Its high tech shit

There’s a lot of weight restricted sports where cardio isn’t an issue. Like weight lifting. These guys cut weight like NASA builds spacecraft. They know the exact amount they can cut and still perform. They do a bunch of practice cuts to get their bodies used to it. The real kicker is the rehydration and refueling process. They use IV full of high tech glucose solutions that carb load and swell the body while rehydrating. That’s how Gleison Tibau makes 155 then fights at 183 the next night.

That is absolutely what they do

GSP cuts 22-25 pounds over the 24 hours prior to weigh-in.

True weight cutting (i.e. dehydration/rehydration) entails dropping the weight starting about 24 hours prior to weigh-in and immediately putting it back on.

I actually don’t think that would be a bad thing. I read somewhere that Vince and Dana attempt to remain somewhat respectful of one another’s business but I think if Vince is really losing a lot of revenue to the UFC, he could purchase StrikeForce, inject some capital into it and see what happens. The wwe is already the standard as far as building fighters, and production values so who knows how that would turn out

by disinferno06 on Dec 26, 2010 5:11 PM EST up reply actions

The problem with that is Vince's name

Because of his notoriety from his WWE business he needs to find a way to make sure people take his MMA promotion seriously. Maybe he could leave the current management in place but change the direction of the company and add to its production … Good idea but don’t know if it will ever happen.

I agree. He has the capital to help boost some things in Strikeforce but not the know how. And I’m not sure if he’s the kind of guy to let other people run his businesses, whether he knows what he’s doing or not. However, if he were to purchase Strikeforce and leave a large portion of their staff intact, he would do well I believe. He isn’t the passive person that Coker is, so he wouldn’t get the run around from the fighters. But he has the business acumen to build Strikeforce and truly make it an independent global entity

by disinferno06 on Dec 26, 2010 6:07 PM EST up reply actions

Vince McMahon really doesn’t know anything else besides professional wrestling. Everytime that Vince has tried to branch out of professional wrestling, he has failed as shown with his bodybuilding organization, the XFL, and the WWE produced movies don’t do very well either. He even says in interviews that he doesn’t sleep. At this stage of his life and how long he’s been in the business of professional wrestling, I don’t think he can nor wants to do anything else even with all the money that he has.

Dana and the UFC just wouldn’t be able to put Vince and WWE out of business even if they tried. While there are fans of professional wrestling that go to MMA and don’t watch professional wresting anymore, WWE has a sustained audience and hardcore fans that won’t give up professional wrestling and watch WWE religiously. As appealing as real fighting is to fake fighting, some people just like the fake stuff better than the real stuff (True story. I have a friend that just has no interest in MMA but enjoys professional wrestling). Also, WWE is pretty much synonymous with professional wrestling these days, and while ratings and PPV buyrates are down, it still makes money from other revenue streams like dvd, toy sales and merchandise.

by Ally007 on Dec 26, 2010 5:34 PM EST reply actions

Hardy's record looks so odd

A fight with the champ squeezed in between a bunch of fights with midcard guys.

Get knocked out, then sign a fight with anthony johnson… not the best career choice.

by Hendo_One-Shot on Dec 26, 2010 6:12 PM EST reply actions

What’s he supposed to do? Fight a submission expert or an up and coming grinder?

I agree that AJ definitley has the potential to knock his block off, but there’s a5 pretty good upside to this. Fighting a strong grappler could just have him on his back again for fifteen minutes, which is really the worst case scenario for Hardy. Even getting violently knocked out is better than getting laid on for fifteen minutes, for Dan specifically. Plus, lets not forget that a severely dehydrated AJ will not only make him slow and sluggish, but more susceptible to being knocked out himself.

I don't understand the Rumble hype

He’s a wrestler who’s a power puncher. That’s it. Hardy is way more technical on the feet striking. By Hardy’s own admission he went head hunting against Condit when he felt a good shot connect early on. Hardy’s a smart guy and won’t make that mistake again.

If Rumble takes it to the ground, then we have a more interesting fight in terms of unknowns.

by KJ Gould on Dec 26, 2010 6:56 PM EST reply actions

Johnson is a great striker. Better than Hardy? That’s debatable. Koshceck is a wrestler who is a power puncher.

And Koscheck got jabbed into surgery by GSP.

Johnson being a better striker then Hardy shouldn’t even be remotely debatable. He’s not.

What does that have to do with anything? To say it’s “not even remotely debatable” is hilarious

I think his striking abilities go beyond just “a wrestler who’s a power puncher”. He did knock out Kevin Burns with a head kick.

by KAN0 on Dec 26, 2010 7:19 PM EST up reply actions

Johnson is a legit wrestler with some nasty power and speed. The power could largely be attributed to the fact that he’s essentially two weight classes above everyone he fights.

by dreamers_12345 on Dec 26, 2010 7:23 PM EST up reply actions

his defensive bjj is bad though

his sanshou inspired and cung le trained striking is his best feature, it wasnt long ago that people were saying that he could stand with GSP

as long as rumble’s dieting and training bjj he has tons of potential, hes still fairly young

by milk72 on Dec 26, 2010 7:26 PM EST up reply actions

It’d be interesting to really see how Johnson’s BJJ is coming along. He got choked out in the Kos fight but he appeared completely gassed by that point. Which just reminded me of one of his biggest potential holes. Cutting so so much weight as he does clearly has an effect on his conditioning which in a high-paced, grappling-heavy fight, the longer the fight goes on the worse for him.

by dreamers_12345 on Dec 26, 2010 7:32 PM EST up reply actions

yea i think he'd be better off at middleweight

theres simply too many grapplers at ww with guys like rick story, mike pyle, ellenberger, paulo thiago and nate diaz who are all roughly at the same place as him in the division

its a much easier road for him at mw to go up, be more comfortable, and do what everyone else does and call out either bisping or wandy

I like Rumble at Middleweight as well. He is a good height, and it’s not like he’d be a small Middleweight either. With Welterweight, one also has to question Rumble’s cardio.
As far as this fight against Hardy is concerned, I can see Rumble winning this if he uses his wrestling. In the striking department, Hardy is better, but Rumble does have the power and good enough skill to catch him. I am not a fan of Dan Hardy at all, and I am a big fan of Rumble, so I hope that Rumble wins this one (and makes weight).

Hardy’s a smart guy and won’t make that mistake again.

I think that you’re overestimating Hardy’s fighting IQ. He wasn’t just headhunting, he was throwing the same left hook repeatedly and got spotted. Earlier in his career he was also making stupid decisions (like clinching and stalling after he rocked Swick).

I like rumble to but.......

he needs to go to 185 hardy as well. they both cut alot of weight to fight at 170.

by BIGNAT on Dec 26, 2010 7:33 PM EST up reply actions

i think hardy still has a place at 170

hes still one of the top end strikers plus hes never had problems cutting weight. And has a couple good matchups lined up, if he wins i see him getting a guy on the level of the nate diaz-kim winner, or someone like mike pyle which is are interesting fights

hardys not getting a title shot anytime soon at either 185 or 170 so its in his best interest to try and get some cool matchups which i think he’ll do better at 170 then at 185

by milk72 on Dec 26, 2010 7:39 PM EST up reply actions

yeah but that limits

the amount of fights either of them can do in a year. from all the weigth cutting i think both of them should try middle weight they would do good. hardy better than johnson though.

by BIGNAT on Dec 26, 2010 7:51 PM EST up reply actions

Diaz is an effective striker with an iron chin

Who is lightyears beyond Hardy in the grappling department. Compare their bouts with Marcus Davis. Hardy was lucky to escape with a split decision and was getting ouwrestled. Diaz beat the hell out of him before going to the ground for the finish. I don’t see Hardy hype lasting much longer. The most impressive thing about him is how well the UFC was able to convince people that he was top 10.

thats not really a fair comparison

styles make fights and i had davis actually beating hardy, i just think diaz is better suited for a guy like davis than hardy is. i think hardy is a pretty decent matchup for diaz and a bunch of guys at 170 hes a good striker with mediocre tdd and grappling skills, i dont really think diaz would be able to get that fight to the ground due to hardys pretty significant size advantage and it’d turn into a striking match with hardy probably having an advantage

hardys not gonna beat many wrestlers at 170, but hes a quality guy in the division and brings a nice set of skills to the octagon

Jesus, if his walking weight is 220+

and he’s already missed weight a few times, just fight at middleweight! I just can’t fathom how he would be in better shape cutting to 170 than cutting to 185. At some point, the cut goes from beneficial to detrimental, and the numbers difference just makes me intuitively think its too much. With a 6’-1" height he also has the frame to hang at MW…and inject some much needed mid tier talent.

by Cocytus on Dec 26, 2010 7:30 PM EST reply actions   2 recs

Here here. Just stop punishing yourself and go to middleweight. He has absolutely no chance of beating GSP, and the weight cut is always going to be an issue. When you cut like him, the smallest little thing is going to make him lose weight. And fighting at MW is going to feel like a vacation compared to WW.

by Dooda on Dec 26, 2010 8:30 PM EST up reply actions

I wonder what makes people so reluctant about going to MW. Both Hardy and AJ have the frames to be there and it’s the lest wrestling heavy division, so it should feel like a natuaral move.

Yeah...protect you thumb...it's the only thing that differentiates you from the monkey...

Rumble is a bit of a myth really. His record makes Hardy’s look like Shogun’s.

by Sink on Dec 26, 2010 7:31 PM EST reply actions   1 recs

Normally I’d be stoked for his fight, but I hate it when guys come off of long layoffs to fight a really sharp high-level guy. I think that Hardy takes this one. Coming off of two intense matches in Condit and GSP, and absolutely crazy for a win, I think Hardy takes this one in the first round or two. But I’m looking forward to it, and might even splurge to see it here in Seattle.

by Dooda on Dec 26, 2010 8:28 PM EST reply actions

Something awesome can come out of a Rumble loss here.

If Johnson loses, it could potentially set up a fight between Rumble and Doomsday. They’d both be coming off of losses and that would be one hell of a fight.

by Kyle Overeem on Dec 26, 2010 8:47 PM EST reply actions

Personally I don’t think he has enough skill. Some fighter are good wrestlers, great submission artists, technical boxers, and AJ’s skill is the ability to cut insane amounts of weight(most of the time). I’ve heard he has never gone to a BJJ class in his life so really he needs the huge size and strength advantage to win fights.

Speaking of Hathaway, what’s your opinion of London Shoot as a camp? Tbh I really don’t think they’re international calibre and I’d much rather see him go elsewhere. They do okay on the domestic circuit, but never seem quite ready for world-class competition…

I agree

Although I’m hoping hardy isn’t already on a slippery slope. No more headhunting from Hardy and he could beat Johnson quite easily in my opinion.
As for Shootfighters, I’d say as far as a wrestling base he has done well, as we saw in the Story fight. If he could make the journey back and forth between Rough house and Shootfighters, I think he’d really benefit. Although I see your point. Other fighters they have produced don’t exactly give much hope. Take Alex Reid as a prime example.

by MJB! on Dec 29, 2010 3:01 PM EST up reply actions

I don't think Ring Rust will keep Johnson from blasting Hardy in the first round

Hardy likes to strike, Johnson likes to strike and has dynamite in his hands.

Johnson has a background in wrestling. Hardy isn’t going to outwrestle him.

I also doubt Hardy’s jiu jitsu will be good enough to sub Johnson.

Hardy, in my opinion, got overrated very quickly and tossed into a title shot he didn’t deserve, as most post-title fight losers do, he automatically is getting tougher competition than before the title fight…and as the Condit fight showed, he just doesn’t have enough to cut it.

One of the biggest ‘eye-roll’ moments for me was when Dana White always said that Dan Hardy’s standup was ‘perfect’…I’ll see that lie and raise you one Carlos Condit, Mr White.
