perfect walk-out songs: “Ecstasy of Gold” and “Seven Nation Army.” I’ve never heard a fighter using either.
"Burritos are my life." - BJ Penn
Great idea for a fanpost. There are few things in MMA more fun than a great fighter entrance. I’ve always loved Cro Cop’s use of “Wild Boys” and Akiyama’s “Time to Say Goodbye” (the English/Italian version of “Con Te Partiro” with Sarah Brightman on there).
I really wish Anderson Silva had stuck with “Don’t Stop Till You Get Enough” by Michael Jackson. I guess I really like it when great fighters are paired up with kinda wussy music.
I’ve never cared for Matt Hughes much, but I have to admit “A Country Boy Can Survive” is perfect for him.

A Brazilian fighter needs to come out to Convicted in Life by Sepultura.
Nick Diaz should walk out to Sweet Leaf by Black Sabbath.
A few other ideas for good metal walkouts: Battle Scars by Winds of Plague. Gagged, Bound, Shelved and Forgotten or When Life Meant More by All Shall Perish. Wild Boys as covered by Mnemic (for Cro Cop). Future Breed Machine by Meshuggah. Or a billion other things by band with actual talent. Fuck Dragonforce, and Luca Turilli (guitarist from Rhapsody) is absurdly tiring.

Great Job!
Due to responses, I’ve already been able to add seven new themes to the list. Keep em coming!
I have no idea how I forgot Rich Franklin’s theme…
I really got into Fedor using Oy To Ne Vecher
To me, that entrance just defines nostalgia…and Fedor being a guy who had been in the game so long without losing, it’s just great.
I agree that fighters don’t embrace the potential entertainment aspect entrance music can bring. I for one am known for looking deadfaces, bored, or slightly pissed at all times unless I’m laughing at something…I’d probably be a pretty boring guy walking in, I wouldn’t jump, wave my arms, and I’d probably stay looking down the whole time.
So I for one would want to go with songs that were as entertaining as possible. I’d go for funny stuff too. The first thing I would try and do is find a song that relates to the location(I always thought ‘Walking in Memphis’ for a Memphis fight would be hilarious)
But if I were to get in the mode of having just on entrance song, I’d probably pick an oldie(for me at least, I’m 18)…Downeaster Alexa by Billy Joel just has such a great folk sound about it and would keep me chill…and even though it’s about fishing, the lyrics can sort of be applied to fighting.
But if I ever fought in foreign countries, I don’t think I’d be able to stuff myself from coming out to some shit like ‘Real American’
And if I was facing an epic sh!t talker like Hardy or Kos…I’d have to come out to something like ‘Go to sleep’ by Eminem…and it would probably catch people off gaurd, because otherwise I’d be a guy who walks out to goofy stuff.
CPG
Hhaha my exact thoughts on the Eminem and Fedor part.
Maybe “i wont back down” would be pretty good song to walk out to in a title fight.
I also like that Junior comes out to “gonna fly now”

The most obvious choice that hasn't happened
is that Shogun should walk out to Momma Said Knock You Out. I like the new Street Sweeper Social Club version personally. But it’s the perfect song. Lead in with “Don’t call it a comeback!” and then the chorus promises that he’s gonna knock you out. Considering that he’s KO’d 76% of the people he’s faced in his 8ish year career… it’s a fair statement.

Thiago Silva coming out to Sepultura – Ratamahatta @ UFC 102 was awesome. Unfortunately I think he’s only used it the once. The video is incredible too. Stop-motion by the late, great Fred Stuhr.
If someone comes out to pretty much anything by Maximum the Hormone, I’ll be an insta-fan.
Satoshi Kon
R.I.P.
The strangest was Monson using John Lennon's "Imagine".
Against Tim Sylvia, I believe…

I believe the song sincs up with his political views so it makes sense
Doesn’t exactly get the blood pumping though

Dan Hardy
Using “England belongs to me” will become standard for him I think. He used it for GSP and maybe the Davis fight aswell. Cock sparrer actually Re-recorded the song and featured Hardy on it, which is pretty cool of them and for him.

Goldberg: "He's got him in some kind of strange choke I've never seen before!"
Rogan: "That's a rear naked choke."
Marcus Aurelio came out to Du Hast...
…at UFC 78 in Newark, NJ….it was awesome….
This live concert Du Hast video is approaching 17 million views on Youtube:

Du hast would be great, totally agree.
I’m pretty sure somebody came out to Du hast at UFC 122, maybe Kris McCray?
The best entrance on that show was Vemola’s though. The terminator theme followed by O Fortuna, made him look like a complete badass (and he certainly fought like one as well).
O Fortuna...
My wife and I came out to O Fortuna at our wedding reception…..
/turns out it is a great fight intro song…….9 years and still brawling…..

Massive Attack - Angel
If I was a fighter, that would be my entrance song.
Not for the lyrics, but the instrumentals are intense!!
I was shocked to learn that the singer is a dude.

Kill Bill Soundtrack - Battle Without Honour or Humanity
This is pretty much the most bad@$$ song you could ever walk out to. I dont know why it hasnt been used yet.
My Book in stores now!! http://www.amazon.com/Wormwood-Chase-Baker/dp/1453868313/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1291677984&sr=8-1
Seeing as BJ Penn always licks an opponent's blood off of his gloves
I think it would be cool if he walked out to ‘Blood on My Hands’ by The Used.
Badass song.

Akihiro Gono UFC 94
This was my favourite entrance of all time, not just because of the song, but the whole thing was just hilarious. Fitch said after he couldn’t stop laughing at the corner men.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4DUNxVpK4Zo
Anderson Silva’s Pride entarnce with Michael jackson danceing was also pretty sweet.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Tyc3Zjp25g
Anonymity breeds contempt.
Seriously, the Gono one needs to be seen to be believed, him and his cornermen in full drag, with a synchronised dance routine! Priceless.
Anonymity breeds contempt.
I would love for Josh Koscheck to come out to “Runaway” by Kanye West, uncensored of course. The lights go out, that piano intro, and of course the chorus would just be badass with an echo of boos behind it. Unless you live under a rock, here’s the song.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C6CJQ_hnm24
Tell me that wouldn’t be epic.
huh
FUCK Kanye.
First of all, I wanna thank God for giving everybody so much, and me, so little. I hate you, I hate you, and I don't even know you and I hate your guts. I hope all the bad things in life happen to you, and nobody else, but you.

When's someone coming out to some DVDA?

This quote
I am a shark, the ground is my ocean, and most people don’t even know how to swim
Makes me want to see someone come out to the Jaws theme.
Guillotine.
The one song who's opening notes alone will put every person who every played nintendo growing up into a bloodfrenzy...
I'd have to say
That Jon Fitch walking out to Johnny Cash’s cover of Rusty Cage is THE BEST walk out music I can think of. The song is driving, ominous, gloomy and gives a general feeling of hopelessness… much like fighting Jon Fitch!
I would also say
That Big Nog’s walkout to Gimme Shelter and Dan Hardy’s England Belongs to Me are great, too (weird to hear Cock Sparrer at a sporting event!)
Might as well add Megumi Fujii – Ride On Shooting Star
Definitely matches her persona.
obviously
Joachim Hansen has some of the best entrance songs.
and
Amon Amarth – Pursuit of Vikings
A bonus walkout song is from Homer vs. Drederick Tatum
talking to myself since my therapist has had it.
ok obviously you guys are not hip to the groove
Nine inch nails has the most perfect entrance song ever made. how anyone here has not listed it is just beyond me. Of all the fucked up songs for an MMA fighter to come out to, what would be more scary, more enraging, more repulsive, more…..confusing, than CLOSER. you are hearing it in your head right now, lights low, that piston pressure sound echoing through the arena,
“you let me violate you”
your opponent, whether in the octagon or back stage, would be doing everything they can to NOT hear that song.
“HELP ME, YOU BROKE APART MY INSIDES”
you are now in the octagon waiting to rip your opponent limb from limb and the only thing the crowd and the guy you are about to…..wait for it…..RAPE, is trying not to focus on the words blaring out of the speakers
“I WANNA FUCK YOU LIKE AND ANIMAL, MY WHOLE EXISTENCE IS FLAWED, YOU GET ME CLOSER TO GOD”
that my fellow elitists, is an entrance song to define, defile, and deliver the most awesome fight you will ever see.
ufc fan boy all the way
or they’ll get laughed out of the arena.

Ready for the Fight - The Young Punx
Cool beat, very fitting lyrics…entertaining song that isn’t too high octane, so you’d stay relaxed on your way to the Octagon.
