So does beating Todd Duffee make him top 10?
Dana must be laughing
Yes
Brett Rogers and Todd Duffee are not world beaters. But the Fedor Overeem fight is now more juicy. I want to see it.

I think Fedor would argue that fighting the Reem has been a really JUICY proposition for a long time now.
Given how thin the HW division is, he probably does deserve to be in the top 10, despite beating sub-par competition. But beating Duffee does not make you top 10

He was already top 10
Let’s face it. Destroying cans/prospects makes an elite fighter look kinda tough. Struggling with them is when you question their abilities.

Beating Duffee doesn’t make you top 10, but Overeem did what you should expect a top ten fighter to do to a young prospect — beat the shit out of him in the first round.

he just simply manhandled him in 19 seconds. Cain needed at least 2 min to dispatch Jake O’Brian, who is by far a much worse fighter than Duffee. Just enjoy Overeem fights!

No but
make no mistake, Overeem is a BAAAD man. He is hitting his peak right now. Should be interesting. I think Fedor should have fought him 2 years ago. The Reem is way better now than he was then and I would venture a guess that Fedor is not quite what he was 2 years ago. I am a Fedor fan but I don’t think he can beat Overeem.
Yeah
How does Fedor win that fight? He can’t possibly want to stand with him and good luck taking him down with those throws. It’s a hail mary overhand right’s chance IMO.
Not afraid to nitpick
Hits him
I don’t expect Fedor to win, but Fedor has an uncanny ability to put guys to sleep when he catches them. Having to defend the takedown, Overeems striking might open up a little bit and give Fedor a window, but Overeem is the clear favorite I think

So happy
Aoki took a nap, after that Starnes crap in the first round. Cheating and running and falling on the mat. I liked Aoki before didn’t necessarily agree with his post fight tactics he did but liked him. But after that first round I change my mind. That went against what Japanese mma fighters are about they go out on they’re shields. Aoki that was a joke.
by Bloodsport on Dec 31, 2010 10:38 AM EST via mobile reply actions
Aoki got what he deserved
What Aoki did in those first three minutes was flat-out embarrassing. It was just such a fitting end to see Aoki get KO’d like that and also puts the stamp on how ridiculous he was. Starnes ran, but this is just as embarrassing in that Aoki blatantly broke the rules but in such an idiotic looking way. I wonder if this affects Aoki’s rankings in MMA? At least with another fight in Duffee vs Overeem, Duffee came to fight, but he of course got KO’d
I won't jump off the bandwagon just because you lost.

Btw, I think that anyone that says Duffee threw the fight is insane. That left hook would have KO’ed just about anyone IMO.
i'm not insane. I'm also not saying Duffee threw the fight
but the way he slumps over looks suspicious consider he stood up in 5 seconds and was smirking at Overeem in 20.

i think he just got flashed.partly because of the knee to the body.
Sometimes people come right to. Look at shamrock vs. Frye. Shamrock pops up like he is on springs.
So the K1 grand prix champ needs duffee! To take a dive…… that theory doesn’t have legs bud. MegaReem touches people in four oz. Gloves and they go to sleep. This isn’t news.

For clarification- I'm in NO way implying Duffee took a dive
It looked obvious after the first TD attempt that he wasn’t going to get AO on his back, and he was helpless in the standup. He ate a couple of huge knees, and it looks to me like he made the decision to just get hit and crumple. That was a dirty left hook, but the motion of Duffee’s body after the KO just doesn’t look normal to me. Or how he slumped over through the ropes. It looks fabricated. It looks like someone who knows he’s rocked who doesn’t want to shoot for a single leg for time to recover.

One of the best punchers on the planet hit him square on the button with the same short left hook that knocked out Badr Hari after he had already wobbled. That’s not fabricated.
Not afraid to nitpick
Worth noting:
This fight got finished almost exactly as I called it in the striking questions fanpost. Short left hook. I don’t find it suspicious that Duffee got knocked out by exactly what he was susceptible to being hit by.

In the Neck
Looks like he takes the brunt of the blow (once his jaw was moved out of the way) right in the neck. Sending a wave of blood up into the brain. Another way to get KTFO and it doesn’t even have to be as hard as that left hook.

If you think this is staged you are flat 100% wrong. If you watch Duffee’s head, after he gets hit, his neck goes completely limp and his head starts oscillating like a bobble head doll. You don’t do that unless you are unconscious.
I really do hope that Duffee gets some wins in 2011

It was 50/50 K1 and MMA
The fighters called a coin flip to determine which rule set would be enacted in the first round, so it was fair.
Thanks for clearing that up, the bet Trigg and Voice made makes sense now.
Here’s my question though, does this loss still go on his MMA record?
It’s not updated in his fight finder on sherdog so my guess is that it does not. They’re usually on the ball when they update a fighter’s record so if it’s not there already I doubt will be any time soon.

Happy with results
Glad that Ishii, Kharitonov, and Zaromskis picked up wins. Lets get that Kharitonov-Overeem rubber match!
Very glad that Thompson got crushed, his personality just always kinda pissed me off, when asked to give thoughts about the Condit-Hardy fight, he said he didn’t care, because he just beat a guy who beat both of them. He also spouted shit about the WEC-UFC merger saying crap like ‘they are celebrating that the WEC failed, how is it getting put into the UFC a good thing? it just means they were a failuer’ or something along those lines.
So yeah, f*ck him.
I am also super glad that Aoki got knocked the f’ck out as well, I’m even happier that he embarassed himself long enough to stall through the K-1 round to actually get knocked out in the MMA round.
Very glad Overeem dumped Duffee so fast as opposed to putting a long grueling beating on him. Kudos to Duffee for taking the fight, and I hope he rebounds successfully and gets a lot of wins under his belt. There was the line of thought that Duffee shouldn’t have been fighting Overeem, and at least Overeem absolutely proved it.
How else do you prove that you are ready to fight the best besides absolutely destroying the guys that aren’t the best?
Overeem is on another level. Guys like Rogers and Duffee were undefeated, stopping all of their opponents, their first losses were far from poor performances, with Rogers giving Fedor a very tough first round and Duffee absolutely dominating Russow for 2.5 rounds before getting caught. Rogers didn’t have anything for Overeem, and got mauled for nearly 4 minutes, Duffee couldn’t last 20 seconds without getting his clock cleaned.
StrikeForce, set up Overeem vs Werdum for March…set up all of your heavyweights to fight eachother. You don’t even have to do a tournament in a traditional setting, just make the winners fight winners of other fights. With the UFC’s heavyweight division on stall, StrikeForce seriously needs to activate their own and make things happen if they want to shake up the rankings and take the full 7 weight class dominance away from Zuffa…the heavyweight division is really the only division they have a hope of doing so in.

Alistair Overeem - StrikeForce HeavyWeight Champion, K-1 2010 World Grand Prix Champion
It's not very nice of Alistair to piss on Mike Russow's parade like that.
Well, anybody who knows me knows I'm no fan of dictionaries or reference books. They're elitist. Constantly telling us what is or isn't true. Or what did or didn't happen.
In my opinion, Overeem continues to make his case for being one of the top HW’s in the world right now. I mean, look at what he’s doing. He fought seven times in 2010 and went 7-0, and that’s a lot more than most “top heavyweights” can say. When you look at the HW picture, most of the fighters have been largely inactive, whether because of contractual issues or injury. People can continue to say that he doesn’t deserve to be in the top 10, stating that the top heavyweights in the UFC would beat him handily. But as of now, that’s mere speculation and many of those fighters are on the shelf for the foreseeable future. I hate to sound like I’m saddling The Reem’s gargantuan nuts, but I feel like a lot of the discord comes from people who accept Dana’s comments blindly as truth (because after all, he’s DFW) without taking the time to watch Overeem’s fights and the quality of his training at Golden Glory (check out his documentary “The Reem” if you haven’t already). After all, as CaptnAmerica said above, he handled Duffee just like you would expect a top fighter to.
He handled Duffee better than you'd expect anyone else to
17 seconds? Who else in the HW division would you expect to knock out Duffee clean in 17 seconds?
Not afraid to nitpick
It depends – does Duffee come in with that same strategy of just James Thompsoning until he gets KO’d? In that case I would expect a ton of guys to do that to him.

Early on in the fight, Zaromskis was clearly more on point and was moving in and out with punches. The announcers said Sakuraba was cut somewhere, and they briefly stopped to look at his caulifour ear which was cut open. After letting the fight continue for a little longer, it was clear that Sakuraba was getting outpointed, and his ear kept spewing blood. After the fight was called, the announcers kept saying that part of his ear was ripped away from his head, but his head was wrapped in a full bandage before any more of it could be seen. It was pretty disgusting to say the least, and I couldn’t help but feel bad for him when he addressed the crowd afterwards in that condition.
by mizunopro on Dec 31, 2010 3:18 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
You can see his ear hanging off here for a second.

Very poor quality though. Few seconds before that, before Sakuraba comes back into the corner, and just after he gets up to his feet, you can kind of see his ear flapping back and forth for a second or so too.

2011: year of The Reem
Try to spin this as much as you want, the way he demolished Duffee should send a message.
Please get him to the UFC. (After he does away with Fedor, Werdum and Silva).
..!..
Lol sorry bud but like other people have been saying. The UFC HW division is dead again. dont be surprised to see heavy weights moving over to SF because its going to happen.
Unfortunately for the UFC, I think SF’s HW division is looking better that the UFC’s.
Don’t get me wrong, Cain and JDS are beasts, but Cain being sidelined for most of next year and Carwin recovering from surgery leaves JDS in limbo.
and how is this different from the past while Overeem had a broken hand, Fedor was in negotiations, or when Overeem was doing K1, Fedor was in negotiations, and Werdum was recovering from surgery?
People need to stop jumping to conclusions about the HW division every time something happens.
I am not jumping to conclusions. I’m simply stating that currently, the UFC’s HW division is in limbo and that, IMO, SF’s HW division seems slightly better. That is all.
It’s not like SF is putting together a ton of fights either. Instead of medical issues you’ve got guys ducking each other and renegotiating their contract after every fight.
"an excellent example of why most MMA "journalism" is a joke. Pseudonyms like "toxic" and shitty writing like that dopey article"--- Joe Rogan.
it’s funny how often conversations about fights devolves into org comparisons. the amazing thing about Overeem this year is how self-directed and confident he’s been as a fighter, in and outside of the ring. I doubt he would be the same fighter in the UFC.
rather than wishing Overeem in the UFC i’d prefer to wish more fighters had the kind of initiative and drive to fight at a consistently high level outside the UFC.

Unlike every other division the best HW’s on a whole are outside the UFC. The exposing of Brock did a bunch. It also exposed Frank Mir.

Fedor didn't get exposed
I think rational fight fans see that he had a lapse in judgement or underestimated Werdum’s submissions. Did a lapse in judgement cause Brock to not be able to handle getting jabbed in the face? Mir on the other hand evidentally had a lapse in judgement three times when it comes to fighters that are stronger then him. Nice try

is some nasty stuff. Shame the fight had to end like that.
I watched the the fights live on HDnet this morning and Jienotsu’s KO of Aoki caused me to jump out of my seat and spill beer on my carpet.
Also, Bob Sapp did not fight on the card because he, and I quote, “Lost the will to fight.”
Fool me once…
He has to actually fight in the UFC first
I just don’t see him giving up the freedom to fight who and where he wants for as much money as he can get for 3 fights a year “against the best” when he already thinks he is the best.
He may care about his legacy and all that more than Fedor does but I don’t think he sees the UFC as something he has to do to be an all time great, he wants to continue fighting K-1, he wants to continue being a god in Japan and he seems to only come state side when the payday fits.
