Paul Daley Responds to Gilbert Melendez Challenge, Prefers Cung Le or Cyborg Santos
Last week Bloody Elbow's own Duane Finley interviewed Strikeforce lightweight champ Gilbert Melendez who called out welterweight Paul Daley.
Now Paul Daley has responded on the UG:
Gilbert Melendez has called me out. Says he'll fight at 170lbs.
I'm down, but i know i will get negative feedback from the MMA Media for fighting a Lightweight...again, despite having KO/TKO'd 2 middleweights in my past 3 fights (Acacio and Smith)
So still we have a problem, what i want is another fight in between fighting Diaz, a fight that makes sense and qualifies me, for fighting for the Strikeforce WW title.
This is a sequel to a previous post on the UG by Daley where he listed his preferred next opponent:
1st) KJ, But...KJ Dont want it.
2nd) Cyborg is game, would take that fight. Would be an exciting tough fight for the fans.
3rd) Cung Lee at a Catch weight?
4th) Nick Diaz, for a summer title showdown. These are the ONLY IMMEDIATE (Next 6 months) fights i am interested and will SIGN for STRIKEFORCE.
Daley is coming off a first round KO win over Scott Smith at Strikeforce: Henderson vs Babalu 2 on December 4.

Shit. Daley really doesn’t want to fight Gil because he is gonna get grapplefucked. Again.

Daley is more one dimensional than a piece of paper. That being said his one dimension is outstanding. Would love to see him fight Lawler at a catchweight. Callig nout Noons and his broken jaw is weak. Diaz subs him. Cyborg cmon. If Zaromskis beats Saku I would love that matchup.

Melendez is unquestionably a better wrestler than Masvidal
And if Masvidal had a little more gas and did a little more GnP he’d have beat Daley. Some people think he deserved the decision.
It's like the Smith fight made everybody forget about the Masvidal fight

OHHHHH! OH MY GOODNESS DID YOU SEE THAT?! He ran up the wall like a ninja and landed a high kick! Unbelievable! I've never seen anything like that, it's like something out of a movie!

Daley won the Masvidal fight
On a night that he didn’t have his best stuff. Daley’s record over the past five fights:
Win – Smith (KO)
Win – Masvidal (UD – people arguing for Masvidal winning that fight are out of their minds or have an axe to grind)
Win – Acaciao (Sub – Strikes)
Loss – Kos
Win – Haslett (KO)
Win – Kampman (KO)
Which, frankly, makes Gil’s last six look like a bucket of shit.
Now Gil does present a crappy style matchup for Daley, but to say that he’d be able to easily wrestle-hump Semtex to a UD win is silly. Meanwhile, I don’t fault Daley at all for looking to book himself entertaining fights that present a clear path to Nick Diaz. Those are the fights that I want to see too.

I'm not saying Daley lost
But when a natural lightweight who doesn’t have any wrestling background nor shown much wrestling in earlier fights is able to take Daley down, win one round, and get close in another, then Melendez poses all kinds of problems.
You don’t have to be Koscheck or Shields to put Daley on his back and win the fight. As far as we can tell, all you need is a slightly stronger ground game than Masvidal along with the ability to avoid getting KO’d.
along with the ability to avoid getting KO’d.
that’s kind of a big “along with.”

Daley does want Melendez. He went on to say this later in the thread:
Melendez, lets do this 170lbs, Strikeforce, March, Ohio show. Im down, as long as Strikeforce give me the 170lbs title shot after i beat you. (No trash talk)
Think your one of the very best 155lbs in the world, your the champion and i respect that, you got a great all action style, of wrestling and boxing and i think a fight between us will be an entertaining one for the fans.
Agreed
Over fast, but still awesome. I have no reason to believe Daley-Cyborg doesn’t end in the same way, and at the same speed that Daley-Smith ended.

Um. Smith moved down to 170 for that fight dude. And Noons ain’t ducking you. He’s medically suspended with a broken jaw right now. Rich Chou must have been talking to Daley about Cyborg because he wanted nothing to do with him a week ago.
Didn't Noons say he didn't want the Daley fight?
And didn’t he also say Daley didn’t deserve to fight him? Sounds a little duck-y.

Daley vs Cyborg. Daley vs Le. Daley vs Manhoef. Daley vs Diaz. Daley vs Noons.

Same here.
Manhoef has a disturbing amount of power and great technique. I’d love that fight with Daley but I don’t see it happening. Daley is focusing on Welterweight it seems and Manhoef is a middleweight.

Should Daley really be making statements about the ONLY guys he’ll fight though? After all of one fight in Strikeforce?

I suppose this is constructive. Do you correct everyone like that, or are you honestly trying to offer insight to someone who is trying to put out a quality [comment]? I’m just asking. I ask because it’s my duty to correct those who think it keen to correct everyone they see…if you’re being constructive though, no problems here.

Ok, couple things here.
1. I’m just joking with him, he put it out there that he made a mistake and it seemed kind of funny the way he did, so I was jokingly “helping him out.” He did, in fact, spell two words wrong and did indeed have an incomplete sentence, but I’m not troubled with other peoples’ grammar. I’m an editor and a writer, I deal with that shit all day. I don’t need to bring my work with me.
2. So to answer the other part, no, I most definitely not correct everyone I see, never will. There’s three times I ever actually correct someone. A. They are correcting someone else for no apparent reason and made a mistake themselves, which appears to be what you’re making sure I’m not doing, which is amicable (unless you’re making fun of me because I said the same thing you just said before on Bloody Elbow) and all. B. I’m working and doing my job. C. The person appears to care about their spelling and grammar and misuse a word or two, if I feel like they’d appreciate it, I’ll point it out.
3. As I noted in parenthesis … are you making fun of me, because " I ask because it’s my duty to correct those who think it keen to correct everyone they see…" is basically exactly a sentence I’ve used on here before in the same situation.
And then God created Saturn... and he liked it, so he put a ring on it.

and four
4. I don’t always use proper grammar, as there’s about … fourteen errors in the above comment (mine) that I would not let pass during the editorial process.
And then God created Saturn... and he liked it, so he put a ring on it.

Saw a post above mentioning Daley vs. Manhoef. That would be an awesome matchup I’d definitely be interested in watching between two powerful strikers. Just too bad Lawler KO’d Manhoef out of the picture.

In Strikeforce, a Melendez win WOULD qualify him to fight for the belt.
If Daley were to beat Melendez then they could put out commercials about how Daley demolished Diaz’s teammate and now Diaz is seeking revenge, etc. so that they wouldn’t have to work very hard on selling the fight. However, I wouldn’t blame Daley for fighting Cyborg instead, as he a) has a recent relevant win at WW and b) has a style that matches up better with Daley’s.
OHHHHH! OH MY GOODNESS DID YOU SEE THAT?! He ran up the wall like a ninja and landed a high kick! Unbelievable! I've never seen anything like that, it's like something out of a movie!

cyborg vs daley would be entertaining as all hell. then give the winner diaz. i go home happy.
It surprises me how the Henderson vs Babalu fallout really warmed up some MMA fans to the Strikeforce product in that there are MMA fans out there that are actually excited to see different matchups with Daley whether it be against the male Cyborg, Noons, Le, Melendez or Diaz. Personally, if Tarec Saffiedine beats Tyron Woodley, I would like to see Saffiedine vs Daley. Maybe 2011 will actually be a good year for Strikeforce.

There's only one UFC
Hell, even in the NBA and NHL, if your employer doesn’t buckle to your demands then you just give him the finger and go to another team or Euroleague/KHL.
Strikeforce doesn’t have that power. Almost nothing the UFC does can be applied to Strikeforce. If you swap Coker and White, all the big fighters leave SF and it becomes less relevent than Bellator.
To enjoy Strikeforce, get used to the fact that it isn't the UFC
As an organization, Strikeforce has a smaller roster, and far fewer bookable stars. Daley is one of a handful of highly-ranked, highly charismatic guys in the entire promotion. He’s going to get a little leeway to determine the fights he takes.
Despite that, SF manages to put on some very entertaining, competitive fights. Let go and enjoy.
