This shit is the reason Roger got bumped off the card (first to prelims, then completely)?
Say what you want about the Herschel Walker experiment, but when it comes at the cost of watching the greatest jiu jitsu practitioner in the world, I have a serious issue with it.

The fight got moved to January [vs. Mike Kyle]
http://www.graciemag.com/en/2010/10/strikeforce-postpones-roger-vs-mike-kyle-till-january/
I know, but it's bullshit
Roger seems upset that he had his camp prepared to peek at a certain point and had to readjust everything. Initially, he was bumped to the untelevised undercard, presumably because Walker is fighting a guy with a walker.
"I'm gonna go after number one, whoever it is. If it's Anderson, or I gotta go up after the guys at 205, or go on a diet and go after Jose Aldo-- it doesn't matter." -Chael Sonnen
Bullshit.
Walker has been on this card from the beginning.
And then God created Saturn... and he liked it, so he put a ring on it.
Twitter me and what not.
What the fuck does that have to do with anything?

Walker has been on this card ever since it was first announced. To say Roger got bumped for this fight is incorrect. Besides Roger looked like he belonged on a Challengers card in his last fight. In MMA the Gracies are all legend and no performance these days.
But Herschel Walker is elite level MMA?
I know why he’s on the card but saying Roger belongs on a Challengers card while Walker gets co-main billing is laughable.

If this event gets mentioned on ESPN
It will be because of Herschel Walker. Having Roger Gracie on the card would get a handful of internet fans excited and nothing more. It’s a neutral move having him on Challengers, since I don’t even think Gracie will develop into a competent mid-level fighter. And if you wanna bitch, Bigfoot shouldn’t be fighting a guy who hasn’t had a meaningful fight since the potato crop went bad.

Have a better target if you want to sling shit
Herschel has been scheduled for the card since September 22.
Gracie’s fight was announced October 7.

Dude, wut?
I’m not saying he was on and than off. I’m saying he’s not on the main card on account of a fight like this. You people are easily confused.
"I'm gonna go after number one, whoever it is. If it's Anderson, or I gotta go up after the guys at 205, or go on a diet and go after Jose Aldo-- it doesn't matter." -Chael Sonnen
This guy's wins come against opponents with a combined record of 1-8
And the one guy that KO’d him is 5-0.
Can’t wait for this!!!!!!!!1

..only to come back 9 years later to get KO’ed? AWESOME FIGHT!

Ultimate Can
This guy hasn’t won a fight in 9 years and his 4 wins are over opponents with a total career record of 1-8. I understand getting him a reasonable fight, but this is ridiculous. The UFC brings in some fighters that don’t belong, but it is ridiculous to bring in fighters of this caliber to fight on the main card of one of the biggest events of the year.
So you want to be a f*ckin' can?!?!

Only if I get to
fight Gary Goodridge and Ken Shamrock.
Sounds like a terrible fight
Good job, Strikeforce.
I know the business aspect of this crap, but it just seems that SF is sacrificing long term success for immediate mediocrity.
Absolutely zero interest in this fight, but of course, I’m probably not the viewer they are going after.
I think I will counter program this with “The Last Dragon”.

The real problem is
The viewer they’re after isn’t likely to return to see the real talent Strikeforce has to offer.

I think I will counter program this with "The Last Dragon".
The least Strikeforce could do is set up Walker versus Julius Carry or Taimak. That is something I would watch.
I did not know that. What a bummer.
As good as he was in Last Dragon, I will always remember him as Lord Bowler from The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr. He and Bruce Campbell made an awesome duo in that series.
Didn’t know he had passed either, and that’s actually what I remember him most for just because of their chemistry in it.

Anything to grab eyeballs right?
People talk about Walker helping bring some mainstream exposure to the sport but is this really putting the best foot forward?

Agreed.
The Walker fights (and to a lesser extent, Lashley fights) are the equivalent of ‘celebrity boxing’. The problem with using celebrities to draw attention to your event is that a lot of the people who tune in view every fight on the card through the same lens as the celebrity fight. They don’t take the event seriously as a legit athletic endeavor and assume everyone on the card is a rank amateur, same as Walker.

We have to look at it from Strikeforce's point of view
Carson is a 11 year veteran
He is 4-1
He is a former WEC fighter
He has finished at least 3 of his 4 wins with all 3 ending in the first round.
It is all how you spin it.
anything is better then Greg "Nudge" Nagy
by Body Triangle on Nov 6, 2010 10:44 AM EDT up reply actions
You know how Strikeforce is spinning it?
They’re telling hardcore fans to sit on it and spin.
They’re sacrificing anything resembling a credible fight in a maincard spot to get a cheap ratings boost that in all likelihood won’t generate any return viewers.

1 fight that we know of. It’s been pointed out in other threads, but records from fighters in the states aren’t perfect let alone the records for those fighting elsewhere. Could be that he has 1 fight, could be that he is 10+ and we just don’t know.
Either way it’s just a pay check, but Trigg has done enough in the sport and for the sport that it’s forgivable.

They’re not exactly building Herschel Walker to be a star in the heavyweight division. Sure, it’s not a fight most people want to see, but complaining about him fighting a can is kind of ridiculous. He’s been training for less than a year, this is his second professional fight and the man’s 48. It’s not like they’re trying to fluff his record so they can feel justified in matching him up with a top level talent like they were trying to do with Bobby Lashley; it’s Herschel Walker.
Luke Thomas was saying back at the begging of the week that the only person who lights the phones up more than Hershel is Brock. I personally have no need to see Hershel but if it will pull in viewers in large numbers I’ll suffer through it occasionally. I just don’t think they are going to get any where near the bump this time they did last time. The first time it was a curiosity. People know what to expect this time.
I don't get why people are so upset about this, lol.
Walker has had one fight. Other dude legitimately wants to fight a couple more times.
And then God created Saturn... and he liked it, so he put a ring on it.

Who did you guys expect him to fight? This is his 2nd pro fight. Jesus, everyone is shitting all over Strikeforce for trying to garner ratings, yet James Toney co-headlined a UFC pay-per-view. Which is worse?

I would say this is obviously worse
Toney was an experienced combat fighter at least and was going up against a Hall of Famer in the sport, the fight was garbage but still better than this.
"I'm not interested in touching dicks bro." -Luke Thomas
I respect your opinion, but I completely disagree. The Toney vs Couture fight was ridiculous, and was ludicrously one-sided. Herschel Walker will bring viewers to Strikeforce, and they could certainly use the ratings boost. The Couture vs Toney fight was a joke, yet it was deemed worthy to co-headline a pay-per-view that I paid $54.95 for.

Well yes
in terms of entertainment value the fight was monkey ass, but it terms of promotional push it was a far more legitimate contest than old Football player vs anonymous scrub.

who sez?
if by promotional push you mean ‘carny turn’ then fine but i seem to recall a lot of people feeling like they had been a little bit fooled by the old box v mma slant. Most said afterwards that it was a foregone conclusion – hence not really much of a fight.
Walkers fight is exactly what it sez on the tin…
'if you don't have humility as a fighter, fighting will bring humility to you...'
I can’t wait until Dave Bautista signs with Strikeforce and headlines a Strikeforce card and gets paid more (that won’t go to Charity for sure) than 3/4 of the Strikeforce Roster only to watch him get smashed by Chad Griggs or Bobby Lashley.
Once this happens people will stop thinking/hating on the Herschel Walker ordeal.
I’ve been really impressed by Walker’s spirit and humility (from what I have seen) and his desire to lift mma by his participation – which is also driven by his love for the sport.
Setting this man a realistic challenge seems only appropriate.
If people demand nothing but fights they consider relevant to titles and contender development – then they should be prepared to lose a light of the most interesting, entertaining and flamboyant fighters. We all want to see good fights and maybe Mr. Walker’s fight will be one of those, but either way I’m more than happy to see him fight Scott Carson on Dec 4th.
Roll on.

I don't think people understand
If you follow the sporting world at large, Herschel Walker is essentially the face of Strikeforce. Complain about that if you want, but it sure as hell wasn’t going to be Scott Coker or Fedor or Nick Diaz, and we’re all thankful it isn’t Frank Shamrock.
The only kind of presence this card is going to get in the sporting press is because of Walker. Will it be sustained over the long haul? I don’t know, if I had to guess I’d say probably not. But are you seriously telling me it’s better for them to be completely off the radar for this sick card just so your “tastes” as an “MMA hardcore” are not affronted?

Right on
You are apparently over 25, and actually realize that this is a biz first and last.
MMA “hardcores” are gonna watch this anyway; they’re not the ones SF is trying to hook, and yeah, Herschel Walker will pull new eyeballs.
My main concern is what they do with those eyeballs after they have them. They need to build the backstory on new fighters, and established ones, to keep those viewers coming back.
I'm 21
But I have the liver of F. Scott Fitzgerald at around age 40, for what that’s worth.
I think they’ve built a great card around the Walker fight. Smith/Daley should be fireworks, and I fully expect Bigfoot to KO Overeem in spectacular fashion.

It's disgusting
I know your Georgia roots will not allow you to detract from anything Herschel does.
This fight takes a slot away from actual fighters trying to make an actual living actually fighting against actual fighters.

But Subo
Ticket sales and PPV pay those wages, and Walker being on the ticket is a big reason why these guys are going to get paid more than fighting at a smoker in Sandstone, Idaho…
The only fighters who are upset about Walker being on the card are the ones who aren’t part of the show.
The only fighters who are upset about Walker being on the card are the ones who aren’t part of the show.
This is partially right, because two fighters are not fighting on this card because Herschel took their spot. If I were a fighter on the card, I’d be pissed too. “I worked my ass off for years, took tough fights injured, clawed my way through the regional scene… only to be upstaged by a 48 year old rookie fighting a hand-selected can.”

Herschel could always get KTFO'd
then next time SF won’t put him on the main card, and their brand will be bashed, once again, for not being the UFC. Win or lose, if you want to bash SF, they’ll give you fodder.
Have you ever noticed that anybody driving slower than you is an idiot, and anyone going faster than you is a maniac?

While your first claim is undeniable, the second part is something on which I (predictably) completely disagree.
Herschel Walker, Fedor, and very few other entities are responsible for guys like Scott Smith and Bigfoot Silva getting on national television, in packed arenas outside Strikeforces California homebase, and thus higher wages and sponsorship dollars.
Herschal Walker being on this card is a net plus for every fighter on this card, and Strikeforce in general.
"We should just concentrate on what we’re good at… Death Metal and interior design." – William Murderface
But that's silly
Strikeforce had Fedor AND a CBS slot well before the Walker experiment. I admire his charitable donations, but he’s not helping Strikeforce, MMA or the other fighters on the roster by participating.

As much as I hate the idea this is a co-main
If Strikeforce doesn’t do this their ratings are sunk.
Michael Robinson leads the Seahawks in completion percentage, yards-per-attempt, and QB rating.
Well
What happens if Herschel Walker goes out there and gets 1000% smashed by No Named Scott Carson? Does this mean Strikeforce will take a semi decent blow with ratings in the future?
They have had Fedor and Bobby Lashley, two fighters highly pushed fighters lose this year. I don’t know what would happen if Herschel would lose. Won’t be good for Strikeforce probably.

Unintelligent Defense, I bring Cricket bats to fist fights.
This is fine probably, but I think everyone would be better served if Walker’s opponent was more of a prospect.
It doesn’t have to be a good prospect, but young guy at the same skill level as Walker would be better than this. Just because this is another example of SF booking a fight where it’s a problem if the wrong guy wins.
If Walker loses to a younger prospect, be becomes the guy that beat Herschel Walker, and then you can come back and do a fight like this or try again if walker wants to.
