Dana White Says the UFC Has Signed Norifumi "Kid" Yamamoto

For years, Faber vs. Yamamoto has always been that unreachable dream fight, but now it seems like a very real possibility.

Dana White routinely has random conversations with all types of fans on his twitter account, but today there was an interesting tidbit that stood out. He was conversing with someone who was psyched about the signing of Japanese featherweight, Michihiro Omigawa, when the fan mentioned that he hoped they would also get Kid Yamamoto. The UFC president then replied with a simple:

"we did sign kid"

This follows a recent report saying that the long time top featherweight was in negotiations with the UFC, and from the looks of that tweet, seems like it went very well. The article also mentioned that Kid's UFC debut could be as soon as February or March, but that might not be the next time we see him fight, as he is already featured on the poster of Japan's NYE show, Dynamite!! 2010.

We still don't have much details aside from that simple tweet, but if it pushes through, it's still a pretty huge signing. Something that has been long overdue.

read that also.

everything is all so confusing… Wouldn’t be surprised if FEG messed up by adding him to the poster, or if Dana tweeted wrong.

well there's that... haha.

still doesn’t explain the rumors about having 2 more fights though. Apparently, that came from the FEG president on twitter.

Well, if there is any merit to the complaints about Roy Nelson and Jon Brookins having outside obligations yet to be fulfilled, there would appear to be a patter forming here.

I wonder if the photo at the top explains it: he meant they already had signed the California Kid?

Or the obvious

he signed Kid Nate.

Agree with both statements. I am getting excited about the new weight classes being put into the UFC. Curious to see what 155ers will drop weight classes.

Yeah.

This is huge / awesome!! I figured some of these little guys would start making the journey overseas after the merger. Stop paying the little dudes with Monopoly money and BOOM! It makes a big difference.

I’m hoping it’s true but like I wrote earlier I got a feeling he got confused and really meant Michihiro Omigawa. Not going to get excited until there’s some real confirmation. Maybe another tweet.

by John Nash on Dec 10, 2010 4:36 AM EST via mobile reply actions

he was talking to the guy about Omigawa already, so I doubt it's about that.

the conversation was (roughly) like this:
Fan: OOOOOH OMIGAWA!!!
Dana: Glad you’re happy with that.
fan: THAT WAS A GOOD SIGNING, BUT GET KID ALSO!!!!
Dana: We did sign kid.

He’s probably used to answering confused fans questions about what’s going to happen to the WEC.

by John Nash on Dec 10, 2010 4:42 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

Well, it’s clear they’ve been negotiating with Kid, so I think he understood the context.

I don’t anyone’s conversations in the middle of the night.

That being said I it looks like he is signed. Now lets see them book Kid vs California Kid as the co-main for Tokyo.

Like I said, I hope they get him, but I’m getting the feeling that Dana was on a different page when he tweeted that.

by John Nash on Dec 10, 2010 4:45 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

If Dana says he signed "Kid", he signed "Kid".

FEG: Frivolous Entertainment Group

Only bad thing about Kid is that it could be a few years too late. I would have thought he would have been apart of the WEC roster during their tenure.

Oh well. Feed him Leonard, Mike Brown or KZ. Just don’t give him Chad Mendez. Although fighting at 135, not 145, may be more beneficial for him, career-wise — Yamamoto vs Benavidez anyone?

Either way, Kid better bring that fine piece of ass on this side of the pond to distract those judges.

Kid would kill Leonard.

This is why WEC should have folded sooner

And why Kid Yamamoto didn’t sign to start with when a match with Faber was actually interesting and relevant.

Also, are Bellator claiming Brookins can’t fight for UFC? I’m really starting to wish Bellator would implode at this point.

by KJ Gould on Dec 10, 2010 7:57 AM EST reply actions

They had been

Before the season aired. Not sure where that stands at the moment, but it seems that there’s a lot of confusing information floating around (he wasn’t being booked and his agent claims he was granted a “verbal release”).

by Charles Awad on Dec 10, 2010 9:25 AM EST up reply actions

Why, they've produced some awesome fights right?

You gonna hate on em for trying to protect their interests? If they got a legal binding contract on Brookins how are they doing a disservice to MMA?

Wolfgangsta @ www.ninjasplace.com

by Urijah Bieber on Dec 10, 2010 1:37 PM EST up reply actions

the idea of signing people to “exclusive” contracts, then not giving them fights for long periods of time, then issuing verbal releases (brookins isn’t the first person to claim this, so it’s believable), and then trying to reassert their rights after doing nothing to hold up their end of the contract when the fighter gets something going in their career is pretty shitty for the sport.

by Phildo on Dec 10, 2010 10:55 PM EST up reply actions

Its great that the UFC is picking up all these classic Japanese guys but IMHO — it always seems to be in the twilight of their careers. Maybe I am being a little negative, I should just be excited to see Kid in the octagon.

Kid wanted to go to the Olympics

Which is one of the reasons that this didn’t happen sooner. There’s usually more to it than the UFC getting them when they’re past their primes. Contracts, personal issues, etc. etc.

I understand there are usually other issues but ultimately the UFC gets these guys too late in their careers. Happens time and time again — Gomi, Chonan, Cro Cop, Filho, Gono, Herring, Mishima, Nakamura, Nogueira, Wand, etc etc.

This is so full of win.

Dream is sinking fast and it looks like the UFC is nabbing up enough talent to try and get a show over in Japan eventually.

While notable, I thought the Omigawa signing was a bigger “win”. Hopefully Kid a can get on a winner streak before he’s matched against Faber in the match everyone wanted to see 3 years ago.

by squaresphere on Dec 10, 2010 10:05 AM EST reply actions

This signing, if it happened, and the Omigawa signing show one of the many positives of the WEC/UFC merger. Who knows who else the UFC is going to sign now.

Hopefully Fernandes & Hioki.

by Steve4192 on Dec 10, 2010 11:57 AM EST up reply actions

Bibi is someone that’ll fit in very well in the UFC, and I would be surprised if he doesn’t sign with them. Hioki, or any of the higher level fighters from DREAM or Sengoku, would be very interesting. It looks like the debate about whether the UFC or Japanese organizations has better Lightweights and below is slowly but surely getting to rest as the merger results in signing more Asian and just lighter weight fighters in general.
