I'm at the point where if I see someone doing rubber guard on the bottom
I automatically assume they’re going to lose. I can’t think of a single example of a guy in the UFC who used rubber guard to great effect and won his fight.

The only name that comes to mind when I think of a somewhat effective rubberguard is BJ Penn. Although I don’t know if it has ever enabled him to finish a fight using it.
Best Fighters: 1.Brock Lesnar 2.Nate Diaz 3.Tito Ortiz 4.Tank Abbot 5.Jamie Varner
Best Camps: 1.Team Punishment 2.Death Clutch 3.Cesar Gracie

BJ uses a high guard that resembles the rubber guard but the flexibility that makes it seem otherwise..
John Danaher did a pretty sick breakdown for NSAC during greasegate talking about BJ not being a practitioner of the rubber guard calling it an algorithmic grapplic approach (because as you can see it’s step by step, do this then do that) as opposed to BJ using an opportunistic approach hence not following the sequences invented by bravo to set up sweeps or pins.

If the round is too close, it's 10-10, NOT flip a coin 10-9 or late takedown FTW.

I remember diaz winning by gogoplata, forgot in what fight tho
Anyway, that’s the kind of move they use mostly to force their opponent to do something else or change position; I guess it works, if not they would’n’t do it.

Diaz/Gomi, which was in PRIDE.

GIF?
I’m having a hard time remembering any fights where he was really successful with it.

I can't find any good ones on the web yet.
I’m gonna pop in some of my UFC DVDs and make one soon.
Till then.

Also I like this rubberguard takedown to heel hook.

Both Carlos Condit and George Sotiropolous.....
…have used it as a defensive guard when they are on the bottom. Carlos used it in the first and (I believe) second rounds of his fight against Rory Mcdonald, and it arguably allowed him to get to the third round where he pounded out Rory.
Sotiropolous used it in his bouts against Kurt Pellegrino and Joe Stevenson.
I think at this point in the rubber guards evolution it is most successfully used as a defensive guard. I know that Eddie touts it as being an offensive guard but against powerful opponents no one has been able to hold them in the clinch for long enough to apply a submission.
I'll give you Sotiropolous, completely forgot him.
Penn is another name that was mentioned but I’m not entirely convinced he’s been successful with rubber guard. Against Hughes he swept him from Octopus guard IIRC and was completely ineffective from his back against both GSP and Edgar with the rubber guard. I haven’t seen Condit/Rory recently enough to comment, but I do remember him clearly losing the first and second so I’m not sure that’s a match worth touting.
I’ll agree with the idea that it could be somewhat useful from a purely defensive standpoint, but with refs being hesitant to stand fighters up from the ground that often all it means is that the guy on the bottom is losing in a different way. Not seeing an advantage to using rubber guard.

I cant recall a UFC fight that it has been used effectively except for the aforementioned ones
But Shinya Aoki has used it offensively very effectively over in Japan.

Right?
I thought he had some weird contacts in, but at the end his buddy and the dog both have terminator eyes…must be the spotlight on the video camera.

I think that the rubber guard is still in the infant stages of being implemented into MMA, but I could see it being very effective in a couple of years for guys that have been training at 10th planet and put the time in. Some of Eddie’s techniques are awesome to watch and I really hope that we get to see those kinds of sick subs in MMA at some point.
Random puppy bulldog(?) attack FTW!
I literally laughed out loud when that happened at the beginning of the video.

I'm kinda sick of
Rubber Guard showing it’s not a high percentage guard, then Eddie running to the flip cam to say how it’s the fighter’s fucking it up, not the system.
It’s not a high percentage guard, Eddie.

of course it is, look at how many 10th planet guys own the podium at adcc and worlds year after year…..
.. crickets
Exactly.
Leave the conspiracy crap, horrid music, and the pot-activism out of his schtick, and he’s a guy who’s living off of one victory(not using his epic “System”) and giving stupid names to positions he ripped off of Nino Schembri.
And he wonders why he’s an outcast, and that Gracie Barra dislikes him.
