Being a native of St. Louis as well as knowing a few of the preliminary fighters on tonight's card, I'd like to give you a first hand experience of what I saw tonight. I'll give my thoughts and the audience's reactions for this amazing card.
Benji Radach vs. Ovince Saint Preux - It started off great, Ovince impressed me by continuously rocking Radach in the first, getting his back and pummeling the bejeesus out of Radach's head and body. The last minute of round 1 had Saint Preux wailing on Radach, and personally I thought it should have been finished there, and so did the audience by the screams of "STOP THE FIGHT REF!" The second and third round were the same thing: Saint Preux having Radach's back and just punching, that or Radach hold Saint Preux against the cage. All in all, Radach did NOTHING and Ovince got the well deserved UD.
"Big Foot" Silva vs. Mike Kyle - Near the beginning of the first round Kyle landed a nice right straight on Silva's chin, sending Silva to the canvas. Everyone stood up while cheering, all thinking this was the end of the fight, but Silva managed to hang on through the entire round. In the second round, Big Foot turned the tide and ended up getting mount on Kyle and letting loose with double hammer fists and solid punches causing the referee to step in, and everyone to stand up and applaud.
Robbie Lawler vs. Matt Linland - After reading all of the staff's picks on Bloody Elbow before the fight, I was convinced that Lawler was going to come out and demolish Linland...and he did exactly that. It took only 50 seconds for Lawler to land a beautiful punch that send Linland tumbling to the ground. Linland tried to spin around to get back in position, only to be met by another huge right hand from Linland putting him out cold. The entire arena erupted in cheers as everyone was in shock at what they just witnessed. One interesting thing that may have not been shown: after landing the second right hand, Lawler stopped punching, and looked at the ref to make sure the ref realized Linland was out. Not only that, but after Lawler got up, he helped straighten Linland's legs out and carefully watched over him as the medical team was attending to Matt. A very considerate gesture that earned a lot of respect for Lawler in my book.
Paul Daley vs. Scott Smith - This was the fight I had been looking forward to all night as I am a huge Daley fan and that it was guaranteed to be a stand up war. Daley rocked Smith around 30 seconds into the round, but Smith recovered and the two continued to go at it. Soon enough, Daley landed an amazing left uppercut that send Smith flopping to the canvas out cold. As I may have stated before, I sat right next to where all the fighters exit after their fights, and when Smith walked passed everyone you couldn't help but feel bad for the guy. He took the loss really hard and you could see it in his eyes, everyone cheered for him as he walked pass.
Dan Henderson vs. Renato "Babalu" Sobral - Everyone cheered as Babalu came out, but it was when Henderson was announced that the place exploded. It felt like Henderson was everyone's dad and we were his kids watching him fight. Names are announced and the fight begins, and Hendo looks like he did in his Pride days, stalking Babalu around the cage. He lands a couple good shots that sends Sobral to the mat and trying to pull guard, but Dan stands up and away from it. Henderson has Babalu's legs and then lands a HUGE right hand to Babalu's chin, dazing him. From there, Hendo lands one more giant right hand and Sobral's done for the night. Everyone's dad had won, and we all let him know we were cheering for him the whole time.
After all was said and done, it was a fantastic night of fights, and I am just glad I got to witness it all. I hope you all enjoyed reading this, and take care
