MMA in 2010 Retrospective, Georges St. Pierre vs. Anderson Silva Discussion on The Fight Fix
Host Dustin Green of Comcast SportsNet in Washington, DC and I sit down to discuss what the highlights and lowlights were for MMA (and a little boxing) in the year 2010.
After talking to Josh Gross and Jordan Breen last night, it was clear the number of ways you could view events and actions in either category was without limit. I'd also note I forgot as a highlight for 2010 the return of Brock Lesnar. There are probably more I never even considered.
So, what were your MMA highlights and lowlights in 2010? What did I miss and what deserves to be called out in either category? List them in the comments.
You can also see The Fight Fix at CSNWashington.com.
SBNation and Comcast SportsNet are proud to bring you The Fight Fix here on SBNation.com/MMA and BloodyElbow.com every week.

The Bearded One goes the distance this week! 10/10
I thought 112 was a pretty bad day for MMA, but I think I’d put more weight behind some of the bad judging we’ve had of late and multiple promotions not paying fighters or paying them months after the fight.
I think it’s worse because 1) it’s happening to guys who are either late in their careers and need money or those who are just starting and need the money. It could also give promotions that are up and coming a hard time to sell to these guys the chance to fight for them.
It's official. Les Miles DOES NOT have a deal with the devil. He beat him Nov. 6th, 24-21.
this fight won't happen.. & if it does st.pi eew will get f#cked up

I'm glad you called out Sonnen
that litany of nonsense he spewed at the CSAC is going to come back to haunt him, hopefully.

If what he and his doctor testified to under oath is accurate, then he has a legit need and should be granted a TUEC. If they lied, they should be prosecuted for perjury.
.
TRT is not really workable in MMA under the current testing methods and criteria, although to be fair, had Sonnen not taken a shot the day before the test (assuming he stopped 4 or so weeks out), it probably wouldn’t have shown, particularly if he used hCG after he stopped up until just before testing time.
For TRT to be able to be used as prescribed and intended without the possibility of using it to cheat, TUEC approval should be contingent on the fighter having blood tests performed by an approved lab every 2-4 weeks year-around (at the fighter’s expense) to monitor actual testosterone levels.

My highlights were definitely all the great fights and moments within them. Of course, Ninjakick Pettis! Seeing Chan Sung Jung vs. Leonard Garcia was a treat. Peter Aerts beating Semmy was amazing. Also, Roger Huerta doing the right thing always made me really proud to be an MMA fan.
I think the lowlights were Anderson Silva’s debacle at 112, Paul Daley’s sucker punch, Koscheck’s trash talk, Mirko Cro Cop hitting his twilight very hard, and finally, seeing one of my favorite all-time fighters, Ken Shamrock, just implode in front of our eyes with each fight. He really needs to find a new way of making a living.

Speaking of guys who've cleaned out divisions
Cruz/Aldo anyone? Might be a while before they really finish housekeeping.

Aldo only has Grispi left before he’s basically gutted the division.
Cruz has Torres/Faber.
They are both in similar situations as GSP and Anderson though with less title defenses. GSP has Shield’s left. Any other challengers would be repeats. Anderson has Vitor and possibly Okami to negate the loss on his record due to DQ.
I think Mendes could give Aldo some problems. He’s a far better wrestler than Brown and also seems to be an excellent athlete. Although effective, his top game is extremely dull though, so I’m not exactly rooting for him to upset Aldo if he fights him. He’s probably one fight away.

Yeah, that's about how I see it.
Plus, it would be an awesome superfight, even taking into account that 90% of fans would be like “Who vs. Who?”

Surprised the Nashville brawl wasn't mentioned...
…in the worst of 2010. Shameful stuff from everyone involved.
I did
I think it got cut in the editing.

lol sorry
BJ Penn losing the title after being considered the dominant force in the division by virtually 100% of observers.
I always find it interesting when a champion is taken out in his prime.
in fact
I feel as though the changes in the lightweight division in general should be considered a top story of 2010.
The fall of BJ Penn, the rise of Edgar, the shaky return of Gomi, Aoki losing to Melendez, G. Sot coming on to the scene as a potential Australian super star and champion.
The lightweight rankings now look remarkably different than the lightweight rankings before.
*shrug, maybe I’m putting too much emphasis on it. LW has always been my favourite division.

Good stuff.
Silva/St. Pierre would be so awesome. I just hope the UFC doesn’t wait too long to make it. Not too long ago, I think most would have said that Silva would be in less danger of diminishing the luster of a match with Georges by sustaining a loss. That doesn’t look to be the case anymore. I am excited to see Silva Belfort and maybe even a second fight with Sonnen. With St. Pierre, I really want to see him demolish Shields. Shields has proven me wrong a few times, but I still don’t believe him to be the force that some believe he is. He just seems to be on the cusp of losing far too often.
I don’t really see what the point is, for sure not the entertainment factor, I think it would be boring.

It's a touch worrying
That someone can’t “really see the point” of having the best two mixed martial artists in the world fight.

i dont want to see this fight either, to me it would be the most over hyped boring fight. think about it for a while and how both of thier styles won’t match up for a good fight. i would bet all my star wars guys except boba fett that its a snoozer, no ko’s or subs, either anderson on his back or gsp flustered by andersons reach and the return of the thai clinch.
and i’ will bet it goes 5rds
