StikeForce's heavyweight tournament could result in a shift of dominance in a marquee division. Unfortunately the proposed heavyweight tournament has widely been viewed with skepticism due the the inactivity of the proposed fighters involved. In order to gauge the accuracy of this claim I have compiled a list of the eight proposed tournament competitors and the eight top ranked UFC fighters (according to USAT/SBNation's Consensus Rankings) sorted by activity in the last three years.
Fighter Name |
Organization |
Activty |
| Alistair Overeem | StrikeForce | 8 |
| Brendan Schaub | UFC | 8 |
| Cain Velasquez | UFC | 7 |
| Junior dos Santos | UFC | 7 |
| Antonio Silva | StrikeForce | 7 |
| Brett Rogers | StrikeForce | 7 |
| Roy Nelson | UFC | 7 |
| Brock Lesnar | UFC | 6 |
| Fabricio Werdum | StrikeForce | 6 |
| Frank Mir | UFC | 6 |
| Andrei Arlovski | StrikeForce | 6 |
| Josh Barnett | StrikeForce | 6 |
| Shane Carwin | UFC | 5 |
| Fedor Emelianenko | StrikeForce | 5* |
| Antonio Nogueira | UFC | 4 |
| Sergei Khartinov | StrikeForce | 2 |
*As of January 1, 2011 Fedor Emelianenko will have fought 4 times in the last 3 years.
UFC Avg: 6.25
StrikeForce Avg: 5.875
I have to say I am very surprised in the small discrepancy between activity levels in the test group, the UFC top 8, and the tournament participants. However, I have to question StrikeForce's judgment with their inclusion of Sergei Khartinov. With only two fights and a 1-1 record in the last three years, I do not believe he is compelling or worthy of thecompetition. This would be a great chance to test one of StrikeForce's in house products such as Daniel Cormier or Lavar Johnson.
It is important to note I am not taking into account the complications surrounding the participation of several fighters such as Mr. Emelianenko or Mr. Overeem. This is merely a quick study of the activity of prospective tournament participants.
