I have a feeling Pat Battery might try to
take Joey down and donkey kong him after working with you know who for a few weeks … Nah…. let’s just hope he is not in love with Joey like he was with Crocop.

not a bad card
wow not a bad card 3 of these fights can actually co main event or main event a card
I'm sorry..
but this looks like one of the most one sided fights I’ve ever seen put together. I know Pat isn’t some top 5 heavyweight, but there is no way that I can expect Beltran to outstrike, outgrapple, or even compete with Barry. Specially after watching the Mitrione fight.
But, but
MMAth says Beltran>Hauge>Barry
How is this not right???!!!

he got outgrappled by cro cop, we know cro cops tdd is great but i never thought i see him sub someone

Yeah,
“outgrappled” was a pretty strong word, but what I meant was that in the overall fight, I see no advantages for Beltran. Not that I have ever seen Joey’s ground game, but I’d be willing to bet that he’ll get finished by Barry due to his terrible striking skills before he even has a chance to grapple with Pat.
but there is no way that I can expect Beltran to outstrike, outgrapple, or even compete with Barry.
Then you probably should watch more of Beltran’s and Barry’s fights.

I’ve seen plenty of both and I expect to see Beltran comprehensively worked over. Instead of trying to be a smartass, I’d love to hear an explanation of how it is Beltran wins this fight. Is there anything to indicate that at this level he possesses the one shot power to have a punchers chance? Or that his grappling is at such a level that he can submit or control anyone?

Are you saying that if I went back and watched more of Beltran’s fights, I could find better reason to believe that he would be competitive with Barry?
Yup.
Beltran has serviceable boxing, and Barry, for all his kickboxing skill, has shown to have questionable defense, especially in the Cro Cop fight. Besides, in response to Balboa, I wasn’t aware that one needed to have demonstrated KO power to have a puncher’s chance. Russow never had KO power before the Duffee fight…should he not have been given a “puncher’s chance?” Condit wasn’t KOing guys before the Hardy fight either…should he not have had a "puncher’s chance?’
As far as the ground game, it appears Beltran has some wrestling in his background. He wasn’t afraid to pound on Gracie on the floor (despite Gracie’s awful conditioning) rather than showing fear of the ground game and immediately backing away, and he had some decent sweeps and reversals against Hague. Barry on the ground, is in a word, awful. I don’t expect Beltran to submit or even dominate Barry on the ground, but I think he can sure as hell keep him down and win a couple rounds.
In summary, do I think Beltran is going to win? No. But I think some of you are foolish to see this as a squash match for Barry, when the only real advantage he has is in the kickboxing department.
Barry’s “questionable defense” wasn’t penetrated by a far superior kickboxer to Beltran. What Beltran effectively might be able to offer is pressure, and frankly, he is not a great pressure fighter. Barry hasn’t shown himself to be the easiest man in the world to necessarily take down either and while he fell victim to a sucker’s guillotine shooting in himself, I don’t expect him to take that tact with Barry.
The real advantage Barry has is in Beltran’s primary mode of offense. I’m sorry you don’t see it as cut and paste as others, but not every fight in the UFC is going to be competitive just because they put on 4 Oz gloves and Dana tells you so.

What a snoozefest :P
Stand and bang to the third power.
Edwards/Guillard will be sick. Yves won’t let him run straight backward without getting caught.
Florian/Dunham is the most exciting match up(on paper) in the LW division since Gomi/Griffin (Guillard/Stephenson doesn’t count).
The rest of the card is just as good, just smaller names. They should call it ‘Fight for the troops 2: Who drops first?’
I'll say this now
IF Barry loses this one it’s probably so long HD.
Awesome fight, awesome free card
Dig the hell out of watching these guys fight, that being said…

Can we get more commentary on these pieces?
I always feel that I would appreciate BE more than I already do (best MMA site on the net) if each of these articles had more commentary to them. I know you guys have plenty of writers here with knowledge of all of these fighters. I’m not saying go out of your way or anything, but if you’re got time … :]

It seems like they leave it to the commentators when the fights are announced, then when the fight card approaches we get a million (quality) articles analyzing the fights.

Well i guess the news is out, @hypeordie and i will be throwin down for the troops. jan 22, LOSER LEAVES TOWN!! Time to go big or go home!

Loser gets axed?
Mike Goldberg: "You know Joe, When Matt and his brother Mark Hughes were growing up, they would pound each other behind the barn."
More than likely
Usually when 2 guys that are coming off of losses, Beltran’s being a loss on the prelims, and Barry being 2-2 in the promotion….the loser has a pretty good chance of being cut.
I’m hoping Barry works on his ground game, and his cardio.

Nice.
I’m pretty sure I’ve paid for lesser cards than this.

with this and the mitrione/hague fight on the undercard
we’ll finally get another step closer to see who comes out of the barry/beltran/mitrione/hague round robin for supremacy at the bottom of the ufc heavyweight division

This is a fun fight. Beltran seems to know that a loss here could get him cut, so I wonder if he’ll try to go for more takedowns in this fight. It the fight stays standing though, I expect Barry to win in the standup.

I'd also like to note that this being such a great free card only shows
That the WEC merger does in fact mean that all of the cards, from fight nights, to free numbered events, to PPVs, will all be getting a step up in fight quality.
This is a fantastic free event…I mean, as a whole, this card kicks 122’s ass in my opinion, as far as names I want to see, and relevancy.
CPG
other than dunham/florian
are these fights really more relevant than bisping/akiyama, condit/hardy, browne/kongo and hathaway/pyle?
i’m not saying they aren’t better fights, and some of the prospects at ufc 122 flamed out (hathaway and browne, especially) but the fights were pretty relevant. not sure you can say the same thing aboug guillard, swick and barry, even though they are all entertaining fighters.
I'm talking about 122
122: Marquardt vs Okami
Not 120
I thought 120 was an awesome card…both on paper and how it turned out.

Well, Pat should win this fight but for some reason I think Beltran is going to take the upset.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see Beltran try and get the fight to the ground even if Pat has been training with the Death Clutch guys lately. I’d be even less surprised to see Pat tap out to just about anything if it does.
Pat was brought in to the "Death Clutch" camp
to help Brock with his striking, not to learn the ground game. When a lot of these guest training partners are flown into a camp, they’re there to provide a service, not really to benefit from it.
