For Joe Stevenson, the #17 ranked lightweight in the world per the USAT/SBN Consensus MMA Rankings, this fight was a much needed opportunity to reclaim his place as a gatekeeper to the elite ranks of the division after a one-sided loss to George Sotiropoulos at UFC 110.
For Danzig, this fight was a last chance to hang on in the UFC lightweight division. The winner of the sixth season of The Ultimate Fighter, he's been on the chopping block since dropping three straight in 2008-2009. A win over Justin Buchholz was followed by a submission loss to Matt Wiman that the UFC brass regarded as a dubious call by the ref.
