words cannot describe how much i hate those scripted 'I'M GOING TO RIP HIS HEART OUT' "Interviews" at the beginning

jesus fucking christ. it’s always an ordeal to sit through them until the highlight reels begin.

this whole spiel just gets kind of retarded when you can tell that the one guy needed 25 takes for his spontanous outburst of i’ma-kick-his-assery because he had to get his accent under control and the other guy is bad at acting to an extend that he can’t even believably come across like an asshole.

Machida’s interviews are always gold. The Thiago Silva one was the best when he goes something like “I want the belt and Thiago Silva is in…..my……way” Most unnaturally spoken interview ever!

Yeah. They make the most money but are the cheapest too. Showtime and CBS owns them. Remember the Mousasi King Mo intro? I cant find it anywhere but it was epic.

1:30 Is the intro to the show they always use. IMO its better than numetal crap =/

+1

The UFC intro’s are too predictable. Even the Dream promo’s and posters beat the UFC hands down.

Still have no idea why Alves/Howard isn't the co-main event.

I said I have no idea, the moment I posted I thought to myself “Well, if Alves didn’t make weight they’d have to switch around making Struve/McCorkle look an EVEN WORSE, co-main”. So i suppose we’re in agreement, lol. That was the only thing I could come up with.

don’t get why this is special at all, was hoping that they changed the intro from the idiot gladiator numetal shit but obviously that is not going to happen until someone tweets to Dana that it isnt trending well

Guys it's not a matter of it not being special

What is special is that they’re releasing the opening montage early. But at this point it really needs to be updated. I know this has been used since at least UFC 52 which is crazy.

I cant stand the gladiator chants they use in this. Especially during the Tale of the Tape. I feel like I’m watching an old 90’s clip or something with the outdated music and screaming ladies.

I don't understand all the shit that the gladiator opening intro gets.

Changing stuff just to change it seems like a bad idea to me, especially if you are trying to push and cement a brand. Right now, when you hear the start of that segment, or see that gladiator appear, you know what you are going to get. It is a part of the UFC identity. Improving the quality of the segment, I can understand, but to just get rid of it would be pretty stupid at this point in time.

Lets be real, I really doubt they would lose fans over changing it. I actually think they stand to gain some fans by upping the quality and perception that hey, this is a real sporting event. To us it is, but to the casual out there they see WWE. Im always talking MMA at work and get people telling me its like wrestling or some freak stuff. =(

Let HBO or the goddamn WWE get their hands on a UFC intro and you'll be thinking this current..

“Gladiator” is utter crap and ridiculously outdated.

It’s like the UFC is stuck in the 1940’s and they refuse to evolve.

No matter what they do, someone is going to think it sucks. Changing the intro is a huge deal, and doing that in the middle of aggressive expansion would be a bad idea. So the best idea is to keep the same intro, which is iconic for the UFC.

Guillotine.

by iiowyn on Dec 11, 2010 6:26 PM EST up reply actions

Dude, the intro blows and the only reason they don’t change it is because their in-house production team has no original ideas and they’re too cheap to create distinctive intros for each event.

The Gladiator intro....

is so bad it hurts my eyes watching it. I still don’t understand why they keep this shit on the air? I thought they wanted to get away from the “human cockfighting” image? Roman Gladiators battled to the DEATH! These are trained professional athletes/martial artists’ not slaves who are forced to fight to the death for their freedom. What if (god forbid) someone died in the UFC cage? The media would be all over that shit and use that intro as ammunition in their fight to ban the sport.

that MMA isn’t about guys beating each other to death like some ancient savage showdown. When I finally get them to watch a UFC with me, what do they see first? The fucking gladiator. For fuck’s sake, please get rid of that opening!

by pud333 on Dec 11, 2010 1:45 PM EST reply actions

That intro just pumped me up like there is no 2morrow..Cant freakin wait baby!!!! BTW If they changed the music everyone would be complaining that is worse than the one they have now… bitch , bitch , bitch… I think we tune in to watch the fights anyway.,not to listen to the intro…

by #1 piggy on Dec 11, 2010 1:47 PM EST reply actions

They would have to try REEALLY hard

To get a replacement song that’s worse than the current one. Pretty much anything different would be an improvement, honestly.

Maybe that opening gets some people hyped up for the fights, but to me it just starts to turn me off because of how cheesy and low-budget it is.

um guess im in the minority

But is hate to see them change the opening montage unless they found something equal or better. The gladiator theme gives it an epic feel and I dont even like new metal but I could see myself listening to that song even if i wasn’t gonna watch a ufc ppv. My point is everyone has their calling card/trademark and this is the ufc’s. It’d be stupid to switch it up just for the sake of switching it up.

by liquidation247 on Dec 11, 2010 1:52 PM EST via mobile reply actions

i'm with you

this sport is totally about two guys beating each other up, and that’s why we love it and why we complain about boring decisions. this basic premise is epic, the skill just makes it the best place in the world to find it. the nu-metal could perhaps be changed if they can find some kind of epic original song, but i think the rest is great.

by Trust Doesn't Rust on Dec 11, 2010 2:34 PM EST up reply actions

It's cheesy but essentially true imo.

Every single person attending or watching that event would like to see one guy unconscious, face-planted, on the floor. It’s not as extreme as the old gladiator-battles of course, but the closest thing in modern society to gladiator-fighting.

That would cost them a lot.

Putting it on the DVDs would be too expensive too. Notice how they play bullshit muzak over the fighters’ walkout music on the DVD and Blu-ray releases. It’s the one thing that bothers the hell out of me on the UFC 100 Blu-ray and it’s why I won’t buy the Aldo vs Faber one.

Even when I was a complete MMA noob I thought the Gladiator intro was a bit cheesy

After you start seeing how contrived the pre-fight dialogue is sometimes it just gets worse.

I understand us whining about it isn’t going to change it anytime soon (branding and all that) and that it’s a minor issue compared to everything else. I just use that time for last minute bathroom breaks/food runs.
