K-1 World Grand Prix Primer: The Voice Versus Alistair Overeem on HDNet

Alistair Overeem might possibly be on the verge of becoming the next great heavyweight fighter of our generation. While Fedor Emelianenko has held the title as the impenetrable Russian overlord for the last seven to eight years of his career, Overeem has made a strong case in the last two years that he could be ready to take over the reigns for the once unbeaten "Last Emperor". He has yet to overwhelm a top five fighter in the world of mixed martial arts, but his status as a top flight talent in the world of K-1 has translated to many people believing he will dominate the heavyweight division in 2011.

In an exclusive interview with K-1 commentator Michael Schiavello, airing on HDNet tonight at 10:00 PM EST, Overeem, or "The Reem" as many like to call him, opens up about how he got into the sport, who he idolized growing up, and how he sees himself now as a successful K-1 fighter. Schiavello also questions Overeem about the opinion that his enlarged size and appearance over the last five years has been due to steroid use. The answers that Overeem provides to those hard-hitting questions aren't anything we haven't heard before, but Overeem has some unique insight into how he's perceived throughout the MMA community and what it actually means to him.

If you're rearing for some content that will get you in the mood for K-1's World Grand Prix Final, Michael Schiavello's one-on-one with Alistair Overeem is a must see. It's rare that we get to see lengthy in-depth interviews with top fighters in the world, and even more rare to get to know them personally. Love him or hate him, Alistair Overeem is here to stay, and I think this interview should give fans some new found respect for what Overeem has accomplished throughout his career.

Who would hate this guy? He’s an incredibly exciting heavyweight. Voice says this might be the best yet. We’ll see.

I'm beginning to warm up to him but...

The reason i started to dislike him is because he said Cro-cop was faking the nut shots.

Not only was he clearly drilled in the beanbag, a nut was pushed up into his body. Overeem was a prick in that whole situation.

Since then he’s been cool, but that situation really turned me off to the Reem.

I still think CC was looking for a way out.

But you can't deny he got nailed....

To say he was faking it while having a teste up in his body? Who wouldn’t be looking for a way out?

I hope some of Ubereem’s haters take a chance to watch this interview. He’s actually a really cool dude and its hate not to root for him as the sole representative of MMA in K-1. WAR REEM!

His last wins in MMA were Rogers, Fujita, Thompson, Tony Sylvester and Goodridge. Not really sure how those wins warrant him being the new “Emperor”.

Nahh, I love the Reem — I just don’t think he deserves these accolades until he fights a Cain, Dos Santos, Werdum, Lesnar, or a Carwin — hell, just get the monster in the UFC already. Imagine him headlining against Cain or Lesnar? Epic.

Yeah I know I’m just messing with you. I think 2011 is gonna be huuuuuuuuuuge for overeem.

you realize fedor has only fought 1 person out of that list right?

I love Fedor and his kimchi making, you apparently love Fedor more haha. Don’t let that get in the way of liking Overeem imo.

Good point. I like Overeem and he’s an exciting fighter….but his mma resume at heavyweight is severely lacking at the moment. Even Brock, who’s only been fighting a few years, has a far superior mma resume at heavyweight than Overeem. Most of his “aura” at the moment seems to stem from 1) what he’s doing in K1, and 2) being the new mythical heavyweight that would smash everyone in the ufc. That said, I’d still like to see him in the UFC, but I don’t think that’s happening.

Megahorse will work over any heavyweight.

by Spider_Vemon on Dec 10, 2010 10:05 AM EST up reply actions

Possibly, but rather than defer to your authority, I’d kinda like to see him work over a top rated heavyweight before ranking him too highly.

Over the last 3 years,

Brock has an MMA resume superior to almost anyone, Fedor certainly included.

Over the last 3 years - the only time really relevant to the present discussion:

In no particular order:
Fedor Emelianenko is 4-1 with 3 wins over top-10 fighters (Sylvia, Arlovski, Rogers).

Cain Velasquez is 7-0 over the last 3 years, with 2 wins over top-10 guys (Lesnar, Big Nog).

Overeem is 8-0 at heavyweight in MMA over the last 3 years, with one victory over a top-10 heavyweight (Brett Rogers, #8). His only other ranked opponent (Cro Cop at #9) was ruled a NC after Overeem completely dominated the fight on the ground and on the feet before "cracking" Cro Cop’s nads…

Shane Carwin is 5-1 at heavyweight over the last 3 years, with one victory over a top-10 opponent (Mir).

JDS is 7-0 over the last 3 years, with 1 win over a top-10 guy (Werdum).

Lesnar is 4-2 over the last 3 years, with 3 wins over top-10 guys (Couture, Mir, Carwin)

seems Fedor's resume is better according to your analysis

Especially when you consider Carwin was only ranked top ten due to his win over Mir

He also handled and smashed around CroCop a lot easier than a lot of UFC guys (even JDS) did, whatever the eventual outcome.

It disappoints me when some vocal people in cyberspace hide behind a pseudonym and make malicious and baseless attacks against athletes that have never failed a screen for banned substances. These keyboard toxicologists think that they can merely look at an athlete and "know" that so-and-so is a "juicer." There is a term for that. It's called "delusions of grandeur," and medication may help. (Dr. Johnny Benjamin)

Its fun to watch Overeem, no doubt. But its pretty obvious at this point that K1 success does not necessarily translate into MMA success. So using that as a basis for speculation about him being the next great heavyweight is absurd. Also, Reem is going to have to fight the best heavyweights if he is going to be considered the best and he isn’t doing that right now. Even if he picks up a couple more Strikeforce wins, there will always be the question of how he’d stack up to the UFC division. However, this is always going to be an issue given that the HW division is still has one of the more fractured talent pools in the sport.

by 1Mandos1 on Dec 10, 2010 11:06 AM EST reply actions

Let´s be honest and stop comparing things...

the margins in topsport are very small, even Fedor knows it.
One little mistake and it´s over, whether it´s in the UFC or Strikeforce.
Both divisions have talents, but myself giving Strikeforce the edge at the moment.

I only see JDS and Cain as a real threat for Overeem, but once again, it´s all speculation.
Time will tell, but bringing home the K-1 title would be awesome!

Strikeforce VS UFC will be great someday, but UFC has got everything to lose, so DW would be stupid.

Hell, I would forget about the UFC even. Let Overeem go back to Strikeforce and face Fedor, Werdum, Barnett,…..hell even Antonio Silva….then maybe a legitimate debate can take place about how he stacks up overall. Until then, its kinda pointless.

by joshyboy708 on Dec 10, 2010 12:43 PM EST up reply actions

He needs to fight a top HW with strong wrestling to see where he stands in the rankings debate. There is no doubt he is a great striker, but I can’t help thinking he just a bigger version of Paul Daley.

He is a legit grappler

with 19 of his 33 wins via submission. And two of his losses via submission.
