No kidding

My eyes almost popped out of my head when I saw that one. He’s making the right choice moving down, though.

Great fight

Especially after Nam’s showing in the fight tonight. Robbery via overscoring takedowns that do no damage.

I disagree

I felt that Johnson may have won the third without, so the takedowns were icing. Plus, have you ever seen so many elbows to the back of the head? He was getting warned at first, then it just stopped. I was weirded out by that.

Not to sound jaded, but if you just lay in a dudes guard, you deserve to get elbows to the dome.

Great fight though…Nam and Michael both showed a ton of heart.

I can’t tell if it was on the back of the head, that area confuses me to no end, but they were pretty equal on the feet in the third, I would even give the edge to Johnson. So this plus the takedowns make for a logical deserved win.
Kos was full of shit, “takedowns don’t score” my ass, he was screaming takedown like crazy at the end of the fight, and was pissy about it in the rest room.

Dunno what they see in Sako.

Think Phan loses to Garcia, he just doesn’t do enough (read: anything) in his fights to win a decision and he doesn’t have enough power to get a KO. Mexican Windmill by decision.

Was not impressed with Sako at all

I expect Watson to take that handily, and for McKenzie to sub British. Still a bit shocked at Garcia/Phan, so I’m not sure who to pick— but the card got a lot better with that addition.

McKenzie over Wilkinson?

Wilkinson isn’t going to shoot for a takedown though, and McKenzie has literally nothing besides that guillotine.

Right

You figured it out.

Just curious as to your reasoning for picking McKenzie is all.

A lot of people seem to see something in him that I don’t and I’m trying to figure out what it is.

by lowellthehammer on Dec 2, 2010 12:29 AM EST up reply actions

I can see why you wouldn't agree

I think he’s very tenacious, obviously has good subs (don’t be fooled because you’ve only seen the one that never fails), is very long for his division, and is young with a lot of upside.

I think his demeanor, more than anything, deters people from him. But I have reason to believe he’s been working on his striking some and Wilkinson doesn’t seem to have the best tank (along with being average at everything).

I tend to agree with everything you said.

But I disagree on Wilkinson’s gas being a factor here – in fact, I’d say Cody’s cardio is much more questionable considering his showing against Phan.

Still, in fights with guys of this caliber it’s usually smart to favor the one that’s displayed some finishing ability so a McKenzie sub is probably a smart pick. I’ll probably feel like an idiot when Wilkinson gets tapped in the first.

We'll see

I think Wilkinson could be good in the future. Just not now and not in the UFC.

Interestingly enough

I said that same thing about McKenzie probably two episodes back.

When a ball goes into a net, it only means something because we decide it means something. When somebody punches somebody in the face it always means something.

by lowellthehammer on Dec 2, 2010 12:54 AM EST up reply actions

Cody won’t have the same problem if he’s not trying to wrestle, and Wilkinson is not going to try to wrestle with him.

Cody’s style is interesting because trying to wrestle him puts you into his guilllotine, but he does have a temptingly weak gas tank which could be exploited if you could get him into a grappling match without first running into that deadly guillotine. That’s why I think George St. Pierre did him wrong by expecting him to become a wrestler.

The trick is that if he wants to have a future he needs to develop much stronger standup. But he’s 22, if he wants to, he has a bright future IMHO.

I actually was surprised to find out people didn’t like McKenzie’s demeanor, I thought him and Brookins were so fun and chill on the show.

by lowellthehammer on Dec 2, 2010 12:17 AM EST up reply actions

He didn't pull out of anything.

The injury was likely a cover story to avoid TUF spoilers about Nam. They just decided to have Garcia fight Nam instead of Toner.

by Scott Haber on Dec 2, 2010 12:11 AM EST up reply actions

He absolutely pulled out. He may not have signed, but he was the first to agree with the fight against Toner.

by BJJDenver on Dec 2, 2010 12:41 PM EST up reply actions

That's not what I meant.

I realize that the Garcia-Toner fight was agreed to, but Garcia didn’t voluntarily “pull out” of the fight afterwards because of any injury, or even because he wanted the fight with Nam.

The UFC/Joe Silva “pulled him out” of that matchup and replaced him with Loveland…it wasn’t in Leonard’s hands.

The moment they did a dedicated lightweights seasons of TUF, I knew they were going to merge the WEC with UFC.

by Pyrgz Krum on Dec 2, 2010 1:20 AM EST up reply actions

Exactly

They have a ton of LW’s now and this will give some mainstream name recognition to the 145 division when the TUF fighters drop down. It’ll make it easy to market to the casual fan.

by seanerk88 on Dec 2, 2010 1:22 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

Despite the ill will towards Garcia for winning fights that he probably should not have won, this is still a tough fight for anyone’s first UFC fight. Nonetheless, I do like Phan vs Garcia, and I am glad to see it on the main card. I expect that fight to be a standup war, and I am hoping to see those liver punches from Nam.

This is a very solid card.

Nam will look good in the beginnig against Garcia but wont be able to hang. And wheres Bruce Lee Roy? I thought Dana “really like that kid”.

by younghispanic on Dec 2, 2010 3:26 AM EST reply actions

Johnson won’t be in the UFC for long.
Most of the Tuf 12ers were FWs, i expect them all to drop to FW.
Brookins may win 1 or 2 depending on the matchmaking.

In the end it just shows you how weak TUF casts are nowadays.

by KOQ24 on Dec 2, 2010 4:05 AM EST reply actions

i was just saying pretty recently

look how successful the tuf 10 cast has been that we all shit on, a 12-2 record between madsen, mitrione, nelson, and schaub in the ufc with one of the losses coming from nelson beating scaub

tuf 11s cast seems to suck something awful but heavyweights actually gave the ufc some competitive fresh blood for the division

by milk72 on Dec 2, 2010 7:38 AM EST up reply actions

That might have more to do with the division than the fighters. The Heavyweight division is paper thin.

by RS26 on Dec 2, 2010 8:10 AM EST up reply actions

I disagree.

I think Nam will fare well as a mid level fighter in the 145lb division. Brookins is very good. Give the guy some time and he’ll develop into something special. Johnson is equally as gifted athletically but lacks cardio and has a few other holes in his game, if he gets his cardio under control and winds up in a good camp he could surprise a few people too. Every season of TUF has produced at least one fighter to do great things.

TUF1 : Deigo Sanchez, Kenny Florian, and Josh Koscheck have all fought for a belt. Forrest Griffin actually held one for a few months.
TUF 2: Rashad Evans. Nuff said. Joe Stevenson also fought for the LW belt.
TUF 3: Bisping, has headlined multiple card. 20-3 record
TUF 4: Serra damn near killed GSP
TUF 5: Maynard challenges for the LW belt in January.
TUF 6: George Sortiropoulos! Seriously this guy is a fight away from #1 contender
TUF 7: ok….you win this round.
TUF 8: Bader…See George Sortiropoulos
TUF 9: see TUF 7
TUF 10: See the guys post above me about the Heavyweights.
TUF 11: Too early to tell

by Spider_Vemon on Dec 2, 2010 8:37 AM EST up reply actions   1 recs

TUF casts have changed though.
Back in 2005/2006 TUF was the best chance to get into the UFC.

Guys like Griffin,Sanchez,Leben,Swick,Stevenson,Bisping were alreadywell developed and faced quality opposition outside of the UFC.

While Seasons 1-5 produced 4-8 long time UFC fighters, Seasons 6-10 have had 2-4 with less Title contender material.

Season 8 winner was just cut and the Season 6 winner will probably follow soon

by KOQ24 on Dec 2, 2010 9:13 AM EST up reply actions

Yeah I agree with that. My statement though was that every tuf season produces a few gems. Brookins and/or Johnson has the potential to be this years gem(s)

by Spider_Vemon on Dec 2, 2010 9:35 AM EST up reply actions

I agree with both of you to an extent. Yes, we have had stars come out of TUF and yes, the more recent seasons seem to be headed for disappointment. However, not only is TUF a shortcut to the UFC, it is a shortcut to better camps and coaching. I have to think that some of these guys that we may take lightly now, will get into better camps and improve beyond what they could have without TUF.

by BJJDenver on Dec 2, 2010 12:45 PM EST up reply actions

I like how matter of fact you were at the end

Pretty much every person on TUF is fighting above their weight due to the format. Cutting weight every few months versus every few days is a vastly thing.

Hope Brookins has something for Johnsons wrestling/power. Because the sparring session they showed between the two at the end of last nights episode was a bunch of Johnson tossing Brookins around and driving him into the cage. It should be a good fight and I think Brookins will win it but watching Johnson toss him around like that got me really excited that this could be a good fight.

by Spider_Vemon on Dec 2, 2010 9:04 AM EST up reply actions

You get his cardio up

and he can be a more annoying version of Clay Guida.

Maybe I’m just saying that because of their hair, or just their scrappy attitude on the ground.

by djfivenine on Dec 2, 2010 11:29 AM EST up reply actions

The guy has already fought Jose Aldo (and even lateral dropped him), so that shows me that he has already fought high level competition early in his MMA career. He’s also fought guys like Jabouin, and he has fought in both the WEC and Bellator. Brookins is still young, but he has already fought some good level of competition and has fought in some of the higher-end secondary MMA organizations.
